Mission

1004 Words
A military patrol vehicle speeds down the road. Seeing the military vehicle approaching, the other cars quickly move aside, clearing a path for it. Ryan, sitting in the passenger seat, lowers his head and continues looking through the documents in his hands. On the first page is a photograph of a young woman. She has long white hair, fair skin, and a pair of eyes as clear and blue as a tranquil lake. She is so beautiful that she almost looks like an elf. Ryan frowns and says, “Captain, does this Guide Mia really have what it takes to treat Leon? Leon is already an S-rank Sentinel before he loses control. After losing control, his mental power is probably even stronger. According to the information,Mia’s mental power is only A-rank. I’m afraid an A-rank Guide can’t even break through Leon’s mental barrier.” Eric keeps one hand firmly on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. He says expressionlessly, “Her mental power is indeed only A-rank,but she ranks first in performance at the Mental Treatment Center for several consecutive years. She is particularly skilled in mental guidance and restoration.” Ryan still looks uneasy. He closes the file and asks, “Then why don’t we find an S-rank Guide?” Eric is silent for a moment before answering, “We already try. It doesn’t work. An S-rank Guide can forcibly break through Leon’s mental barrier, but the price is destroying his entire mental landscape. Our goal is to awaken Leon from his state of losing control, not destroy him.” Ryan looks troubled. “If even an S-rank Guide can’t do it,wouldn’t finding an A-rank Guide be even worse?” Eric thinks for a moment before saying, “Actually, being ranked first at the Mental Treatment Center isn’t enough by itself to make the Colonel choose Mia. There’s another, more important reason—Mia is once an S-rank Guide.” Ryan freezes, clearly surprised. “She is once an S-rank Guide? What does that mean? Isn’t a person’s mental power already determined when it’s first measured at sixteen?” “That’s true,” Eric says, lowering his voice, “but Mia is an exception. According to what I hear from the Colonel, she becomes an A-rank Guide because of an accident.” Ryan immediately becomes curious. “What kind of accident?” Eric glances at the traffic ahead before answering, “I ask the Colonel the same thing back then, but he says it’s classified.” He pauses before adding, “Anyway,we’re almost at the White Tower. Get ready to get out.” Ryan wisely falls silent and looks ahead. A tall white building gradually comes into view. The exterior walls of the building are covered in a special white metal, primarily designed to block mental-power detection from the outside. From a distance, the entire structure looks like a white stone monument thrust into the sky. The White Tower isn’t actually a tower in the traditional sense. It is a comprehensive facility that combines Guide administration, training, mental treatment, and other functions. Eric parks the vehicle and leads Ryan into the White Tower. There is a security gate at the entrance. Eric scans his identification card, and the gate gives a soft beep before allowing the two of them through. The moment they enter the White Tower,Ryan’s attention is drawn to the garden in the center. The garden is lush with vegetation, and all kinds of rare flowers are in full bloom, filling the air with a faint floral fragrance. An orange cat is lazily lying on the grass. Hearing the commotion,it opens its eyes and gives Eric and Ryan a lazy glance. Seeing that the two men don’t seem dangerous,it closes its eyes again and continues basking in the sun. Ryan looks around carefully. He notices an owl perched in a tree, several rabbits hiding in the bushes, and a sika deer standing beside the pond. Compared with ordinary animals, these creatures seem to have more intelligent, almost human-like eyes. Could they all be mental entities? Eric notices the astonished look on Ryan’s face and smiles. “What? Is this your first time at the White Tower?” Ryan nods. “Yes. Sentinels who come here either come to find a suitable Guide as a partner or receive mental guidance. I have neither reason to be here,so naturally,I’ve never been to the White Tower.” Eric pats Ryan on the shoulder. “Don’t worry. With your potential as an A-rank Sentinel,I’m sure you’ll find a suitable partner soon. Come on. Let’s head upstairs.” The two of them take the elevator and soon arrive at the seventh floor. The seventh floor is the Mental Guidance Center. Every Guide with a medical license has an independent treatment room. Several chairs are placed outside each room for patients waiting for their appointments. Eric walks to the door of Mia’s treatment room and glances at the time on his wristband. There are still a few minutes before their appointment. He is just about to sit down and wait when the door to the treatment room opens. A Sentinel more than two meters tall and built like a bear is standing in front of a tall, slender Guide wearing a white lab coat. He hunches his body, doing his best to make himself look as harmless as possible, and speaks with heartfelt sincerity. “Thank you so much,Dr. Mia. My mental trauma torments me for such a long time. Every day is unbearable. I already give up hope. Then, thanks to a friend who recommends you,I come to see you. I never think you can actually heal my mental trauma. I really can’t thank you enough.” Mia smiles. “You’re welcome. It’s my responsibility. When you go home, make sure you get plenty of rest, and try not to let your emotions fluctuate too much.” The Sentinel thanks her a few more times before finally leaving. After seeing her patient off,Mia turns around and looks at Eric and Ryan standing by the door. Noticing the military uniforms they are wearing, she pauses slightly before asking, “Are you two here to see me? Come in.”
