Lyra's POV
"If I accept wardship," I said slowly, "I would stay here? At the palace?"
"Yes," Zander confirmed. "You'd have your own rooms in the east wing, near Aurora's suite. Not isolated, but with privacy when you want it."
"And school?"
"You could continue at Moonlight Academy if you wish," Eric said. "Though with enhanced security. Or tutors could be arranged here if you prefer."
I nodded, considering. "And my father?"
"Your father would maintain paternal rights," Zander explained. "But the crown would assume responsibility for your safety, education, and shifter training. He could visit whenever he wished, of course."
"And Claudia would lose all legal claim to me," I concluded, unable to keep the satisfaction from my voice.
"Precisely," Eric confirmed with a slight smile. "Though I suspect she won't give up easily, wardship would remove her primary leverage."
"She never loved me," I said quietly, the admission less painful than I'd expected. "I was just a reminder of my mother that she wanted to erase. My appearance, my heritage - everything about me that connected to the woman my father loved before her."
Neither twin contradicted me or offered placating denials, which I appreciated. Instead, Zander leaned forward slightly.
"Sometimes the family we're born or placed into isn't the family we truly belong with," he said gently. "Finding your real pack isn't betrayal, Lyra. It's survival."
His words struck deep, addressing fears I hadn't even fully articulated to myself. The fear that leaving Claudia's control would somehow be disloyal to my father, to the life I'd known.
"It's a lot to process," I admitted, running my fingers along the cool stone bench.
"You don't have to decide this minute," Eric assured me. "Though before tomorrow morning would be ideal, given Claudia's legal maneuvering."
I nodded, then asked the question that had been lingering beneath all the others. "If I say no to wardship... what happens? Would I be sent back to Claudia?"
The twins exchanged another look, and I could see them struggling between diplomatic comfort and honest assessment.
"Legally, it's complicated," Zander finally said. "Your father has primary custody, but Claudia's petition claims he's unfit. Without royal intervention, the courts would have to evaluate those claims."
"Which means potential exposure of your abilities," Eric added grimly. "And risk of the court siding with Claudia if your father's belief in your shifting abilities is framed as delusion."
"A trap," I concluded bitterly. "Either reveal what I am to people who wouldn't understand, or let Claudia win by convincing them my father is unstable."
"A well-constructed trap," Zander agreed. "She's been planning this contingency for some time, I suspect."
I rose from the bench, needing to move as I processed everything. Walking to the stone railing, I gazed out over the royal gardens, spotting Aurora playing with what appeared to be a small fox in a distant clearing. No, not a fox—a wolf pup. Her form, I realized. Stella.
"She shifts so easily," I murmured, watching the young princess bound through the grass in wolf form. "Without fear or hesitation."
Eric had moved to stand beside me, following my gaze. "She's never been taught to fear that part of herself. For Aurora, shifting is as natural as breathing or laughing."
"I want that," I admitted, the words escaping before I could consider them. "That freedom. To not be afraid of what I am."
"It could be yours," Zander said quietly, joining us at the railing. "Not instantly. Years of fear and hiding leave marks that take time to heal. But eventually."
I turned to face them both, these princes who had upended my carefully controlled life and offered something I'd never dared hope for: acceptance.
"I'm not agreeing because of the connection between us," I said firmly. "Or because I feel pressured. But because I want to understand who I am without hiding anymore. Without being ashamed of what makes me different."
Their expressions shifted from concern to cautious hope. "Does that mean...?" Eric began.
"I'll accept the wardship," I confirmed, the decision feeling right despite the speed with which events were unfolding. "But I have conditions."
"Name them," Zander said immediately.
"I continue school at Moonlight Academy," I stated. "I need some normalcy, some connection to the life I've known."
"Agreed," he nodded. "Though with enhanced security."
"My father has unrestricted visiting rights, and I can see him whenever I want," I continued.
"Of course," Eric assured me. "He's welcome at court anytime."
"And most importantly," I said, meeting their gazes directly, "I need honesty. No more withholding information because you think you're protecting me. I need the truth about what's happening, even when it's difficult."
The twins exchanged glances, then Zander spoke for both of them. "You have our word. No more secrets."
"One last thing," I added. "This doesn't automatically make us... whatever this connection suggests. I need time to figure out who I am before I can consider what that might mean."
"Absolutely," Eric agreed quickly. "The connection exists, but what we do about it is entirely up to you. There's no timeline, no expectation."
I nodded, a strange mixture of fear and relief washing through me. I was choosing to trust these two young men I barely knew, to accept protection from a royal family I hadn't even been aware of days ago. Yet somehow, it felt less constraining than the life I'd been living under Claudia's watchful eye.
*Right choice,* Luna affirmed within my mind. *Our pack.*
*Maybe,* I conceded silently. *We'll see.*
"What happens now?" I asked aloud.
"Now we inform our parents of your decision," Zander explained. "The formal wardship papers will need to be prepared and signed this evening."
"A small ceremony will make it official," Eric added. "Nothing elaborate, just family and essential witnesses."
"Will Montgomery try to stop it?" I asked, remembering the calculating look in his eyes during the audience.
"He'll likely attempt to delay it," Zander acknowledged. "But with your clear consent and the ancient covenant as precedent, he has little legal ground to stand on."
"And Claudia?"
"Will be formally notified once the wardship is established," Eric said with evident satisfaction. "At which point her petition becomes irrelevant."
I took a deep breath, trying to process the magnitude of what I was doing. For years, my life had been defined by careful navigation of Claudia's rules and expectations. Now I was stepping into something entirely unknown.
"I should call my dad," I said. "He should hear this from me, not from royal messengers."
"Of course," Zander agreed. "You can use the private line in the east study. Complete privacy."
As we walked back toward the palace, I felt Luna's presence strengthening within me, her satisfaction at our decision evident in the warm hum of her consciousness against mine. Whatever came next would be challenging—Claudia and Montgomery weren't likely to give up easily—but for the first time in years, I wasn't facing threats alone.
---
My father arrived at the palace two hours later, his face a mixture of concern and hope as I met him in one of the smaller receiving rooms. He'd aged visibly in the days since confronting Claudia, new lines etched around his eyes and mouth.
"Lyra," he said, pulling me into a tight hug. "Are you sure about this? It's happening so fast."
I returned his embrace, surprised by how natural it felt after years of careful distance. "I'm sure, Dad. It's the right choice, both practically and... instinctively."
He nodded, releasing me to study my face. "Luna agrees?"
The casual acknowledgment of my wolf still felt strange coming from him. For years, we'd spoken of Luna, but never of my other abilities. I'd kept those completely secret from everyone in my family.
"She does," I confirmed. "She's been... more present since the ceremony. More vocal."
"And what about..." he hesitated, glancing toward the door where Eric and Zander had diplomatically excused themselves to give us privacy.
"The connection?" I asked directly, earning a slightly uncomfortable nod from my father. "It's there. But it doesn't control my decisions, Dad. I'm accepting wardship for protection and to learn about my heritage, not because of any... romantic considerations."
His relief was evident. "You're still so young, Lyra. Barely seventeen. I don't want you feeling pressured into relationships just because of wolf instincts or royal expectations."
"I won't be," I assured him. "Both Eric and Zander have been very clear that the connection creates potential, not obligation. And honestly, after years of Claudia's control, I'm not exactly eager to jump into any situation where my choices aren't entirely my own."
My father winced at the mention of his wife. "I'm so sorry, Lyra. I should have seen what she was doing. Should have protected you better."
"You didn't know," I said, the forgiveness easier to offer than I'd expected. "She manipulated both of us."
"Still, I was your father. I should have—"
"Dad," I interrupted gently. "We can't change the past. But we can move forward differently. That's what this wardship represents to me. A fresh start where I don't have to hide or pretend."
He nodded slowly, his eyes bright with unshed tears. "Your mother would be proud of you. She always said you had her strength and my common sense. A combination that would serve you well when you discovered your heritage."
The mention of my mother sent a pang through my chest. "Did she know? About the Silvermoon connection to the royal family?"
"I don't think so," he replied thoughtfully. "She knew her abilities were special, passed down through her family line. But the full history seemed lost even to her. She died when you were so young."
"The king and queen have offered to help you locate any remaining records of your mother's lineage," my father continued. "Historical archives, family documents, anything that might help you understand your heritage better."
"They told me," I confirmed. "It's part of why the wardship makes sense. They have resources and knowledge I couldn't access otherwise."
My father's expression grew serious. "Claudia won't give up easily, Lyra. She's already consulted with expensive lawyers about fighting the wardship."
"Commander Hayes mentioned that," I acknowledged. "But once the wardship is formalized tonight, her legal options narrow significantly."
"Legally, perhaps," he cautioned. "But Claudia rarely limits herself to legal methods when she's determined."
The warning sent a chill through me, though I tried not to show it. "The palace has security. And I'll be careful."
"See that you are," he said firmly. "I couldn't bear to lose you now, just as you're finally free to be yourself."
A knock at the door signaled the arrival of the royal counsel with the wardship documents. The next hour passed in a blur of legal explanations and signatures, my father adding his formal consent as my current guardian, though his involvement was technically optional given the ancient covenant cited in the document's preamble.
By early evening, we moved to the small throne room where King William and Queen Evelyn waited with Eric, Zander, and Aurora. Commander Hayes and several royal guards stood at attention along the walls, while the royal counsel prepared to read the formal declaration.
"Are you nervous?" Aurora whispered, sidling up beside me in a dress that matched her name, all swirling purples and pinks. "Don't be. It's just words and papers. The important part is that you're one of us now."
Her simple confidence made me smile despite the butterflies in my stomach. "I'm a little nervous," I admitted. "It's a big change."
"Good changes are still scary sometimes," she said with surprising wisdom. "Like when I first shifted into Stella. I was super scared, but also super excited."
"Exactly like that," I agreed, touched by her insight.
The formal ceremony took less than twenty minutes—a reading of the wardship declaration, my verbal confirmation of consent, signatures from the king and queen as my new legal guardians, and finally, a brief pronouncement officially welcoming me under royal protection.
"Lady Lyra Silvermoon," the herald announced, using my mother's family name rather than Stone for the first time. "Ward of the Crown, under protection of King William and Queen Evelyn by ancient covenant and mutual consent."
As the small gathering applauded politely, I caught sight of Eric and Zander watching me with expressions I couldn't quite decipher—relief mixed with something deeper, something that made my heart beat a little faster despite my determination to maintain emotional distance.
*Pack now,* Luna hummed happily within my mind. *Safe.*
*Let's hope so,* I replied silently.
The formal proceedings complete, the atmosphere relaxed into something more celebratory. Aurora immediately grabbed my hand, chattering about how we were "practically sisters now" and all the things she wanted to show me in the palace. My father was deep in conversation with the king, while the queen approached me with a warm smile.
"How are you feeling, Lyra?" she asked kindly.
"Overwhelmed," I admitted. "But in a good way, I think."
"That's understandable," she assured me. "This is a significant change, one that would be daunting for anyone, let alone someone your age."
I appreciated her straightforward acknowledgment rather than platitudes. "Will notification be sent to Claudia tonight?"
"Yes," the queen confirmed. "Commander Hayes has arranged for formal documents to be delivered to her at the Montgomery estate where she's currently staying."
My eyebrows rose at this confirmation of what we'd suspected. "She's still with them? Even after Montgomery's audience today?"
"Indeed," the queen said grimly. "Which suggests continued coordination between them, despite today's setback."
Before I could respond, Aurora tugged insistently at my hand. "Come see your rooms! I helped pick out EVERYTHING!"
With an apologetic smile to the queen, I allowed myself to be pulled along by the enthusiastic princess, secretly grateful for the distraction from heavier thoughts. Eric and Zander fell into step behind us, their presence both reassuring and slightly unnerving as I adjusted to my new reality.
The east wing corridor was bright and airy, with tall windows overlooking the gardens. Aurora stopped before an ornately carved door, bouncing with barely contained excitement.
"These are your rooms!" she announced. "Right across from mine!" She pointed to another door across the hall decorated with what appeared to be hand-painted stars and moons. "So we can have MIDNIGHT ADVENTURES!"
"With permission and proper security," Zander amended diplomatically, earning an eye roll from his sister.
"You're no fun," Aurora informed him before turning back to me. "Ready to see?"
At my nod, she flung the door open with dramatic flair, revealing a spacious sitting room decorated in shades of blue and silver. Large windows filled the space with golden evening light, while comfortable furniture arranged around a small fireplace created an inviting atmosphere.
"It's beautiful," I breathed, stepping inside.
"The bedroom's through there," Aurora pointed to another door. "And there's a study, and a HUGE bathroom with a tub you could swim in, and a private balcony! AND—" she lowered her voice to a dramatic whisper, "—a secret door that connects to the old servants' passages! But I'm not supposed to know about that."
Eric laughed. "Aurora knows about every secret passage in the palace. It's pointless trying to keep them from her."
"For security purposes," I clarified, "where does the secret door lead?"
"Just to the main corridor," Zander explained. "It was designed as a private exit for royal family members in earlier times. Now it's mainly unused, though regularly inspected by security."
I nodded, mentally mapping escape routes—a habit developed under Claudia's unpredictable moods. "This is all... amazing. Thank you."
"Do you like the colors?" Aurora asked anxiously. "Mom said blue and silver for your eyes and hair, but I added purple because it's my favorite and you're my friend now."
Looking more carefully, I noticed purple accents throughout the room—a throw pillow here, a vase there. "It's perfect," I assured her. "I love purple too."
Her face lit up. "I KNEW IT! We're definitely sisters now."
The declaration was so earnest, so free of the calculation I'd grown accustomed to from Claudia, that it made my throat tight with unexpected emotion.
"Aurora," Zander said gently, "perhaps we should let Lyra settle in? It's been a long day."
The young princess pouted briefly before nodding. "Okay, but tomorrow we're having BREAKFAST TOGETHER. In the garden! With pancakes!"
"Sounds wonderful," I agreed, finding myself genuinely looking forward to it.
Aurora hugged me tightly before she left. "Welcome to the family," she whispered, then pulled away and skipped out, presumably to her own room across the hall.
An awkward silence fell between me and the twins.
"Thank you," I said finally. "For all of this. For giving me a choice despite the urgency."
"We meant what we said on the terrace," Eric replied seriously. "Your choices remain your own, Lyra. The wardship changes your legal status, not your autonomy."
"And we'll help you navigate court life," Zander added. "It can be... complex at times."
I nodded, suddenly exhausted as the events of the day caught up with me. "I think I need some time alone to process everything."
"Of course," they responded in unison, then exchanged amused glances at the synchronicity.
"If you need anything, just press here," Zander indicated a small panel near the door. "It connects directly to palace staff."
"And for emergencies," Eric added, "this one," pointing to a red button partially concealed within the decorative wall panel, "alerts security immediately."
I raised an eyebrow. "Are emergencies common at the palace?"
"Not common," Zander assured me. "But we prefer preparation to reaction."
"A philosophy Claudia would actually approve of," I observed dryly, "though for very different reasons."
After they left, I explored my new rooms more thoroughly. The bedroom was spacious yet cozy, with a four-poster bed and more windows overlooking the gardens. The bathroom indeed featured a tub large enough to swim in, while the study contained empty bookshelves waiting to be filled with my choices.
It was all beautiful, comfortable, and utterly foreign. I sat on the window seat in the bedroom, watching darkness fall over the palace grounds, trying to process the monumental changes that had occurred in such a short time.
Just days ago, I'd been hiding my abilities from everyone, navigating Claudia's moods and restrictions, convinced I was some kind of genetic anomaly best kept secret. Now I was a royal ward, my heritage acknowledged and celebrated, with twin princes apparently connected to me through an ancient bond I was only beginning to understand.
*Home now,* Luna insisted, her presence warm and satisfied within me.
*Maybe,* I replied cautiously. *But we need to be smart about this. Claudia and Montgomery won't give up easily.*
As if summoned by my thoughts, a soft knock sounded at my door. Opening it, I found Commander Hayes standing at attention in the corridor.
"Lady Lyra," he greeted me formally. "I apologize for the interruption, but I thought you should know that the wardship notification has been delivered to Mrs. Rutherford-Stone."
"How did she take it?" I asked, though I could imagine Claudia's reaction well enough.
Hayes's expression remained professionally neutral. "She expressed... dissatisfaction with the development."
A diplomatic understatement if ever I'd heard one. "Thank you for letting me know, Commander."
He nodded, then hesitated slightly. "Also, Lady Lyra, I wanted to assure you that security measures have been enhanced throughout the east wing. Two guards are stationed at all times in the corridor, and the grounds beneath your windows are regularly patrolled."
The implication was clear—they expected Claudia to attempt something. "You think she'll try to reach me," I stated rather than asked.
"We believe it's prudent to prepare for various scenarios," he replied carefully. "Your safety is our priority."
"I appreciate that," I said sincerely. "And I'll be careful."
After Hayes departed, I returned to the window seat, more unsettled than I wanted to admit. For years, I'd lived under Claudia's thumb, carefully navigating her rules and expectations. Now I was beyond her legal reach, but perhaps not beyond her determination.
*She resents what we represent,* Luna observed. *A reminder of the woman she could never replace.*
*And now she's losing even that control,* I acknowledged silently. *We're beyond her reach here.*
I thought of Vincent Montgomery's assessing gaze during the audience, the way he'd looked at me as if calculating my value. Of Lord Montgomery's smooth words hiding obvious ambition. Of Claudia's years of making me feel ashamed of my appearance and heritage.
Then I thought of Aurora's unguarded acceptance. Of the queen's straightforward kindness. Of my father's relief at seeing me finally acknowledged for who I really was. Of Eric's directness and Zander's careful consideration as they tried to give me real choices despite the urgency of the situation.
For better or worse, I'd made my choice. I was now officially Lady Lyra Silvermoon, ward of the crown, somehow connected to twin princes in ways I didn't fully understand, and apparent heir to a shapeshifting legacy I was only beginning to comprehend.
Whatever came next—Claudia's retaliation, Montgomery's machinations, or the complications of life at court—I would face it with Luna's strength supporting me and, perhaps for the first time, people around me who saw me for what I truly was and didn't want to hide or suppress it.
It wasn't freedom, exactly. But it was a step closer than I'd ever been before.
*We are not alone now,* Luna reminded me as I prepared for my first night in my new rooms.
*No,* I agreed as I drifted toward sleep. *For better or worse, we're not alone anymore.*
And for tonight at least, that felt like enough.
