As soon as they enter, Eric quickly scans the office.
The office is furnished very simply. There is only a desk and a consultation chair in front of it. The most eye-catching feature is the bookshelf that occupies an entire wall, packed tightly with books. The air carries a faint scent of cedar.
“Please, have a seat.”
Mia gestures toward the chair.
Eric sits down in the consultation chair, while Ryan remains standing behind him.
Mia folds her hands on the desk and asks, “May I ask what brings you here?”
Eric sits upright, takes an identification card from his pocket, and holds it out to Mia.
Mia takes it and lowers her head to examine it carefully.
While Mia checks the identification card, Eric introduces himself.
“My name is Eric. I’m a Captain in the First Military District. The man standing behind me is my subordinate, Ryan. We’re here because we need to save someone.”
Mia looks up, puzzled. “Who?”
“His name is Leon. He’s an S-rank Sentinel and the captain of the North Wind Squad.”
Eric pauses before continuing.
“A month ago, he leads his squad on a classified mission. Something goes wrong during the mission. In order to ensure that the other members of his squad can escape safely, he overuses his mental power, which ultimately causes his mental world to collapse.”
Eric looks at Mia.
“Do you think there’s any way you can treat him?”
Mia frowns but does not refuse immediately. Instead, she asks, “What treatments have you tried so far?”
Eric turns to Ryan and gives him a look, signaling him to hand the documents over to Mia.
Mia takes the documents and begins flipping through them.
A few minutes later, she finishes reading the entire file and looks up.
“I’ve read through the information. One of the treatment methods involves an S-rank Guide performing mental guidance on him, but it is unsuccessful.”
She pauses before continuing.
“I’m only an A-rank Guide. I’m curious. If even an S-rank Guide fails, why do you come to me?”
Eric meets Mia’s eyes.
“Professionally, every S-rank Sentinel is extremely rare and valuable. They play a vital role in maintaining security and eliminating Contaminants.”
He pauses, his voice becoming heavier.
“Personally, Leon is my brother. He ends up like this because he is protecting his team.”
Eric’s gaze darkens.
“I know him. He would rather die on the battlefield than continue living like this—neither human nor monster.”
He looks directly at Mia.
“Dr. Mia, you are the best therapist at the Mental Treatment Center. If even you aren’t willing to try, then who else could possibly save him?”
After hearing this, Mia nods lightly.
“I understand. I’m willing to do everything I can to treat this captain.”
She pauses before adding,
“But I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to cure him. After all, there is still an almost insurmountable gap between A-rank and S-rank.”
At that moment, Ryan can’t help but interrupt.
“I hear from the Captain that you used to be an S-rank Guide. Is that true?”
At those words, Mia’s body stiffens slightly.
A scene suddenly flashes through her mind.
Her father holds her down with one hand, pinning her firmly against the floor so she can’t move. In his other hand is a large syringe, which he brutally drives into her spine and uses to draw the cerebrospinal fluid from it.
As he extracts the fluid, her father says,
“Mia, you’re a good girl. You have such a wonderful gift. Why don’t you share a little of that gift with your brother?”
Afterward, Mia’s rank falls from S to A.
Even after her brother is injected with her cerebrospinal fluid, his Guide rank remains unchanged.
If the injection doesn’t ultimately produce any effect, Mia’s rank may continue to decline.
“So, Dr. Mia, you still have a chance of curing Leon, right?”
Ryan’s voice pulls Mia back from her memories.
Mia does not answer the question directly. Instead, she says,
“That is a long time ago. I’m only an A-rank Guide now.”
She looks at Ryan, her voice remaining calm.
“I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to cure him, but I’ll do everything I can.”
Seeing that they have discussed everything they need to, Eric stands up and prepares to leave.
Before reaching the door, he turns back to Mia.
“Information about Leon’s injuries is currently classified. Only a small number of people know about it. So, Dr. Mia, please keep this strictly confidential.”
He pauses.
“I’ll come here to pick you up tomorrow morning.”
Mia nods and stands up as well, preparing to see them out.
Eric reaches the office door and looks back.
“Dr. Mia, then I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Mia smiles.
“See you tomorrow.”
