Seth was abruptly woken by the sound of banging on the door, his head throbbing with a sharp ache. Blinking away the haze of sleep, he realized he was in Mabel's room, surrounded by disarray. Confusion clouded his mind as he struggled to recall the events of the previous night, memories slipping through his fingers like grains of sand. Rushing to the door, he was met by a maid asking about breakfast choices for him and Mabel. His surprise turned to concern when he realized Mabel was nowhere to be found. Ignoring the maid's inquiry, Seth searched the room frantically, his anxiety mounting with each passing moment. Heading downstairs, he encountered Mabel's parents returning from their lodge stay as the company festival ended late last night. Mrs. Thompson greeted him warmly, but Seth's puzzled expression prompted her to inquire about Mabel's whereabouts. A sense of unease settled over the room as they realized Mabel was missing. Mr. Thompson suggested searching everywhere and questioning the staff. Seth, his head throbbing painfully, struggled to recall the events of the previous night. All he could remember was Mabel mentioning the need for more wine as they both indulged in drinks at the company's festival. Racing outside, Seth noticed one of Mabel's cars was gone. Panic gripped the room as Mabel's mother fretted about her daughter venturing out late at night. With Mabel's phone unreachable, Seth reassured her parents, hastily grabbing his car keys to begin the search. With determination in his heart and worry in his mind, Seth promised to find Mabel and bring her back home safely. * * * Joshua and Jane prepared to depart for their trip to the city, Joshua's stern warning echoed in Jane's ears. He cautioned her to behave herself, urging her to remain calm and not to act impulsively. Aunt Mary bid them farewell, her warm wishes mingling with a touch of concern as she wished Joshua luck with his job in the city. Despite the gravity of the moment, Jane couldn't contain her excitement at the prospect of leaving the small town she had always known. With a skip in her step, she eagerly grabbed Joshua's bag, ready to embark on their journey. As they bid their farewells to Aunt Mary. Seth drove along the desolate highway, his mind raced with worry for Mabel, his heart heavy with the weight of uncertainty. With no close friends nearby, his search seemed futile, until a small gathering caught his eye. Initially disinterested, his attention was suddenly seized by the sight of Mabel's car, broken and burnt from a brutal accident. Hurriedly, he wove through the crowd, his pulse quickening with dread. Tears welled in his eyes as he reached the wreckage, his worst fears confirmed in the twisted metal and burnt remains leaving Mabel's body unrecognizable. His soul felt hollow as he stared at the scene before him, unable to comprehend the magnitude of his loss. The sight of the burnt body, once vibrant and full of life, now unrecognizable in its cruel fate, pierced Seth's heart like a dagger. He stood frozen, consumed by grief, feeling as though the ground had been ripped from beneath his feet. Lost in a sea of sorrow, he struggled to find meaning in the senseless tragedy that had befallen his beloved Mabel. Feeling utterly lost and shattered, Seth struggled to come to terms with the devastating reality of Mabel's demise. The thought of facing her parents, of breaking the news that would shatter their world, was a weight too heavy to bear. Unable to confront his grief head-on, Seth retreated into the solitude of his car, tears streaming down his face as he drowned in sorrow. The incessant ringing of his phone, a cruel reminder of the world outside his pain, went unanswered as he grappled with the enormity of his loss. Driven by a desperate need to escape the suffocating grip of his anguish, Seth aimlessly drove to a place unknown, seeking solace in the anonymity of unfamiliar surroundings. It was there, in the depths of his despair, that a glimmer of hope pierced through the darkness. As he sat in his car, consumed by sorrow, a figure approached, a haunting resemblance to his beloved Mabel. In a moment of desperate longing, Seth's heart leaped with the possibility that his fiancรฉe had somehow returned to him from beyond the grave. Rushing out of his car, Seth reached out to the young woman, his arms enveloping her in a tight embrace, his soul crying out in gratitude for her safety Confusion and disbelief clouded Jane's expression as she processed the sudden, fervent embrace from a stranger. Meanwhile, Joshua, her brother, watched with a mixture of concern and suspicion, unsure of the intentions behind Seth's desperate display. But as reality began to seep back into his consciousness, Seth's hopeful illusion was shattered by the stern grip of Joshua's hand on his arm. Seth's expression darkened with confusion as he regarded Joshua, an unfamiliar figure who had appeared seemingly out of nowhere. With a decisive motion, he broke free from Joshua's grasp and turned his attention back to the woman before him. "Mabel, do you recognize me?" Seth's voice wavered with a mix of hope and anxiety. "Where have you been? I've been so worried about you." His hand reached out tentatively, seeking reassurance in the familiar touch of her skin. But as he searched her eyes for a flicker of recognition, all he found was blank astonishment. Jane stood rooted to the spot, her mind reeling with disbelief at the sudden intrusion into her reality. Seth's impassioned pleas and the uncanny resemblance he bore to someone she had never met left her feeling as though she had stumbled onto the set of a surreal play. Caught off guard by Seth's intensity, Jane found herself momentarily spellbound by his presence, drawn in by his striking attracting features and compelling demeanor. But before she could gather her thoughts, Joshua intervened, his frustration boiling over into anger as he confronted Seth. In a swift and forceful motion, Joshua seized Seth by the collar, demanding an explanation for his strange behavior. Seth, unfazed by Joshua's aggression, shook him off and turned back to Jane, his heart pounding with uncertainty. But as Jane's voice broke through the chaos, Seth felt the ground shift beneath him. Reality crashed down upon him like a tidal wave, dispelling the illusion he had desperately clung to. With a dawning sense of realization, Seth took a step back, his mind racing as he grappled with the truth. The woman before him may have borne a striking resemblance to Mabel, but she was not her. And with that understanding came the crushing weight of disappointment and loss. With a heavy sigh, Seth met Jane's gaze, his voice tinged with resignation. "I'm sorry," he murmured, his eyes filled with remorse. "I mistook you for someone else. Please forgive me." Seth stood by his car, his gaze lingering on Jane and Joshua as they walked away. His thoughts were interrupted by the shrill ring of his phone. It was Mabel's mother, Mrs. Thompson, her voice trembling with worry. "Where have you been? We've been trying to reach you!" she exclaimed, her concern palpable even through the phone. "How is Mabel? Have you seen her?" Seth's mind raced as he searched for the right words to ease Mrs. Thompson's anxiety. "Don't be worried, ma," he replied, his voice calm and reassuring. "I've seen Mabel." But as he spoke those words, a wave of realization washed over him. He turned back to watch Jane and Joshua disappear around the corner. His heart sank as he realized the truth he had been avoiding. Mabel is dead. The events of the past few hours flooded back to himโ€” the desperate search for Mabel, the sorrows and the hope he felt on seeing Jane. Seth's mind raced as he tried to piece together the events leading up to this moment. He remembered the striking resemblance between Jane and Mabel. And now, with Mabel nowhere to be found, Seth couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to thier resemblance that met the eye. With a sense of determination, Seth pocketed his phone and headed towards his car.
