Qadim seemed impressed, too, because he nodded and took another sip from his glass before he set it down and turned his attention to the various dishes and serving bowls on the tabletop. “If I may?” he asked, then gestured toward Madison’s empty plate. “Thank you,” she responded, handing it to him so he could load it up with enchiladas and rice and beans and calabacitas. The finishing touch was a sopapilla placed carefully between the rice and the calabacitas so it wouldn’t get too soggy.
