Lily glanced at Ethan, who looked visibly angry. So, she decided to forcefully take her daughter from her mother's arms.
"I’ve told you over and over, Mom, never be harsh with Emma. She's still a child. Don't break her spirit with your ways,” Lily said angrily.
Grace felt a bit guilty for what she had said. She then responded, "I was only trying to scare her, not really lock her up. I just want her to know that the man in front of her isn't worthy of being called 'Dad.' The one who deserves that title is Walter."
Hearing this, Lily's heart strongly rejected the idea. The thought of marrying Walter made her sick.
Not wanting the situation to escalate into a bigger argument, Lily politely dismissed Walter.
"Walter, I appreciate your intentions. You're from a respectable family, and honestly, I don't think I'm suitable for you. I'm already married, and if we force this, it could damage your family's good name. So, it would be better for you to give up on this and find someone more suitable for you,” Lily said softly.
Walter stood up and walked closer. Smiling, he said, “It doesn't matter, Lily. You don't need to think so far ahead. No one would look down on me or my family for marrying you.”
“In fact, I think the opposite would happen. People would probably praise me for marrying a perfect woman like you,” he added.
Ethan felt sick hearing that. The anger that had already built up inside him made it impossible for him to remain silent any longer.
“Walter! Have you no shame? Lily has made it clear she doesn’t want to marry you. Why are you still pushing it?” Ethan growled.
Abner’s face darkened at Ethan's words. He couldn’t accept someone he deemed beneath his status speaking to him so rudely.
"Why should I be ashamed? I came here with many gifts as compensation for marrying Lily. The Evans family has already accepted my proposal because I'm also making a big investment in their company. It’s like I’ve already ‘bought’ Lily from them. So, you should just accept it," Walter said, completely unaware of the consequences of his words.
Ethan could no longer hold back.
How dare he treat his wife as if she were some kind of object!
Ethan’s eyes widened as a deadly aura filled the room, making everyone shudder, including Walter, who took two steps back.
Then, with just 10% of his strength, Ethan punched Walter in the stomach, sending him flying about 15 feet before slamming into the wall.
“You said you ‘bought’ Lily?! Are you asking to be killed?!” Ethan shouted.
What he had just done left everyone in the room wide-eyed and speechless.
Duncan couldn’t believe what Ethan had just done to Walter. He feared that Walter would withdraw his proposal to marry Lily because of this.
"Ethan! What kind of foolishness is this? How dare you hit Walter!" Duncan shouted, veins popping out of his neck.
Ethan turned to his father-in-law, his eyes blazing. “You’re defending this man who insulted Lily? You accept that? It’s disgusting to accept it just for the gifts this scumbag is offering.”
Duncan fell silent, stung by Ethan’s words.
Now it was Grace’s turn to step forward. She slapped Ethan hard, the sound echoing throughout the house.
“How dare you hit Walter here! What he said is true. That’s just how it is. A woman is bought by a man, just like you did in the past. The only difference is the dowry!” Grace said, standing up for Walter.
His mother-in-law was clearly blinded by wealth. All she cared about was money and luxury, constantly scheming to secure investments to save the Evans family business from bankruptcy, just to earn favor with other family members. She didn’t truly care about Lily’s feelings.
Walter, who had been in pain, now stood up. He seemed about to say something when a hard slap landed on his cheek.
“You think you can buy me? Am I some kind of object to you?!” Lily snapped.
Everyone was shocked. No one expected Lily to be this bold.
"T-that’s not what I meant. What your mom said is true. I just phrased it wrong," Walter stammered, trying to defend himself.
"It's over, Walter! I never want to see you again. Don’t expect us to get married!" Lily said, filled with disappointment.
Walter was furious. He blamed Ethan for Lily’s harsh rejection.
“This is all your fault, you trash! I’ll teach you a lesson!” Walter shouted, his voice shaking.
He then pulled out his phone from his jacket pocket and called someone. “Get in here, now!”
Moments later, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed as 10 men hired by Walter marched into the house in a neat formation.
“We’re ready, sir. How can we assist you?” asked one of the men, whose menacing face and tall, muscular body towered over Ethan’s 6-foot frame.
"You'd better apologize to me for what you’ve done, or you’ll face the consequences!" Walter said with a sly grin.
“Why would I apologize to you? If anything, you’re the one who should apologize to me,” Ethan replied, showing no fear despite the 10 intimidating men in front of him.
Walter grew more irritated by Ethan’s defiance.
“So, you’d rather die than apologize to me, huh? You’ve got a lot of nerve.”
"Why should I apologize to you? You're the one who should be asking for forgiveness from me and Lily."
“You! You hit me, and now you’re slandering me! Because of you, Lily’s furious and rejected me. Apologize! Bow down before me!” Walter demanded, his voice trembling with rage.
But Ethan just laughed. Walter’s words were so ridiculous they amused him.
Ethan glanced at the 10 men still lined up behind Walter.
“So, if I don’t apologize, you’re going to have them beat me up? Get real, Walter! I could take them all down in less than 5 seconds,” Ethan said seriously.
It wasn’t a bluff. Not long ago, during a peacekeeping mission, he had been surrounded by 1,000 heavily armed rebels, and he neutralized all of them without a scratch.
“You’re really trying to challenge me, huh!” Walter’s voice trembled again.
He turned to his hired thugs, who were all trained fighters.
“Beat him! Make him crippled!” he ordered.
The entire Evans family shut their eyes in fear. Lily panicked and immediately covered her daughter’s eyes.
Emma cried loudly, hearing that her father was about to be beaten.
But the men didn’t move.
"Hey! Why aren’t you doing anything? Get him now!" Walter screamed.
