Chapter9

Ethan was confident that he could bring happiness to both Lily and Emma. With the person he had become, he believed he could do anything necessary to make the two of them truly happy and secure. In fact, it wasn’t just Lily and Emma he intended to lift up and bring joy to; he also wanted to support the entire Evans family. He knew he could even save the Evans family business with ease and restore it to its former glory. "What? You're going to make Lily and Emma happy? Did I hear that right?" Grace’s tone dripped with disbelief, her expression full of disdain as she looked down on him. Unfazed, Ethan met her gaze with quiet assurance and nodded confidently. Grace let out a mocking laugh. “Hahaha… Ethan! You really are good at spouting nonsense, aren’t you? How could you possibly make them happy when you can’t even take care of yourself? Just look at you—you're nothing but trash. It’s utterly embarrassing!” she sneered, her scornful words piercing the air like knives. Duncan, who had been watching from the side with a sneer of his own, chimed in with contempt, "You’ll always be a loser, Ethan. So stop talking nonsense and dreaming big like that. Lily will never be yours! Never!" The sharp rejection from his in-laws cut deep. He had come with genuine intentions, hoping to make a difference, to be received as part of the family. But instead, his good intentions were met with ridicule and rejection. They didn’t care about his efforts; they only saw him as worthless. Ethan took a slow, steady breath, calming himself. He had learned not to let their words get under his skin. With a calm expression, he replied, “I understand this family is in a rough place. The business is on the brink of collapse. I came back to offer my help, to support you all. But if this is the reception I get, if this is how you see me… it makes me wonder why I’d even bother,” Ethan said, his voice steady, though disappointment was plain in his eyes. Grace threw her head back, laughing loudly, as if she’d just heard a joke. “Oh, Ethan! Do you even hear yourself? Are you still dreaming? Do you still imagine you’re some rich, important person?” Her voice dripped with mockery, each word laced with disdain. If only Grace knew the truth—that Ethan was actually the grandson of one of the founders of the Zenith Group, a powerful conglomerate with the means to buy out nearly every business in the city combined. If only she knew that the man she had always viewed as “trash” was, in reality, more valuable than anyone in her social circle, far wealthier than anyone she’d ever known. But he stayed silent, unwilling to let his identity or his wealth be the reason they changed their minds about him. They would have to accept him for who he was, not what he had. “Enough, Ethan,” Grace snapped, the condescension in her voice apparent. “Stop your delusions. Let’s pretend, just for a moment, that you could actually help this family, that you could really make my daughter and granddaughter happy,” she said, her tone growing more serious. For a split second, Ethan thought she was coming to her senses, that maybe she’d finally allow him to be with Lily and Emma, that she’d finally recognize his value. “But the only way you can accomplish that,” she continued with a sneer, “is by signing these divorce papers. Leave this house and never come back!” She thrust the papers toward him, smirking as though she’d just won some twisted game. Ethan had anticipated this moment, knowing deep down that Grace would never truly accept him. She would never see the man he had become, no matter how much he proved himself. Even if he displayed his wealth, his accomplishments, and his loyalty, she would still dismiss him as worthless. So, Ethan reached for the divorce papers lying on the table, his mind made up. He was ready to make his position clear to the Evans family, once and for all. “You want me to sign these papers? Is that it?” he asked, his voice calm and steady. Everyone watched in stunned silence, all assuming he was finally surrendering, finally bowing under the relentless pressure they’d placed on him. “Yes, sign it!” Grace said, her eyes gleaming with triumph. “Sign it, and you’ll be freeing this family from all the misery you’ve caused. Then, your silly dream of making Lily and Emma happy will come true… just not with you around.” For the first time since Lily had married Ethan, Grace actually smiled at him. Every encounter between them had been filled with harsh words and scorn, but now, as her victory seemed assured, she looked at him as though he were beneath her. “Alright then,” Ethan replied, his voice steady. Across the room, Lily watched him, a pang of sorrow piercing her heart. The faint hope she’d held for a future with Ethan, a future where they and their daughter could be happy, was slipping away. ‘Maybe true happiness with Ethan is just a dream,’ she thought, her heart heavy with regret. But just as everyone thought he would reach for a pen, Ethan surprised them. Instead of signing the papers, he took them and, with a deliberate motion, tore them in half, his movements slow and measured. “What are you doing?! Have you completely lost your mind?!” Grace shrieked, her face a mixture of fury and disbelief. Ethan’s gaze swept over each member of the Evans family, his expression resolute. He locked eyes with Grace, his voice firm and unwavering. “I will leave here. But let me make one thing clear: I, Ethan Hunter, vow to bring happiness to Lily and Emma. I will make them a queen and a princess in this world.” The room fell silent, his words echoing, leaving everyone in shock. With his final words hanging in the air, Ethan, known in his circles as the “War God,” turned and walked out of the Evans household, his resolve as strong as ever. Outside, Ethan paused, taking a deep breath as he let the cool evening air fill his lungs. He closed his eyes briefly, gathering his thoughts. “I have to be patient,” he murmured to himself, his voice quiet but filled with determination. “For Lily and Emma’s sake. I’ll prove to them that I can make my wife and daughter happy.” A few minutes later, the online taxi he’d called arrived and stopped in front of him. Ethan climbed into the back seat, letting out a long, steady breath as he tried to release the tension of the day. He closed his eyes, picturing the future he would build for his family—a future filled with happiness and security. Suddenly, the car came to an abrupt halt, jerking him forward. If not for his quick reflexes, he might have been thrown against the seat in front. “What’s going on?” he asked, his voice calm but tinged with curiosity. “Sorry, sir! Someone just cut across our lane!” the driver replied, sounding shaken. Ethan looked out the window and saw a sleek black car blocking their path. “Unbelievable,” he muttered under his breath. “Are they looking for trouble?” With a calm, measured expression, Ethan stepped out of the taxi, prepared to confront whoever had caused this disruption. A man, dressed impeccably in a suit, stepped out of the luxury car, his demeanor respectful and formal. Austin bowed slightly and said, "Good afternoon, Young Master Ethan" "What is it now, Austin? I thought I made myself clear at the airport," Ethan said. ***** Author’s Note: Thank you so much for reading and being part of this journey!
