Brian’s POV
My words cut through the freezing air of the corridor, leaving her frozen as I dragged her away from the Silvermane Palace and forced her into the black carriage bound for our northern territory. The journey was dead silent, but the thick, suffocating tension inside the carriage grew heavier with every mile that passed.
When the carriage finally pulled through the iron gates of the Nightshade Fortress, I stepped out onto the rugged stone courtyard and looked up at the dark, heavily fortified castle. This place was an isolated stronghold built to survive endless wars, yet the greatest threat to my leadership was now walking right behind me. I turned around to watch Mollie step down from the carriage, her chin still lifted high, her eyes scanning the sharp spikes and black stone walls with a mixture of raw defiance and deep exhaustion.
A deep, painful torment twisted inside my chest as the cosmic mate bond pulsed violently between us, pulling my senses toward her like a magnetic force. I absolutely hated this bond, I loathed the fact that the moon goddess had bound my soul to a fragile human girl from a treacherous pack lineage[cite: 1, 2]. My duty was to secure my clan and protect my ailing mother, who lay weak and bedridden in the royal chambers because of what our elders believed was a lethal human curse running through the territory. Bringing this girl into the heart of my kingdom felt like opening the gates to a deadly plague, but political necessity demanded I keep her alive and claim her as my Luna to maintain absolute control over my restless court.
"Welcome to your new cage, little wolf," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy silence of the courtyard as I gestured toward the massive iron doors of the fortress.
"This isn't a cage, Brian, it's just a bigger target," Mollie spat back, her voice dripping with venom as she marched past me without waiting for an escort, her practical training boots clicking sharply against the gravel.
The next afternoon, I brought her out to the strict martial training grounds at the back of the fortress, determined to break her stubborn pride and see what she was truly made of. I assigned three of my largest battlefield warriors to spar with her, ordering them not to hold back their supernatural speed or strength.
"Hit her harder," I commanded from the wooden viewing platform, my arms crossed tightly over my chest as I watched a heavy warrior knock her to the dirt with a brutal sweep of his arm.
Mollie rolled across the rough gravel, coughing violently as the wind was knocked out of her lungs. She did not cry out, she did not beg for mercy, instead pushing herself up on her bleeding hands and wiping the sweat from her forehead with a fierce, unbreakable glare. She grabbed her wooden training staff, dodged the next heavy strike with incredible athletic conditioning, and drove the end of the weapon straight into the warrior's ribs, sending the large wolf stumbling backward.
Watching her fight filled me with a frustrating, dangerous spark of attraction that mixed horribly with my deep anger. She was entirely human, yet she carried the spirit of a wild predator, refusing to bow to my authority or give the hostile court the satisfaction of seeing her break.
"That is enough for today," I called out, stepping down from the platform as the sun began to dip below the jagged mountains.
The warriors bowed their heads and left the field, leaving the two of us alone under the darkening sky. Mollie stood her ground, her breathing heavy, her practical gear covered in dirt and blood as she glared at me.
"Are you trying to kill me, Alpha?" she asked, her voice tight with exhaustion.
"I am preparing you to survive, Mollie," I walked closer, my shadow falling completely over her slender frame as I looked down at her. "My people view you as a dangerous parasite, a human curse that threatens our lineage, if you cannot defend yourself, the court will tear you to pieces inside these walls."
"I don't need your preparation, and I don't need your protection," she hissed, turning on her heel and marching back toward the fortress doors, leaving the scent of cedar and rain lingering in the air.
I watched her disappear into the castle, my jaw clenched so hard that my teeth began to ache. As I turned to follow her inside, a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the shadow of the stone archway, his arms crossed over his chest.
It was my brother, the high-ranking prince of our clan, and his face was twisted in absolute disgust.
"How long do you intend to keep this human pet inside our palace, Brian?" my brother asked, his voice booming down the empty corridor as he stepped directly into my path. "The court is already whispering mutiny, our mother grows weaker by the day, and you bring the daughter of our ancient enemies into the royal house."
"She is my fated mate, brother, the cosmic bond left me no choice," I growled, my alpha aura flaring slightly to remind him of my rank.
"The bond is a curse, it is a weakness that will destroy everything our family has built," my brother stepped closer, his eyes flashing with a dangerous determination as he lowered his voice to a harsh whisper. "If you do not remove her from this throne, the council will take matters into their own hands, I will not let a human parasite bring down the Nightshade lineage."
"Touch her, and I will personally rip your throat out," I warned, my voice dropping into a low, lethal vibration that made the stone floor tremble beneath our feet.
My brother scoffed, turning around and disappearing into the darkness of the eastern corridor, leaving the heavy weight of his threat hanging in the air.
Late that night, I sat alone in my private study, staring at the glowing embers in the hearth while the rest of the fortress slept. The silence of the castle was absolute, until a sudden, sharp vibration pulsed through the air, causing the blue security runes carved into the stone walls to flare with a bright, warning light.
I stood up instantly, my muscles tightening as the magical fortress security wards alerted my mind that a cloaked intruder had successfully bypassed the outer guards and entered the Luna's private chambers.
My heart hammered against my ribs with an unfamiliar, terrifying panic as I lunged toward the door, my hand flying to the hilt of my silver blade, ready to sprint across the castle to save my mate.
Before I could even take a single step into the hallway, a deafening explosion rocks the eastern wing of the castle.
