Collision Course

Morning sunlight poured through the glass walls of Kingsley Group, bathing the executive floor in a warm golden glow. At first glance, it looked like any other workday. Employees hurried between departments with coffee in hand. Phones rang. Meetings began. Deadlines waited. No one knew that before the morning ended, everything would change. Elena Hart stepped out of her office carrying a slim leather portfolio. Today’s investor meeting was one Arthur Kingsley himself had scheduled months before his death. It was too important to postpone. Sophia caught up with her outside the elevator. “I’ve already sent the presentation to their legal team,” she said, handing Elena a tablet. Elena smiled. “I expected nothing less.” Sophia returned the smile before her expression became more serious. “Call me when the meeting ends.” “I will.” The elevator doors opened. Just then, one of the transport coordinators hurried toward them, looking apologetic. “Chairwoman…” “Our company driver called in sick this morning.” Elena frowned slightly. “Sick?” “He said it was food poisoning.” “We’ve tried contacting another driver, but the closest one won’t arrive for almost an hour.” Sophia immediately spoke. “We can reschedule the meeting.” Elena shook her head. “No.” “The investors have already adjusted their schedule twice.” “I’m not making them wait again.” She reached out for the keys the coordinator was holding. “I’ll drive myself.” Sophia hesitated. “Are you sure?” Elena gave her a reassuring smile. “I’ve been driving long before I became Chairwoman.” “There’ll be no problem.” Neither of them noticed the pair of eyes watching from the executive floor above. Vivian Cole stood behind the tinted glass of her office. Her arms were folded neatly across her chest. She watched as Elena crossed the company courtyard and unlocked the black executive sedan. The engine started. The security gate opened. Slowly… The vehicle disappeared into morning traffic. Vivian’s lips curved into the faintest smile. “Drive safely…” Her voice was barely above a whisper. “…Chairwoman.” Traffic flowed steadily through the city. Elena rested one hand on the steering wheel while the other briefly adjusted the tablet resting on the passenger seat. She mentally rehearsed the figures she intended to present. Projected revenue. Expansion forecasts. Risk assessments. The investor meeting could determine Kingsley Group’s next international partnership. She glanced briefly at the navigation display. Only fifteen minutes remaining. Ahead, the road began sloping gently downward toward one of the city’s busiest intersections. The traffic light in the distance shifted from green… To yellow. Instinctively, Elena moved her foot onto the brake pedal. She pressed down. Nothing. Her brow furrowed. She pressed harder. Still nothing. The car continued moving downhill. Faster. A flicker of unease crossed her face. She pumped the brake pedal repeatedly. Once. Twice. Three times. Nothing. The sedan surged forward as though the brakes didn’t exist. Her heartbeat accelerated. “No…” She gripped the steering wheel tighter. The intersection was approaching far too quickly. Cars crossed from both directions. Pedestrians waited near the traffic lights. She reached for the parking brake with trembling fingers, pulling it carefully. The vehicle shuddered… But refused to slow enough. A sharp breath escaped her lips. “No…” For the first time in weeks… Fear appeared in Elena’s eyes. Less than two streets away… Adrian drove back from a client meeting, absently listening to a voicemail through his car’s speakers. His attention drifted toward the traffic ahead. Then something caught his eye. A familiar black executive sedan. Elena’s. His expression softened for only a second. Then something felt wrong. The vehicle wasn’t slowing. The traffic light ahead had already turned red. Yet Elena’s brake lights never appeared. Adrian frowned. “Elena…” He immediately reached for his phone and dialed her number. Inside the speeding sedan, Elena’s phone vibrated across the passenger seat. She answered without taking her eyes off the road. “Adrian..” Her voice shook. “The brakes…” “They’re gone.” Every trace of hesitation vanished from Adrian’s face. “Listen to me.” His voice became sharp. “Keep both hands on the steering wheel.” “I’m trying!” “Don’t panic.” “I’m not panicking!” Another car crossed the intersection. Elena swerved violently to avoid it. Tyres screamed against the asphalt. “Use the parking brake slowly,” Adrian shouted. “I already did!” “It isn’t enough!” “Downshift if you can!” “I’ve tried!” Adrian looked ahead. The distance between Elena’s vehicle and the intersection disappeared frighteningly fast. There wasn’t enough time. Not anymore. His jaw tightened. Without another word… He slammed his foot onto the accelerator. His SUV surged forward. He angled toward Elena’s vehicle. The only opening left was the passenger side. If he struck it correctly… He could force her away from the line of oncoming traffic and toward the reinforced roadside barrier. It was dangerous. It might even kill him. But doing nothing would almost certainly kill her. Adrian tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “I’m sorry…” He whispered. Then he turned sharply. The collision exploded across the intersection. Metal slammed into metal. Glass burst outward like rain. Both vehicles spun violently across the road. Airbags deployed with deafening force. Elena’s sedan crashed sideways into the concrete safety barrier. Adrian’s SUV spun twice before slamming into a streetlight. For one endless moment… Everything became still. Smoke drifted into the morning air. Car alarms echoed through the intersection. And the city watched in stunned silence. Smoke drifted slowly above the wreckage. For several long seconds… No one moved. Then the sound came. A child cried somewhere on the sidewalk. Someone shouted for an ambulance. Another person screamed, “Call emergency services!” Within moments, traffic came to a complete standstill. Drivers abandoned their vehicles and ran toward the crash site. “The black sedan…” “That’s the Chairwoman’s car!” “Oh my God…” “Isn’t that Mr. Kingsley?” People recognized them almost immediately. Whispers spread through the gathering crowd. “It’s Chairwoman Elena.” “And Executive Director Adrian Kingsley.” “Someone help them!” Inside his SUV, Adrian struggled to breathe. The airbag had deflated across his chest. Pain shot through his left shoulder every time he tried to move. A thin trail of blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow, blurring part of his vision. Someone outside shouted, “Sir, don’t move!” “The ambulance is coming!” Adrian ignored them. His eyes searched desperately through the shattered windshield. Only one thing mattered. Elena. Using his uninjured arm, he forced his damaged door open. The metal groaned in protest. He stumbled onto the road. His legs almost gave way beneath him, but he caught himself against the side of the SUV. Every step sent sharp pain through his body. Still… He kept walking. People rushed toward him. “Sir, you’re bleeding!” “You need to sit down!” He shook them off. “Move.” His voice was weak. But firm. When he reached Elena’s sedan, his heart tightened. The front of the vehicle had been crushed against the concrete barrier. The windshield was fractured into a web of tiny cracks. The driver’s airbag had deployed. Elena remained inside. Motionless. “Elena…” His voice barely carried. No response. Adrian pulled at the driver’s door. It wouldn’t move. He tried again. Nothing. Ignoring the pain tearing through his shoulder, he braced one foot against the damaged frame and pulled with everything he had. The door finally gave way. Inside… Elena slowly opened her eyes. She looked disoriented. A small cut along her forehead allowed a thin line of blood to trail down her temple. Bruises were already beginning to darken across one arm. She blinked several times before recognizing the face before her. “Adrian…” Relief flooded his expression. “You’re okay.” She tried to sit upright but winced immediately. “My head…” “I know.” “Don’t move too quickly.” Very carefully, Adrian released her seatbelt. He slipped one arm around her shoulders, supporting most of her weight as she climbed out of the wrecked vehicle. The crowd around them collectively exhaled. “She’s alive.” “Thank God…” Someone began applauding in relief before quickly stopping, overcome with emotion. Sirens echoed in the distance. Growing louder. Elena steadied herself against Adrian. Only then did she truly look at him. Blood stained the sleeve of his shirt. His face was pale. His breathing had become uneven. Realization slowly crossed her face. “You…” Her voice trembled. “You could’ve been killed.” Adrian looked at her for a long moment. Despite the pain… Despite the blood… A faint smile touched his lips. “Not before making sure…” He struggled to finish the sentence. “…you weren’t.” Elena stared at him, unable to speak. Before she could say another word… Adrian’s knees suddenly buckled. His body gave way beneath him. He collapsed onto the pavement. “Adrian!” Elena dropped beside him without thinking, ignoring the pain in her own body. Around them, paramedics rushed through the crowd carrying emergency equipment. The chaos returned. But this time… It wasn’t to save two lives. It was to save the man who had risked his own to protect the woman he still loved.
