Leah
For a moment, the entire boardroom was silent.
Every pair of eyes in the room moved between Ethan and me, trying to understand what they had just heard.
“Leah… Hayes?” one of the board members repeated slowly.
The name still felt unfamiliar even to me.
Across the table, Lucas was staring at me like he had just seen a ghost.
Rebecca, however, was the first to react.
“This is ridiculous,” she snapped, pushing her chair back slightly. “Ethan, what kind of joke is this?”
Ethan didn’t even look at her.
Instead, he calmly took a seat at the head of the table.
“It’s not a joke,” he said evenly.
Rebecca laughed sharply.
“Oh really? Because the last time I checked, she was my brother’s useless wife.”
Her words echoed through the room.
A few of the executives shifted uncomfortably in their seats.
Lucas still hadn’t spoken.
His dark eyes remained fixed on me, studying my face like he was trying to figure something out.
Ethan finally looked at Rebecca.
“Mrs. Miller,” he said calmly, “I suggest you choose your words carefully.”
Rebecca scoffed.
“Why? Because she suddenly showed up here wearing a new last name?”
Ethan gestured toward Attorney Carter, who had just entered the room carrying a folder.
“Mr. Carter,” Ethan said, “please explain.”
The lawyer walked forward and placed several documents on the table.
“These are official records from the late Mr. Andrew Hayes,” he said.
The room grew quiet again.
“As stated in his will, Miss Leah McGraw—now Leah Hayes—is his biological daughter and a legal heir to Hayes Conglomerate.”
Whispers immediately spread around the table.
Lucas’s expression slowly changed.
First confusion.
Then disbelief.
Then something darker.
Rebecca hit her hand on the table.
“That’s impossible!”
Attorney Carter calmly brought another document toward the center of the table.
“Her birth certificate.”
Rebecca grabbed it quickly.
Her face turned pale as she read it.
Lucas leaned forward and looked at it too.
For the first time that evening… I saw him lose control of his expression.
His eyes slowly lifted to meet mine.
“You knew about this?” he asked quietly.
The question surprised me.
I shook my head.
“I found out today.”
Rebecca threw the paper back onto the table.
“This has to be fake,” she said sharply. “She’s lying. She probably planned this whole thing just to get closer to the Hayes family.”
Ethan’s patience seemed to run out.
“Enough.”
His voice was calm, but firm enough to silence the room.
“The documents have already been verified by three legal teams,” he continued.
He looked directly at the board members.
“As of today, Leah Hayes owns twenty percent of Hayes Conglomerate.”
More whispers filled the room.
Twenty percent wasn’t just a number.
It meant power.
Real power.
Lucas leaned back slowly in his chair, his eyes still locked on me.
Then he spoke again.
“Twenty percent?”
Attorney Carter nodded.
“Yes.”
Rebecca suddenly laughed again.
“Even if that’s true, it doesn’t change anything,” she said dismissively.
“This is a board meeting, not a charity event.”
Her eyes moved toward me with open mockery.
“What exactly does she know about running a company?”
For a moment, the old Leah might have stayed silent.
But tonight was different.
I slowly stepped forward.
The room fell quiet again.
“I know enough,” I said calmly.
Rebecca rolled her eyes.
“Oh please.”
I ignored her and looked at the board members instead.
“For the past three years,” I continued, “I’ve been working behind the scenes at Miller Industries.”
Lucas’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Rebecca laughed again.
“You?”
“Yes,” I replied simply.
I turned toward Lucas.
“You remember the financial crisis two years ago?”
His expression shifted slightly.
“That wasn’t public information,” he said carefully.
“No,” I said.
“It wasn’t.”
Silence filled the room.
“Someone quietly reorganized your international investments before the damage could reach the media,” I continued.
Lucas was staring at me now.
“Someone also stopped the issue with Easton Group that would have cost you billions.”
The room grew even quieter.
Rebecca’s smile slowly disappeared.
Lucas leaned forward slightly.
“You’re saying… that was you?”
I met his gaze.
“Yes.”
The truth was finally in the room.
For three years, I had worked silently to protect his company.
And he had never even known.
Rebecca shook her head angrily.
“This is ridiculous.”
But several board members were now looking at me with interest instead of doubt.
Ethan crossed his arms slightly.
“As you can see,” he said calmly, “Leah Hayes is more than capable of sitting at this table.”
Lucas still hadn’t looked away from me.
For the first time since our marriage began…
There was something new in his eyes.
Realization.
Rebecca suddenly spoke again, her voice sharp.
“Even if she owns twenty percent of Hayes Conglomerate, she’s still divorced from the Miller family.”
She leaned back in her chair confidently.
“She has no influence over Miller Industries.”
A small silence followed her words.
Then I spoke again.
“That’s not entirely true.”
Rebecca frowned.
“What do you mean?”
I reached into my bag and slowly pulled out another document.
The divorce settlement.
Lucas’s signature was still fresh on the page.
“I also own twenty percent of Miller Industries,” I said quietly.
The room exploded with shocked murmurs.
Lucas’s head snapped toward the document.
Rebecca’s face went completely pale.
“You gave her WHAT?” she shouted at her brother.
Lucas didn’t answer.
He was staring at the paper like he had just realized something terrible.
I held his gaze calmly.
“You insisted I sign the divorce papers this morning,” I said softly.
“But you agreed to my terms.”
Silence filled the boardroom again.
Lucas’s jaw tightened slightly.
For the first time in three years…
The balance of power between us had completely changed.
And judging by the look in his eyes—
Lucas Miller had just realized it too.
