Mollie’s POV
The dark warrior stepped closer, his heavy leather boots clicking loudly against the stone floor as he lowered my father's blood-stained silver sword toward the ground.
My heart shattered into a million pieces right there in the hallway, the harsh reality of my parents' sudden deaths crushing the last bit of air out of my lungs. Alpha Arthur quickly stepped between us, his face tight as he ushered me away from the corridor and led me deep into the grand, imposing heart of the Silvermane Palace.
Helen, my late mother’s closest lifelong friend, met us in the drawing room, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and something dark that I could not quite understand yet. She wrapped her thin arms around me, but her embrace felt cold, stiff, and completely empty of any real comfort.
"You will stay here with us now, Mollie," Helen whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she smoothed down the collar of my torn jacket. "The palace will keep you safe from the outside world, you have no one else left to turn to anyway."
"I don't want a room, Helen, I want my family back," I choked out, pulling away from her touch because the stifling air of the palace felt like a heavy golden cage closing around me.
"Your parents are gone, child, you must accept your new reality," Alpha Arthur said, his deep voice booming across the grand room as he poured himself a drink. "You are an orphan now, without a mate, without a pack rank, you will live under our roof and follow our rules."
That very night, as I sat alone in a massive, cold bedroom surrounded by towering stone walls, a fierce, silent vow hardened inside my chest. I looked at my bruised hands and swore to myself that I would never let myself be vulnerable again, I would never depend on a mate, a pack, or anyone else to protect me. If I was going to survive in this corrupted palace, I had to build my own physical strength and turn my broken heart into absolute iron.
The next morning, I threw myself into a brutal daily training routine inside the palace grounds, showing up before sunrise and leaving long after sunset. I ran until my lungs burned like wildfire, lifted heavy iron weights until my muscles screamed in agony, and struck the heavy wooden training dummies until my knuckles bled open. I poured every ounce of my agonizing pain, hot anger, and deep sorrow into pushing my body past its absolute limits every single day.
"You are going to kill yourself at this rate, Mollie," Chloe’s voice drifted over from the edge of the training arena one afternoon.
I did not stop my movement, instead driving my elbow hard into the wooden target, splintering the top edge before turning around to glare at my former best friend. Chloe stood there in a beautiful silk dress, looking down her nose at my sweat-drenched training clothes and wrapped hands.
"What do you want, Chloe?" I asked, my breathing heavy, my voice completely stripped of the warmth we used to share.
"Damien is worried about you, we both are," she said, though a small, mocking smile played at the corner of her lips. "You look completely unhinged out here, hitting blocks of wood won't bring your parents back, you know."
"Tell your future Alpha that I don't need his worry, and I certainly don't need yours," I spat back, grabbing a heavy metal staff from the rack and spinning it tightly. "Get out of my way before I mistake you for a target."
Chloe scrolled loudly, turning on her heel and marching away toward the main courtyard, leaving me alone with my rage once more.
Weeks bled into months, my soft frame changing into lean, powerful muscle as I trained alongside the palace guards, refusing to speak to anyone unless it was absolutely necessary. The dynamic inside the palace grew more tense by the day, the servants scurrying down the hallways with anxious looks on their faces as heavy rumors began to spread through the corridors.
"Have you heard?" a young maid whispered to another near the palace kitchen while I stood in the shadows, washing the dirt off my arms. "The terrifying leader of the Nightshade Clan is coming here, Alpha Brian Peltz himself is arriving for urgent pack business."
"The monster who slaughters without mercy?" the other maid gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. "Why would Alpha Arthur invite such a creature into our home?"
My blood ran completely cold at the mention of his name, a dangerous spark of hatred flaring up in my soul. Brian Peltz was a dominating, ruthless leader with a dark reputation that terrified the entire region, but to me, he was something much worse.
I firmly believed with every fiber of my being that Brian Peltz was the cold-blooded monster who had murdered my beloved older brother, Captain Kaelen, years ago on the northern borders. My father had spent his final years swearing vengeance against that man, and now the killer was walking right into the Silvermane Palace.
"He arrives at dusk," Alpha Arthur's voice cut through the air as he walked down the corridor toward the main hall, speaking to his Beta. "Make sure the guards are positioned properly, I want no incidents while the Nightshade Alpha is on our territory."
"Understood, Alpha, the main courtyard is secure," the Beta replied.
I knew I could not control my burning anger if I saw his face, I knew I had to get away from the palace grounds immediately to avoid my brother's supposed killer. I dropped the washcloth, slipped quietly through the shadows of the back hallway, and hurried down toward the lower training grounds where the old underground passages led out of the estate.
The air grew thick, dark, and damp as I entered the narrow servant's corridor, my heart drumming a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I picked up my pace, running past the stone arches toward the heavy iron exit gates that led to the outer forest, desperate to escape the suffocating presence arriving at the front gates.
My boot suddenly caught against a thin, metallic wire stretched across the floor, a sharp clicking sound echoing through the darkness.
A loud, metallic crash boomed above me as a heavy iron gate slammed down into the stone grooves, locking the exit completely shut and trapping me inside the dark corridor. I lunged forward, grabbing the thick iron bars, shaking them with all my strength, but they did not budge an inch. I spun around, my eyes widening in absolute terror as a heavy, slow, predatory step echoed right behind me.
