By the time Nathan rushed home, the technicians had already surrounded Camille.
"Ivy, what do you think you're doing?"
The usually meticulous Dr. Pierce stood panting in the doorway, with one button on his shirt fastened into the wrong buttonhole.
Camille looked to him for help.
"Don't you hate anything unprofessional?" I folded my arms and regarded him coldly. "I'm disposing of this defective unit."
"No!" His voice rose sharply, cutting me off. "Our son needs her."
"I don't need a piece of equipment with unstable programming taking care of my child."
Every time Camille had deliberately caused trouble or endangered our son, Nathan had blamed her unstable programming.
This time, I refused to accept it.
I gestured for the technicians to step forward. Nathan moved in front of Camille, his entire body tense.
"Mr. Pierce, once we retrieve this unit, customer support will provide you with a brand-new humanoid robot," one of them explained.
"I only want her."
His face darkened. When he looked at me through his glasses, his voice carried a hardness I had never heard before.
Pressing my lips together, I clenched my hands and strode forward to grab Camille.
Nathan grabbed my shoulder and shoved me away.
The force of the shove sent me crashing to the floor.
My forehead struck the corner of the table, and blood seeped from the wound as a dull pain spread through my body.
I stared at Nathan in disbelief.
He stood frozen, a flash of guilt crossing his eyes. After a long moment, he said, "Why are you fighting with a robot?"
I covered the cut and forced myself to my feet. The absurdity of the situation almost made me laugh.
"Choose between us."
He frowned, his lips compressing into a straight line.
His silence was answer enough.
I placed the divorce agreement I had already signed on the table and held out a pen.
"Sign it."
My voice was quiet, as though I were discussing something that didn't matter.
He stared at me, shock widening his eyes. "Ivy..."
The sight of the pen made him take an involuntary step back.
I set it on the table. "I'm moving out today. Sign the agreement and mail it to me."
His hand closed tightly around my wrist.
Nathan tightened his grip on my wrist. "Don't do this," he said hoarsely. "Don't leave..."
"Nathan, save me!" Camille screamed.
The technicians were advancing on her, and terror flashed across her face.
Whatever Nathan might have said to stop me from leaving died in his throat. His grip on my wrist loosened at once.
"Why is a robot yelling for help?" one technician asked.
"It must be a software bug. We'd better open the unit up and check."
"Get away from me! I'm not a robot!"
Camille retreated into a corner, her eyes red with fear.
Nathan rushed over, shielded her with his body, and patted her back soothingly.
"She isn't a robot. Please leave."
The technicians froze and exchanged bewildered looks.
"Then who is she?"
I stared at Nathan and Camille in each other's arms as the last of my hope faded.
"So who is she? Your housekeeper, a thief, or... your mistress?"
"Ivy!" Nathan cut me off, his expression grim. "Let these strangers leave first. Camille can't be frightened."
Whatever warmth I still felt for him disappeared.
"There's no need."
I pointed calmly to the phone on the table. "Everything that just happened was recorded. We're live."
Both Nathan and Camille went pale.
His lips moved as if he wanted to explain, but I cut him off.
"Sign the agreement as soon as possible. Otherwise, I have a video of the two of you in bed that proves your marital infidelity."
With that, I picked up my son and left.
The live comments raced across the livestream feed.
A: [A mistress moved into the wife's home pretending to be a humanoid robot? This is wild.]
B: [Cheating right under his wife's nose. That's a new level of depravity.]
C: [That scumbag and his home-wrecking mistress deserve each other.]
The scandal dominated the trending topics almost immediately.
I was sitting in a coffee shop when my phone rang.
"Ivy, Camille says online that she and Nathan are a legally married couple. She claims you're the mistress."
My hand jerked, and the spoon struck the cup with a sharp clink.
My throat tightened. "That's impossible..."
"It's true! Nathan posted their marriage certificate online."
