CHAPTER 28 A HAND GRIPPED mine as I tried to work up the energy to open my eyes. I was in hospital, right? The machine that measured my pulse was beeping away, sounding far calmer than I felt. For ten minutes, maybe twenty, I’d been trying to sort out the jumbled thoughts in my head with limited success. The hotel, my prison, Ferret-Features. Then Ana, dragging me through the house. Emmy, falling to the ground, a red Rorschach spreading out on her chest. Tell me, Tia, what do you see? Death. I see death. Now I knew how Emmy felt when she saw Ryan die. The utter despair of watching the inevitable without being able to do a damn thing about it. If only I could have turned back the clock and called myself anything but Ashlyn. Because I was the one who’d landed us in this mess, wasn’t I?
