THE PIVOTAL TURNING POINT

MOLLIE POV The deafening roar shook the stone walls of my chamber, throwing me flat against the heavy oak headboard as the entire eastern wing trembled. The glass panes of the arched windows rattled sharply, and several decorative porcelain vases slid off the mantelpiece, shattering into tiny pieces across the floor. Outside, panicked shouts immediately filled the courtyard, followed by the deep ring of the fortress alarm bells signaling a major breach. I scrambled off the mattress, my heart hammering against my ribs as smoke began to seep under the c***k of my bedroom door. The fortress was in absolute chaos, and every protective instinct I had honed during those brutal training sessions screamed at me to move. I reached down, quickly strapping my concealed daggers to my thighs, refusing to be caught defenseless in the middle of a war zone. A faint click from the balcony balcony window made me freeze, my hand staying glued to the hilt of my blade. The heavy curtains rustled, though the wind outside had died down after the blast. I kept my breath shallow, dropping my center of gravity into a low stance just as a silent, masked assassin slipped into the room. The intruder wore midnight-black leather armor, their face completely covered by a dark cloth, and the faint light of the moon caught the deadly gleam of a long silver blade in their right hand. Before I could even shout for the guards, the assassin lunged directly at my throat with terrifying speed. I rolled to the left, the silver blade slicing through the empty air where my head had been just a second before. The attacker recovered instantly, spinning around to sweep their leg under mine, but I leaped backward, creating a small pocket of space between us. "Who sent you?" I demanded, drawing my twin daggers and crossing them in front of my chest, my eyes locked onto the narrow slits of the attacker's mask. The assassin did not say a single word, answering only with another vicious downward s***h aimed straight at my chest. I blocked the strike, the metallic clash of our weapons echoing loudly through the small room, sending a painful jolt of vibration directly up my arms. The attacker was physically stronger, pressing the weight of their blade down against my daggers until my knees began to buckle under the immense pressure. I remembered the rigorous tactical training Brian had forced me to endure, reminding myself that a human could never win a game of brute force against a supernatural opponent. Using the attacker's own momentum against them, I suddenly dropped to the floor, letting their heavy blade slide harmlessly over my shoulder. The assassin stumbled forward, losing their balance for a fraction of a second, and I seized the moment to drive my elbow directly into their ribs. A muffled grunt escaped their mask, and as they staggered back, I swung my right dagger upward in a swift, calculated arc, slicing deeply through the leather sleeve of their right arm. Dark crimson blood sprayed across the stone floor, and the assassin let out a sharp cry of pain, their fingers losing their grip on a heavy, sealed metal cylinder they had been carrying in their left vest pocket. The object clattered loudly against the floorboards, rolling into the shadows near the bedpost. Footsteps thundered down the outer corridor, accompanied by the unmistakable, suffocating pressure of a furious alpha aura that made the air in the room turn incredibly heavy. The assassin glanced toward the door, realizing their time had officially run out, and they quickly turned, vaulting back out of the shattered balcony window into the smoky night below. The heavy bedroom door was violently kicked off its hinges, splintering into pieces as Brian burst into the room with his claws fully extended. His dark hair was disheveled, his clothes were singed from the explosion, and his eyes carried a wild, predatory intensity that swept over the room until they finally landed on me. "Mollie," Brian growled, his chest heaving as he rushed to my side, grabbing my shoulders with trembling hands to inspect me for wounds. "Are you hurt? Did that bastard touch you?" "I am fine, Brian, I am not bleeding," I said, my voice shaking slightly as I gently pushed his hands down, pointing toward the open balcony. "The assassin just went out the window. They were incredibly fast, but I managed to hit their arm before they could finish the job." Brian walked over to the window, peering down into the darkness of the courtyard before his eyes scanned the floor, tracking the trail of fresh blood I had drawn from the intruder. He stopped right near the bedpost, his foot brushing against the object the assassin had dropped during our struggle. He reached down, picking up the custom weapon the attacker had abandoned in their frantic escape. "Look at the pommel of this blade," Brian murmured, his jaw tightening into a hard line as he held up a discarded silver dagger for me to see. "The intricate wolf engraving along the hilt is distinct. This belongs to a highly trained elite strike team from the Silvermane Palace." I stared at the weapon, a cold dread washing over me as the reality of his words settled into my mind. "The Silvermane Palace? That means Alpha Arthur sent them." "Arthur has breached our outer borders under the cover of the explosion," Brian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that vibrated with pure malice. "He sent his personal executioners into the heart of my home to take you back, or to make sure you never speak again." "Why would he risk an all-out war with the Nightshade Clan just to kill me?" I asked, shaking my head as I looked at the broken room. "It does not make sense. I am supposed to be just a regular pack girl to him." "We are going to find out exactly what that tyrant is hiding," Brian muttered, his eyes narrowing as he spotted the sealed metal cylinder lying near the rug. He walked over and scooped up the heavy container, his nostrils flaring as he caught the scent left behind on the surface. "The assassin risked their life to carry this inside the fortress. I highly doubt it is a standard set of war plans." "Be careful, it might be booby-trapped with wolfsbane or explosives," I warned, stepping closer to his side as he examined the intricate lock mechanism on the top of the container. Brian did not hesitate, his sharp claws extending further as he used his immense alpha strength to violently rip open the reinforced top of the sealed cylinder, completely bypassing the locking mechanism with a loud metallic screech. He reached inside, his expression dark, fully expecting to pull out a map of our border weaknesses or a list of regional spies. Instead, his fingers wrapped around a rolled piece of thick parchment, and his eyes widened in complete shock as he pulled it into the dim light. I leaned closer, my breath catching in my throat as I saw the dark, crimson fluid staining the edges of the paper, recognizing the official royal seal pressed into the wax at the very bottom. Brian unrolled the document, his eyes scanning the elegant, cruel handwriting before he looked up at me with a face that had gone completely pale. "Mollie, look at the date on this document," Brian whispered, his voice shaking with an emotion I had never heard from him before as he held the paper directly in front of my face. My eyes darted across the blood-stained lines, reading the official royal decree signed by Alpha Arthur himself, which explicitly ordered the immediate, quiet execution of my older brother, Captain Kaelen, dated just three days ago—long after the date Mollie was told he died.
