A Lieutenant Colonel delivered gifts to the Evans family, leaving Walter confused and wondering about the person capable of ordering such a high-ranking officer to deliver gifts.
"Who could order a Lieutenant Colonel to deliver gifts?" Walter thought to himself.
His face turned pale as he imagined the person behind these extravagant presents.
"For the Evans family? Who exactly?" Grace asked, her curiosity piqued.
Naturally, everyone was eager to know who the gifts were intended for. After all, Gisel was the only unmarried daughter in the Evans family. Yet, as far as they knew, Gisel hadn’t introduced any man to them for quite some time. This made them all uncertain.
"The gifts include: a diamond ring worth $20 million, a supercar valued at $40 million, Villa Edelweiss at the foot of the mountain with the most stunning views and the highest price, along with women’s clothing, shoes, and handbags, all worth hundreds of thousands!" Lieutenant Colonel Andres declared.
Andres made no mention of the sender, following Max's orders to conceal the identity of the War God.
Ethan knew this was all Max’s doing, though he neither expected nor refused it.
In the eyes of the Evans family, there was only one person who could afford such gifts—and that was Walter, the man proposing to Lily.
Grace glanced at Walter, and soon the rest of the family followed her gaze.
"These gifts are from you, right?" Grace asked.
"Wow... Sis, you're so lucky to have a future son-in-law like Walter! Not only is he incredibly wealthy, but he's also thoughtful and generous to Lily. And these gifts are so extravagant!" Lea, Grace's sister, exclaimed in awe.
Lea then glanced at her daughter, Gisel, who was squinting at the diamond ring in the open box.
"Look at your cousin. She managed to get herself a rich man. Now Lily is going to be above us in status. You should aim to be like her. Find yourself a wealthy man like Walter!" Lea said to her daughter.
Gisel straightened up, her face sour after hearing her mother's words.
"I can find someone even richer than him. Don’t worry, Mom!" Gisel replied, shooting a sharp glance at Lily.
Deep down, Gisel was envious of Lily for landing a rich man who could give her anything she wanted. This stirred an obsession in Gisel to find an even wealthier man.
Had Gisel known that Ethan was behind all these lavish gifts, she would undoubtedly have gone after him—the man she had once been interested in—to steal him from Lily.
She was willing to do anything for wealth.
"Then go for it! Stop just talking about it! You don’t want to stay single forever, right? You're pretty, use that to your advantage and find a rich guy. And when you do, make sure to introduce him to the family right away!" Grace teased.
Grace’s comment slightly offended Lea. Though she had just urged her daughter to find a wealthy man, it was clear that her sister-in-law’s words were meant to belittle Gisel.
"Yeah. Just make sure he’s not like the last one. Pretty face, but you married a useless guy!" Lea shot back, returning the jab.
Realizing that her sister's words were a dig, Grace quickly changed the subject.
"Walter, thank you so much for all these gifts. You've really impressed me!" Grace said warmly.
"Yes, Walter, I’d like to thank you too. These gifts far exceed our expectations," Duncan added with a broad smile.
Walter, who had no idea about the expensive gifts that he couldn’t possibly afford, especially since the villa alone was worth $150 million, hesitated.
"Uh… Yeah, Aunt, Uncle, I…"
"I get it," Grace interjected. "You're trying to prove yourself in front of Ethan, right? Since earlier, he insulted you by saying the diamond you gave was fake. So now, you’re giving Lily even more lavish gifts!"
Walter found himself in a difficult position. On one hand, if he didn’t claim the gifts as his, he would be utterly embarrassed in front of Lily’s entire family. On the other hand, if he claimed them as his own and the soldier contradicted him, it would surely end his chances with Lily.
He scratched his head, his face flushed with embarrassment, praying that the soldier hadn’t overheard the conversation.
"Y-yeah, Aunt. I gave these gifts to Lily because I felt that what I gave her earlier wasn’t nearly good enough. I’m sorry if the first gift didn’t live up to expectations!" Walter stammered, unsure.
"Wow… Thank you so much, Walter! These gifts are truly magnificent!" Grace said gratefully.
Suddenly, Andres, who had been listening to their conversation, burst out laughing.
"Who did you say gave these gifts?" Andres asked.
His booming voice silenced the room. No one dared to answer the Lieutenant Colonel’s question, knowing that if they got it wrong, there could be trouble.
"Who had the audacity to claim they gave these gifts?" Andres demanded again, his tone even harsher.
Duncan, fearing the consequences, spoke up. "Didn’t Walter give these gifts? He just said so!"
"Walter? What does he look like? I’ve never heard that name in my life!" Andres retorted.
The Evans family was stunned. Everyone immediately turned to Walter.
"Walter, these aren’t from you?" Grace asked, her expression shocked.
"Wait a minute! I think I remember Walter!" Andres exclaimed.
Walter, who had been sweating profusely and turning pale, suddenly felt a wave of relief.
"Phew... Saved! Maybe the person who sent the gifts is also named Walter," Walter thought to himself.
"I met Walter two years ago. He was my buddy’s three-legged dog. He was adorable. But sadly, he’s dead now," Andres said with a straight face.
"What? Walter was a dog?" Lea asked.
Then, after a brief pause, she burst into laughter. Soon, the entire family joined in, except for Duncan and Grace, who looked furious.
Walter was utterly humiliated.
His face turned as white as a sheet. He wished he could disappear, the shame was unbearable.
Lea quickly grabbed the gifts and handed them to Gisel.
"If these weren’t from Walter, and they definitely couldn’t be from Ethan, then these gifts must be for Gisel. After all, she’s the only unmarried one in the family!" Lea declared, slipping the ring onto Gisel’s finger.
Grace looked at Walter with deep disappointment.
"I never expected you to lie like this! I’m so disappointed in you!" Grace said, her face flushed with embarrassment.
