The word hung in the air like smoke, heavy and suffocating. Susan stared at Valentina, her mind struggling to process what she had just heard.
"Say that again," Susan whispered.
Valentina's face crumpled. Tears streamed down her cheeks, cutting clean tracks through the dirt and grime. "I put your names on the list. All of you. I paid the arms dealer to find you and kill you."
Susan's blood ran cold. "Why? Why would you do that?"
"Because I was trying to protect myself." Valentina's voice cracked. "I was running from my family. They wanted to kill me. I faked my own kidnapping for the insurance money, but they found out. They sent people after me. I thought if I could make it look like someone else was targeting the passengers, they would think I was just another victim."
"You tried to have us killed to save yourself," Esmeralda said. Her voice was ice. She had appeared from the shadows, her face hard, her eyes burning with fury.
"Yes." Valentina's voice was barely a whisper. "Yes, I did."
---
Esmeralda moved so fast Susan barely saw it happen. She crossed the space between them and grabbed Valentina by the throat, slamming her against a tree.
"I should kill you right now," Esmeralda growled. "I should snap your neck and leave your body for the animals."
"Ez, stop!" Susan grabbed her arm. "This isn't the way."
"She tried to kill us. All of us. She put our names on a death list."
"I know." Susan's voice was calm but firm. "But we need to find out who she was working with. She couldn't have done this alone."
Esmeralda's grip tightened for a moment, then she released Valentina. The billionaire collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.
"Talk," Esmeralda said. "Tell us everything."
---
Valentina told them everything. She had been running from her family for months. They wanted her dead because she had threatened to expose their illegal business dealings. She had faked her own kidnapping to collect the insurance money and disappear. But her family had found out and sent the arms dealer after her.
"I thought if I gave him other targets, he would kill them instead of me," Valentina sobbed. "I thought I could buy time. I thought I could get away."
"You thought wrong," Chen said coldly. She had arrived with Priya, her arm still bandaged, her face a mask of fury. "Because of you, the arms dealer was on that ship. Because of you, people died."
Valentina buried her face in her hands. "I know. I know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Sorry wasn't enough. It would never be enough.
---
The group gathered around the fire to decide Valentina's fate. Emotions ran high. Marlene wanted to kill her. Chen wanted to leave her in the jungle to fend for herself. Tiffany sobbed quietly, unable to look at the woman she had trusted.
Susan felt torn. She understood Valentina's desperation, understood the fear that had driven her to such extremes. But she also understood that Valentina had put all of their lives at risk.
"We can't kill her," Susan said finally. "We're better than that."
"Are we?" Marlene asked. "She tried to have us murdered. She doesn't deserve our mercy."
"Maybe not." Susan looked at Valentina, who was trembling in the shadows. "But we're not executioners. We're survivors. And survivors stick together."
---
The decision was made. Valentina would be allowed to stay, but she would be watched at all times. She would work for her keep, contributing to the group's survival instead of hoarding supplies. It was not forgiveness, not yet, but it was a chance.
Susan found Ez by the stream later that night. Her face was still hard, her eyes still burning with fury.
"Ez," Susan said softly. "Talk to me."
"I can't believe you defended her." Ez's voice was flat. "After everything she did."
"I didn't defend her. I just didn't want us to become murderers."
Ez laughed bitterly. "I already am a murderer. I killed a man today. I could feel his neck break under my hands. I felt his life drain away."
Susan stepped closer and took her hands. "You killed a man who was trying to kill us. That's not murder. That's survival."
"Then why do I feel like a monster?"
Susan pulled her close and wrapped her arms around her. "Because you're human. Because you have a heart. That's what makes you different from them."
Ez buried her face in Susan's neck and let herself cry. Susan held her, stroking her hair, whispering words of comfort.
When Ez finally pulled back, her eyes were red and swollen. But they were clearer than before. "I don't know what I would do without you."
"You'll never have to find out."
---
That night, Susan proved it to her.
She led Ez away from the camp, deep into the jungle where the firelight could not reach. The air was warm and thick, heavy with the scent of flowers and damp earth. She pressed Ez against a tree and kissed her, slow and deep.
"Let me take care of you," Susan whispered. "Let me help you forget, even for a little while."
Ez's breath hitched. "Susan—"
"Trust me."
Susan dropped to her knees. She pulled Ez's shorts down and pressed her mouth between her thighs. Ez gasped, her head falling back against the bark, her hands fisting in Susan's hair.
"Yes," Ez breathed. "Yes, don't stop."
Susan didn't stop. She laved Ez with long, flat strokes, her tongue circling her c**t, her fingers pushing inside her. Ez cried out, her body arching, her release crashing over her in waves.
"I love you," Ez gasped. "I love you, I love you, I love you."
Susan stood and kissed her, letting Ez taste herself on her lips. "I love you too."
Susan pressed Ez against the tree and kissed her way down her body. She took her time, worshiping every inch of her skin, tasting the salt on her collarbone, the sweetness of her breasts, the heat between her thighs.
Ez was trembling by the time Susan reached her center. "Please," she begged. "Please, I need you."
"Tell me what you want."
"I want you to make me feel alive. I want you to make me forget."
Susan moved her fingers inside her, slow and deep. "Like this?"
"Yes. Yes, exactly like that."
Susan curled her fingers against that perfect spot and Ez shattered. Her body arched, her mouth opened in a silent scream, and she came undone against Susan's hand.
Susan kissed her through it, soft and gentle, until Ez's trembling stopped and her breathing steadied.
"I love you," Susan whispered. "And I'm never going to let anything happen to you."
Ez pulled her close and held her. "I love you too. And I promise you, we're going to survive this. We're going to get off this island and we're going to have a life together."
Susan smiled. "I'm holding you to that."
