The Secret Behind the Key
Elena watched Adrian disappear into the mansion with Daniel.
Her heart refused to calm down.
The photograph was still in her mind.
The man standing beside Victor and her father had haunted her for five years.
She remembered that night clearly.
She had been leaving Adrian's house after discovering the financial documents. She had walked toward her car when she noticed a black vehicle parked across the street.
The man had been standing beside it.
He had watched her without saying a word.
At the time, she had convinced herself that fear was making her imagine things.
Now she knew she had been right.
He had been real.
And he was still alive.
Elena looked down at Noah.
He was playing with a small toy car, completely unaware of the danger surrounding them.
She knelt beside him.
"Noah."
He looked up.
"Yes, Mommy?"
"I need you to stay close to me."
"Why?"
"Because I want you near me."
He smiled.
"Okay."
She hugged him.
For five years, she had done everything she could to keep him safe.
Now she had brought him directly into the world she had escaped.
She wondered if coming back to Adrian had been a mistake.
Then she remembered the threatening message.
Someone had already found them.
Running had not protected Noah forever.
Maybe staying with Adrian was the only choice left.
Inside the mansion, Adrian stood in his study with the photograph in his hand.
Daniel closed the door.
"We need to be careful."
Adrian looked at him.
"I know."
"Victor cannot know we have this."
"He already knows something."
Daniel frowned.
"How?"
"The box was hidden on my property. Someone wanted Elena to find it."
"Or someone wanted you to find it."
Adrian looked at the key.
"Either way, they want us to follow a trail."
Daniel nodded.
"Which means it could be a trap."
Adrian placed the photograph on his desk.
"Then we find out what they are hiding before they realize we know."
Daniel looked at the letter.
"There is one thing I don't understand."
"What?"
"Why would Michael Hart tell Elena to trust you?"
Adrian remained silent.
"I don't know."
"Your father trusted Michael."
"I know."
"Then maybe they were working together."
Adrian shook his head.
"My father never told me about him."
"Maybe he had a reason."
Adrian picked up the key.
"We need to find what this opens."
Daniel studied it.
"There is a number engraved on it."
Adrian turned it over.
A small number had been carved into the metal.
"Thirty seven."
"Could be a locker."
"Or a safe."
Daniel nodded.
"I'll search the old company records."
Adrian's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Victor.
For several seconds, he simply stared at it.
Then he answered.
"Uncle."
"Adrian."
Victor's voice sounded calm.
"I heard about the incident at your mansion."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You heard quickly."
"I have people who care about you."
"I don't need anyone watching me."
There was a short silence.
"Your father would have wanted me to protect you."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"My father has been dead for years."
"That doesn't mean his family stopped needing protection."
"What do you mean?"
Victor sighed.
"Some secrets should remain buried."
Adrian looked at the photograph.
"What secrets?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about."
"No, I don't."
"Then ask Elena."
Adrian's grip tightened around the phone.
"Why would I ask her?"
"Because she knows more than she has told you."
The call ended.
Adrian stood still.
Daniel looked at him.
"What did he say?"
"He told me to ask Elena."
Daniel frowned.
"About what?"
"I don't know."
Adrian walked toward the door.
He found Elena in the living room with Noah.
She looked up.
"What happened?"
"Victor called."
Her expression immediately changed.
"What did he say?"
"He said you know more than you have told me."
Elena looked away.
"I have told you everything I remember."
"Everything?"
She hesitated.
Adrian noticed.
"What are you hiding?"
"I'm not hiding anything."
"You just hesitated."
"Because I'm afraid."
"Of what?"
Elena stood.
"Of what the truth will do to you."
Adrian walked closer.
"You have spent five years deciding what I can handle."
"I'm sorry."
"Stop apologizing and tell me the truth."
Elena looked at Noah.
"Not in front of him."
Adrian nodded.
They moved into another room.
Elena closed the door.
"There is something I never told you."
Adrian waited.
"When I found the documents five years ago, I also found a recording."
"What recording?"
"Your father and Victor were arguing."
"About the money?"
"I don't know."
"Where is it?"
"I lost it."
"How?"
"Someone broke into my apartment."
Adrian's eyes hardened.
"When?"
"Two days before I left."
"Did they take anything?"
"Yes."
"What?"
"The recording."
Adrian stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was terrified."
"What did you hear before they took it?"
Elena closed her eyes.
"Your father said that if Victor continued, he would expose him."
Adrian's face became cold.
"What was Victor doing?"
"I don't know."
"Did your father mention my name?"
Elena nodded.
"What did he say?"
"He said you could never know."
"Why?"
"Because he was afraid Victor would use you against him."
Adrian stepped backward.
"My father was protecting me."
"Yes."
"Then why didn't he tell me?"
"I don't know."
Adrian looked down.
For the first time, Elena saw uncertainty in his eyes.
The powerful billionaire suddenly looked like a son searching for answers about his dead father.
She stepped closer.
"I'm sorry."
He looked at her.
"I know."
Their eyes met.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Adrian reached for her hand.
She allowed him to take it.
"I don't blame you anymore," he said.
Her heart tightened.
"You should."
"I blamed you for five years."
"You had every reason."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I didn't know the truth."
She looked down at their joined hands.
"I wanted to tell you."
"Then tell me now."
"I will."
He gently squeezed her hand.
"Good."
The door suddenly opened.
Daniel entered.
"I found something."
Adrian released Elena's hand.
"What?"
Daniel held up a file.
"The number on the key."
Adrian took the file.
"It belongs to a storage facility."
"Where?"
"Under the old Blackwood warehouse."
Elena's heart raced.
"The warehouse?"
Adrian looked at her.
"You know it?"
"I went there once."
"When?"
"Five years ago."
"What were you doing there?"
"I followed Victor."
Adrian's expression changed.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I never found anything."
Daniel looked at the documents.
"The storage unit was registered under your father's name."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"This is what the key opens."
Elena nodded slowly.
"When can we go?"
"Tonight."
Daniel shook his head.
"That may be dangerous."
Adrian looked at him.
"Everything is dangerous now."
"Then we should take security."
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"If someone inside the company is helping Victor, bringing a large security team could alert them."
Elena looked worried.
"So what do we do?"
Adrian looked at her.
"You stay here."
"No."
"Elena."
"I'm coming."
"You don't know what we might find."
"I know more about this than you do."
He stared at her.
She refused to back down.
Finally, Adrian nodded.
"Fine."
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"But Noah stays here."
Elena immediately agreed.
They arranged for several trusted guards to remain with Noah.
Before leaving, Elena knelt in front of him.
"Mommy will be back soon."
Noah looked at Adrian.
"Is Daddy going too?"
"Yes."
"Will you bring me something?"
Adrian smiled.
"What do you want?"
"A toy."
"I'll bring you the best one I can find."
Noah smiled.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Adrian touched his shoulder.
"I'll protect your mother."
Noah nodded seriously.
"Protect her very well."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"I will."
They left the mansion shortly afterward.
The drive to the warehouse was quiet.
Elena sat beside Adrian.
She watched the city pass outside the window.
After several minutes, Adrian spoke.
"Are you nervous?"
"Yes."
"Me too."
She looked at him.
"You?"
"I don't like not knowing what I'm walking into."
She smiled faintly.
"You always liked being in control."
"I still do."
"Some things never change."
He looked at her.
"Some things shouldn't."
She understood what he meant.
Their eyes met briefly before Elena looked away.
When they reached the warehouse, Adrian parked several streets away.
The building stood abandoned.
Its windows were dusty.
The sign had almost completely faded.
They approached through a side entrance.
Adrian unlocked the door.
Inside, the air smelled old and damp.
Elena held his arm.
They walked through several dark corridors.
Finally, they reached a row of storage units.
Number thirty seven was at the end.
Adrian inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Elena held her breath.
The door opened.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Adrian switched on his flashlight.
They began searching.
Most contained old company documents.
Then Elena found a brown envelope.
She opened it.
Inside was another photograph.
This time, it showed Adrian's father, Victor, and Michael Hart standing together.
But there was something else.
A fourth person stood behind them.
Elena stared.
She recognized him immediately.
The same man from the recent photograph.
The same man who had followed her five years ago.
Adrian looked at her.
"You know him."
She nodded.
"I do."
Daniel examined the photograph.
"There is a date on the back."
Adrian turned it over.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Elena asked.
He handed it to her.
She read the date.
It was taken six years ago.
One year before she left Adrian.
Elena's hands began trembling.
"This can't be."
Adrian looked at the photograph again.
"Why?"
"Because I saw this man after I left."
"That's impossible."
"No."
She pointed at the picture.
"He looked exactly the same."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then he was still working with them five years later."
Adrian turned toward the boxes.
"We need to find out who he is."
Elena opened another envelope.
A name was written on it.
She stared at it for several seconds.
Then her face went pale.
Adrian noticed.
"What?"
She handed him the envelope.
Adrian read the name.
His expression hardened.
The man they had been searching for was not a stranger.
He was someone Adrian knew.
Someone who had been inside Blackwood Holdings for years.
Someone who had access to almost every secret in the company.
Adrian slowly looked at Elena.
"We have been looking in the wrong place."
Before she could ask what he meant, they heard footsteps outside the storage room.
Someone was coming.
Adrian immediately turned off the flashlight.
He pulled Elena behind him.
Daniel quietly closed the storage door.
The footsteps stopped outside.
A man's voice came through the darkness.
"I know you're in there, Adrian."
Elena's heart nearly stopped.
The voice was familiar.
Adrian looked at her.
Then the door began to open.
