Chapter 5: The Fracture

1272 Words
The tension in the camp had become a living thing, coiled and waiting to strike. Two days had passed since the discovery of the footprints, and no one had slept well. Every rustle in the jungle sent hearts racing. Every shadow seemed to move with purpose. Susan woke before dawn, her body aching from the hard ground. Ez was already awake, sitting by the dying embers of the fire, her face illuminated by the faint glow. She was staring at the treeline with those unblinking burnt honey eyes. "You didn't sleep again," Susan said softly, moving to sit beside her. Ez shook her head. "Couldn't. Kept thinking about those footprints. About who else is out there." Susan took her hand. "We'll figure it out. Together." Ez squeezed her hand but did not smile. The tension in her shoulders was palpable, a weight that seemed to press down on her from all sides. Susan knew she was still struggling with the withdrawal. The tremors were worse now, the sweats more frequent. But Ez refused to show weakness in front of the others. "We need to talk about the supplies," Marlene said, her voice cutting through the morning stillness. She had approached them silently, her face hard, her pearls clutched in her fist. Esmeralda turned to her, her eyes cold. "What about them?" "We're running low. The food Valentina hoarded is almost gone. We need to ration better, or we're going to starve." "Then we ration better," Ez said flatly. "And what about the map?" Marlene pressed. "The rescue point. We need to go there. We need to find a way off this island." "We will," Ez said. "But we need to be smart about it. We need to plan." "We need to move," Marlene insisted. "Every day we wait is another day we could be dead." Ez stood abruptly, her fists clenched at her sides. "I said we will. Now back off." Marlene's eyes narrowed, but she stepped back. She had seen the look in Ez's eyes, the barely contained fury that lurked just beneath the surface. She was not stupid enough to push further. --- The morning passed in uneasy silence. The group moved through their routines mechanically, gathering firewood, filtering water, scanning the treeline for any sign of danger. Susan tried to talk to Ez, but she was distant, her mind elsewhere. "Ez," Susan said, stepping in front of her. "Talk to me." "There's nothing to talk about." "There is. You're shutting down. I can see it." Ez's jaw tightened. "I'm trying to keep us alive. That's all I'm doing." "You're trying to do everything alone. You don't have to. I'm here. Priya is here. We're all in this together." Ez finally looked at her. Her eyes were tired, hollowed out by lack of sleep and the constant gnawing of withdrawal. "I don't know how to do this. I don't know how to let people in." "Then learn." Susan cupped her face. "Start with me. Let me in." Ez leaned into her touch, her eyes closing. "I'm scared," she admitted, her voice barely a whisper. "I'm scared I'm going to fail. I'm scared I'm going to let everyone down." "You won't," Susan said firmly. "You're the strongest person I know. You've already saved my life. You've already saved all of us." Ez opened her eyes. There were tears in them, but she was smiling. "What did I do to deserve you?" "Nothing," Susan said. "That's the point. You don't have to earn love. You just have to accept it." Ez kissed her, soft and sweet. "I love you." "I love you too." --- Priya gathered everyone around the fire that afternoon. Her face was grim, her voice heavy with urgency. "We need to decide what to do about the rescue point," she said. "We can't stay here forever. We're running out of food and water, and whoever left those footprints is still out there." "We go to the rescue point," Marlene said. "It's our only chance." "It's also a trap," Chen countered. "Whoever was here before us didn't make it. What makes you think we will?" "Because we're smarter," Marlene shot back. "Because we're stronger." "Arrogance doesn't keep you alive," Priya said. "Caution does." "Caution will get us killed," Marlene snapped. "We need to take risks." "And what about the footprints?" Delilah asked, her voice quiet. "Whoever left them is still out there. If we go to the rescue point, we could be walking straight into their hands." The group fell silent. The weight of the decision pressed down on them, heavy and suffocating. "We go," Esmeralda said finally. "Tomorrow at dawn. We take the map and we go to the rescue point." "Ez—" Susan started. "I know it's risky. But we don't have a choice. We can't stay here. We need to find a way off this island." Susan looked at her. The certainty in Ez's eyes was unshakeable, a determination that made her heart ache. She nodded slowly. "Then we go together." --- That night, Susan and Ez lay in their hollow, wrapped in each other's arms. The jungle hummed around them, alive with sounds that had become almost familiar. "Ez," Susan whispered. "I need to tell you something." "What is it?" "I'm scared too. I'm scared we're not going to make it off this island. I'm scared I'm going to lose you." Ez pulled her closer. "You're not going to lose me. I promise." "How can you promise that? You don't know what's out there." "I know what's in here." Ez pressed her hand to Susan's chest, over her heart. "And that's enough." Susan kissed her, deep and desperate. "I love you." "I love you too." Ez kissed her back. "And I'm never letting you go." Their bodies came together with an urgency that spoke of fear and hope and a desperate need to feel alive. Ez's hands explored Susan's body, memorizing every curve and dip. Susan's fingers tangled in Ez's hair, pulling her closer. "I need you," Susan breathed. "I need to feel you." "Then feel me." Ez kissed her way down Susan's body, her mouth hot on her skin. She lingered at her breasts, her tongue circling her n*****s until Susan gasped. She pressed her mouth between Susan's thighs, and Susan cried out, her body arching. "I love the way you taste," Ez whispered. "I love the way you feel. I love everything about you." "I love you," Susan gasped. "I love you so much." Ez slipped her fingers inside her, curling them against that perfect spot. Susan shattered, her body convulsing, her release crashing over her in waves. Ez gentled her with soft, sweet kisses until she was trembling. "My turn," Susan said. She pushed Ez onto her back and straddled her. She kissed her way down Ez's body, her tongue circling her n*****s, her fingers pushing inside her. "I love you," Susan whispered. "I love you more than anything." Ez's breath came in ragged gasps. "I love you too. Don't stop." Susan didn't stop. She moved her fingers faster, curling them against that perfect spot, and Ez shattered, her body arching, her mouth opening in a silent scream. Afterward, they lay together, tangled in each other. "Whatever happens tomorrow," Susan whispered. "I want you to know that I love you. I've loved you since the moment you saved me on that ship." Ez kissed her forehead. "I love you too. I've loved you since the moment I saw you in that piano lounge." Susan smiled. "That was the same moment." "Then we were doomed from the start." "Best doom I ever had."
