The Rejected Mate

451 Words
The Silver Moon Pack celebrated beneath a sky filled with stars. Music echoed through the village as wolves from every corner gathered to witness the annual Mate Ceremony—the night every young werewolf dreamed of. Lyra Nightshade stood at the edge of the crowd, her heart racing. Tonight was her eighteenth birthday. Tonight she would finally discover her fated mate. She closed her eyes as the Moon Goddess' blessing spread warmth through her body. "Please... let my mate accept me." For years she had admired Alpha Lucian Blackwood from afar. He was powerful, respected, and feared by every neighboring pack. Deep inside, she prayed fate would choose him. The High Priest raised his silver staff. "The Moon Goddess has spoken." One by one, young wolves stepped forward and found their mates amid cheers and tears of joy. Then it was Lyra's turn. The moment her eyes met Lucian's, a powerful force exploded inside her chest. Mate. She gasped. "So... it's him." Lucian froze as the same bond struck him. For one brief second, surprise filled his eyes. Then his expression turned cold. Ice cold. He stepped back. "I..." his voice echoed across the silent square. "I reject Lyra Nightshade as my mate." The world stopped. The cheers vanished. Every werewolf stared at Lyra in disbelief. "No..." She shook her head as tears gathered in her eyes. "Alpha... why?" Lucian looked away. "A weak omega can never stand beside me." "I deserve a Luna worthy of my throne." Gasps spread through the crowd. Some laughed. Others whispered. Lyra felt hundreds of eyes judging her. Her knees nearly gave way. The sacred mate bond shattered, sending unbearable pain through her heart. Blood trickled from the corner of her lips. She collapsed onto the cold ground. Her wolf howled in agony. The Moon Goddess had chosen. But her mate had rejected her. An elder stepped forward. "According to pack law, a rejected mate has no place in the Alpha's territory." Lucian didn't object. Instead, he turned his back on her. "Leave." Just one word. One word destroyed her life. Before sunrise, Lyra was forced beyond the borders of the Silver Moon Pack with nothing except a torn cloak and the pain in her heart. She wandered through the dark forest for hours. Rain began to fall. Thunder shook the sky. She didn't know where she was going. She no longer cared. Then... A terrifying roar echoed through the mountains. The ground trembled. The trees bent. Ancient chains snapped somewhere deep inside the forbidden Hell Forest. Two glowing crimson eyes slowly opened in the darkness. A deep voice echoed through the night. "I have waited a thousand years..." "...and my mate has finally come."
