Chapter 6 — The First Test

588 Words
Shayla’s hands trembled as she knelt on the cold stone floor. The training hall had emptied hours ago, but the palace was never truly empty. Shadows lingered, and whispers followed her like a tide she could not escape. Ryker stood nearby, watching. He said nothing, but she felt his eyes—sharp, measured, impossible to ignore. His presence alone was a shield, but it did not protect her from the fear gnawing at her. “You’re ready for your first test,” he said finally, voice calm but lethal. “The twins will challenge you. They will push you to your limits. Fail, and you will learn pain. Survive, and you begin to gain power.” Shayla’s pulse raced. Sadie and Soren. They won’t hold back. A faint click echoed, and the massive doors at the far end of the hall swung open. Two figures stepped in. Heels clicking. Boots thudding. Shadows stretching long across the polished floor. The twins. “Finally, some entertainment,” Sadie purred, eyes glinting like knives. “You’ve been hiding all this time, haven’t you?” Soren’s grin was cruel. “Let’s see what the little toy can do.” Shayla swallowed hard. She had been trained, yes—but facing them directly was different. Her muscles screamed, adrenaline coursing through her veins, cold biting at her skin. Ryker stepped back, eyes dark. “Do not underestimate them. They are fast, brutal, and relentless. Remember what I taught you. Move, observe, survive.” The twins lunged. Sadie to her left, Soren to her right. Shayla moved instinctively, ducking, rolling, feeling the air whip past her as their strikes hit the floor mere inches from her. Heart hammering, she focused, recalling Ryker’s words. Speed. Awareness. Timing. A flicker of power surged in her chest—a warmth she had learned to recognize. She pushed off the floor, landing behind Soren, using her momentum to grab a nearby training dagger. Sadie spun, claws aimed for her shoulder. Shayla blocked, twisting her wrist, forcing Sadie to stumble forward. Her mind raced: she had never felt power like this before, not even in dreams. “You’re stronger than I thought,” Soren hissed, backing away slightly. Shayla didn’t speak. She couldn’t. Every motion had to be precise. Every step, calculated. Sweat dripped down her temple, mixing with blood from a small scratch on her arm. Pain was real—but so was survival. Ryker’s eyes never left her. Calm, precise, unwavering. He didn’t intervene—he let her learn, let her fight, let her grow. The battle lasted minutes that felt like hours. Shayla dodged, struck, rolled, and countered. Every strike she landed was tentative, but it forced the twins to pause. Every block she made chipped away at their confidence. Finally, Sadie froze mid-strike, Soren catching her shoulder. They stared at Shayla, shock flashing in their eyes. “She’s… faster,” Sadie muttered. “More dangerous than I expected,” Soren added. Shayla dropped to her knees, exhausted, muscles screaming, heart pounding like a drum in her ears. Ryker approached, his gaze assessing, unreadable. “You survived,” he said. “Your power is awakening, but this is only the beginning. Remember—fear is fuel. Pain is teacher. And these halls… will not forgive weakness.” Shayla exhaled slowly. The twins retreated, smirking but wary. She had survived her first trial. But as she looked at the shadows creeping along the walls, she realized something chilling: The palace had only just begun to test her.
