-Enigmia-
My head was spinning, a whirl of emotions taking over, I could not even ask any questions. I was too shocked at that moment to take in anymore. A 'boy' found me, he saved me. That same boy took me away from his own village to hand me to Jessica as his own people wanted to execute me. He saved me again. Why did he keep on saving me? Quiet! I shout inwardly, these voices are going to drive me insane. Belle is a huntress. She said she was sent by a hunter to train me. 'A hunter'. Can it be that same boy? Why does he keep protecting me? I grabbed the side of my head and shouted out loud, “Ahhhh,” rocking my body backward and forward.
Jessica burst through the door. "Enigmia, what’s wrong?" "Talk to me please," Tears streaming down my face. I tangled my fingers through my hair. "I can’t take it anymore, the voices please stop the voices." I begged.
-Jessica-
I shook my head and stared at her. "What voices, Enigmia, tell me about the voices?" I demanded as I saw her clutching her body, "It hurts," she cried out, and then it snapped. She was more than a witch. "Don’t fight it, come with me," I pleaded, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the front door. She could barely walk. I asked her to sit on the ground, and she fell down rolling in agony. I never swore but f**k. I did not know much about shifting. I fell down to the floor with her and started begging, "Don’t fight the pain, let it release Enigmia," Whatever the voices were, they needed to shift, and she was fighting them. "Release. Relax your body." "Let them take control," I pleaded. They wanted to shift. "Baby, listen to me," I pleaded fearfully. She will hurt herself if she doesn’t let go, and "Happy Birthday!" Her head snapped at me in confusion, making her body relax slightly, so I kept talking. "Yes baby, we never knew, but now we know you need to shift. It is your eighteenth birthday today. I don’t know what they are, but I love them already and so should you. You can always trust them, they will never hurt you. She kept staring at me, shouting and crying…"
-Enigmia-
I did not have time to fight with Jessica and did what she said. I was in agony lying on the floor, she fell down lying close to me, begging me to let the pain take control, to release it. I could not understand what she was going on about. Then she went full on mad, telling me Happy Birthday, that I should trust the voices, that they wouldn’t hurt me as if she was the one suffering at the moment. She said she never knew my birthday, but now she knows, I could not make out what on earth was going on in her head. Then I felt it, every bone in my body was cracking, it was unbearable to a point I wanted to pass out. Trust Jessica, let go, let go, let go. I kept on repeating and suddenly the pain was gone. She looked at me with a big grin on her face. Well done girl, I do not know your name, but Enigmia will tell me later, you need to hunt and go show Enigmia who you are. There is a river flowing into the ocean close by and don’t come back home late…
-Enigmia-
This was odd. I saw everything but controlled nothing. Was I possessed? Oh No!, why would I do that? I watched in horror, as I started eating my prey. I must admit it tasted delicious, then bottom lip pulled thinking about this poor little creature. I am a monster. My eyes welled up with tears, but a sudden splash pulled me out of it. "Enigmia, will you listen to me now?"
"What, who are you? Why did you take my body? Stop chuckling. I don’t find this funny," I shouted.
"Look, Enigmia, in the water, look at your reflection, I’m your wolf, Akeelah." I stared at the water for a long time, your fur, it’s gold, that’s not normal, I said, but kept staring. She was beautiful. If you allow it, I will show you your true form, but nobody may ever know the truth. When the time is right we can reveal ourselves. Till then, this will be our secret.
“And if I tell someone,” I challenged Akeelah, or should I say to myself. "Then we'll be hunted." What, we’ll be hunted, so they will kill us just because we are whatever you want to show me. Oh, no, they will most definitely hunt us, but nobody is killing us soon. "We will have very bad and hard times, but dying is definitely not on my list." I could not help but chuckle at that. OK, but are you going to hurt me again? "No Enigma, only the first shift is unbearable, you will get used to it the more you do it, you should be fine now."
"Show me." I felt the pain but not nearly as bad as earlier. I’m back, I’m me again, I say, somewhat amused. I went over to the river to make sure it was me, but jumped back with a shocked face when the creature stared back at me."Stop laughing, what have you done to me."
"This is our true form. We are half human, half wolf, but I will tell you at a later stage what we are called, you’re not ready." I squinted my eyes and pouted my lips, "Who are you to tell me I'm not ready?" Well, I’m one quarter of you and even though I don't get along with the others that well, I can most definity guarantee they will agree with me."
"OTHERS?"
"Yes, Enigmia, you are part witch, part human, part wolf and the other part you will meet soon, so I will keep her information to myself for now." "You most definitely are going to have your hands full dealing with her. She causes a lot of trouble, you know...."
Change me back to myself, I demanded, “Sure, but you do know you will be naked?”
"What?"
"Please, can we just go for a run like a wolf? Just for a short while, I know you struggle to accept us, but I was stuck there for two years. Let me just feel the ground beneath my paws a bit. Sit back and enjoy nature, and don’t ever lie again. You loved our snack." She had a mouthful to say,
"I did not mind the snack. It was delicious, it was the way you killed it that was…"
"That was what?" You are aware that I am a wolf. I don’t play with a bow and arrows.
“Fine,” but not too far out.
"No worries, I would not like anyone to know about us. Gold is an odd color for a wolf, but there is more to us than you know. Oh, Enigmia, forgive Jess, she really loves you, she is afraid you will leave her. She did save us by raising us, you know."
I just kept quiet watching how she ran around. In a way, it calmed me down a lot, everything felt and looked so different through her eyes. Once we got home, I saw a table placed outside with a nightgown and paper on top. I opened the paper reading, “Enigmia, hope you enjoyed your run, Love Jess,” and an involuntary tear slipped down my face.
“Thank you Akeelah.”
