🕯️ Part D — The One Who Writes in His Name The silence between them didn’t feel empty anymore. It felt like something waiting. Watching. Listening. Even the air in the library seemed to press closer, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath. She didn’t look away from him. “Then tell me the truth,” she said softly. His jaw tightened. “I just did.” “No,” she replied, her voice steady despite the fear curling in her chest. “You told me a warning. Not the truth.” For a moment, it looked like he might walk away. Like he might close himself off again and disappear behind that cold, controlled distance he wore like armor. But he didn’t. Instead, he looked at the open book beside her. At the underlined sentence. At the words written in his handwriting— STOP NOW. His expression darkened. “That wasn’t there before, was it?” he asked quietly. She shook her head. “I didn’t see anyone come in,” she said. “I didn’t hear anyone either.” His gaze shifted slightly, scanning the shelves, the corners, the dim spaces between rows. Like he was looking for something he knew might already be gone. 🕯️ The Name He Doesn’t Say “Do you know who it is?” she asked. His silence answered first. Then— “Yes.” Her heart skipped. “Then tell me.” He looked at her again. And for the first time since she met him… There was something like hesitation in his eyes. Not fear. Not exactly. Something heavier. Like saying the name would make it real again. “I can’t,” he said finally. Frustration flared in her chest. “You keep saying that. You keep telling me to stay away, to stop, to forget—but you won’t give me anything real. How am I supposed to just walk away when someone is leaving notes in your name and warning me about you?” His voice came out lower this time. Sharper. “Because walking away is the only way you stay safe.” 🌒 The Truth Between the Lines She took a step closer. “So it’s true then,” she said quietly. His brows drew together slightly. “What is?” “That there’s something in your past,” she said, holding his gaze, “something bad enough that someone is using it against you now.” A flicker. Barely visible. But she saw it. He looked away. And that was answer enough. 🕯️ The Thing That Broke Him “The sound in class today,” she continued more gently. “That wasn’t normal fear. That was memory.” His hand tightened slightly at his side. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Then help me understand,” she said. Silence again. Heavy. Then he said something so quietly she almost missed it. “It wasn’t just a sound.” Her breath slowed. “What was it?” His eyes didn’t meet hers this time. “It was the same sound,” he said, voice flat, “as the day everything changed.” A chill ran through her. “What happened that day?” His gaze snapped back to hers. And this time— There was a clear warning in it. “Stop.” One word. Firm. Final. 🌘 The First Crack She should have listened. Any normal person would have. But something inside her refused to step back now. “Did someone get hurt?” she asked. The question hung in the air like a blade. His expression went completely still. Then— “Yes.” The word was quiet. But it carried weight. The kind that doesn’t fade. “Was it your fault?” she whispered. The moment the question left her lips, she wished she could take it back. Because something in his eyes shifted. Something painful. Something raw. “I was there,” he said. Not an answer. Not a denial. Just a truth that felt heavier than either. 🕯️ The Light That Flickers Before she could say anything else— The lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then went out completely. Darkness swallowed the library. A soft sound of electricity cutting off echoed somewhere in the building. Her breath caught. “Stay where you are,” he said immediately. His voice had changed again. Alert. Focused. Dangerously calm. “You think it’s them?” she whispered. “I don’t think,” he replied. “I know.” A cold wave ran down her spine. 🌒 The Voice in the Dark At first, there was nothing. Only the quiet hum of distant electricity and the faint sound of rain beginning outside. Then— A whisper. Soft. Close. Too close. “Still not listening…” Her heart slammed against her ribs. The voice didn’t come from him. It came from somewhere between the shelves. A third presence. Hidden. Watching. 🕯️ The Note That Appears Something slid across the floor. Stopping near her foot. Even in the darkness, she could see the pale shape of folded paper. Her hands trembled as she bent and picked it up. “Don’t open it,” he warned. But she already was. Because she needed to know. She unfolded the note slowly. And even in the dim light filtering from the window— She could see the writing clearly. The same handwriting. The same controlled strokes. But the message— This one was different. Longer. And far more chilling. “You think he’s protecting you.” “But he’s the reason you’re in danger.” “Ask him what happened to the last person who stood where you are now.” Her breath stopped. The paper shook in her hands. Slowly… Very slowly… She lifted her eyes to him. And for the first time— He didn’t look like he had an answer. 🌘 The Question That Changes Everything Her voice came out barely above a whisper. “…What happened to them?” The silence that followed was the heaviest one yet. He didn’t move. Didn’t look away. But something in him— Something deep and guarded— Closed. “They left,” he said. But it didn’t sound like the truth. Not fully. And she knew it. 🕯️ The Line You Can’t Cross Back The whisper came again from the dark. Soft. Satisfied. “She’s already too close now…” The lights flickered once more— And then came back on. Bright. Normal. Like nothing had happened. But everything had. The shelves stood still. The room looked unchanged. Empty. No one else there. No trace of the voice. Except the note still trembling in her hand. And the boy standing in front of her— Looking like he had just watched history begin to repeat itself. 🌑 The Final Warning “Listen to me carefully,” he said, his voice low and urgent now. “This is the last time I’m going to say it.” His eyes held hers. Steady. Serious. “Stay away from me,” he said. “Or you’ll become the next secret they try to bury.”
