Chapter 5

"Do you always make such an entrance?" The words left my mouth before I could stop them, my voice sharp, but there was no hiding the irritation bubbling inside me. Alessandro stood in the doorway of the study, his dark eyes sweeping over the room with an air of ownership that unsettled me more than I cared to admit. He didn’t say anything at first. He just stood there, his broad frame blocking the light from the hallway. A moment passed, and I thought—hoped—he might leave me alone for once, but his deep voice shattered that illusion. "Are you still angry?" he asked, his words low and deliberate, as though he expected them to cut through me. I shifted in my seat, trying to hide the tremor in my hands by gripping the armrests of the chair. "What do you think?" He raised an eyebrow, taking a step forward into the room. "It’s your choice, you know." I didn’t flinch this time, didn’t move an inch. "What do you want from me, Ricci?" I asked, pushing myself upright. "I’m here. I’m stuck. But you keep playing these games, keeping me in the dark. Why?" Alessandro’s lips curved slightly, though it wasn’t a smile. It was more like an acknowledgment—of something unspoken between us, something dangerous. "Because you don’t understand, Valeria. And until you do, you’re not going anywhere." His gaze locked on mine, cold and unwavering. But there was something else there, something that made my stomach twist—a flicker of something deeper, more personal. Or maybe I was imagining it. "You think this is all just a game for you?" I asked, my voice rising despite my attempts to remain composed. "You think I’m just going to bend to your will, like everyone else in your life?" "Not everyone bends," he replied, his tone turning almost thoughtful. "But they always learn to survive." I clenched my fists at my sides, struggling to keep my composure. "I’m not like them. I’m not someone you can control." "Then prove it," Alessandro said, his eyes narrowing. "Prove it by staying here and helping me, Valeria. Prove it by accepting the reality of this world. You want to fight it? Fine. But there are consequences. You can fight, or you can learn how to survive." I didn’t speak at first. His words—those simple, final words—cut through me more than I cared to admit. He was right, in a way. My life was no longer my own. It hadn’t been for a long time, not since my father had entangled me in his web of power and corruption. And now here I was, thrown into another web—this one even more dangerous, more suffocating. "What happens if I don’t want to survive your world?" I shot back, trying to make my voice steady, but it wavered despite myself. "Then you die." The words were calm, cold, chilling. And for a moment, I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t move. Alessandro was still standing in front of me, his expression unreadable, but the weight of his words pressed down on me like a vice. He took a step closer, and I felt the shift in the room. It was subtle—his presence, the way he moved, the way his gaze never left me—but it made everything feel ten times more intense. "You’ll learn, Valeria. Eventually. This is my world. My rules. You’re not the first person I’ve taken, and you won’t be the last. But you’re the first one who’s fought back. And that... that makes you interesting." I stood up, my heart racing, my breath coming faster now. "I’m not interested in being your experiment," I snapped. Alessandro didn’t seem offended. Instead, he looked... intrigued. His lips twitched, but he quickly masked it with that stone-cold expression. "No. You’re not an experiment. You’re something far more valuable." "Valuable?" I repeated, my voice sharp with disbelief. "To who? To you? To my father?" He didn’t answer at first. He just studied me, his gaze intense and calculating. "To me," he finally said, the words hanging in the air like a threat. I wanted to laugh, to shout, to walk out of the room and never look back. But there was no walking away now. Not anymore. I was caught in this—trapped by my father’s mistakes, and now, by Alessandro’s game. "You think you can just keep me here and... what? Make me into one of your loyal soldiers? A tool to use?" Alessandro’s gaze flickered, his lips curling slightly, but there was no amusement behind it. "No. But you’ll learn. And when you do, you’ll understand why you’re here." I shook my head, unable to wrap my mind around the truth of it. He was right. I didn’t understand. I didn’t know why he had brought me here, why I was the one he needed, but something in his words—the way he spoke about survival, about power—made it feel like I was too deep into his world already to turn back. "I won’t be your pawn, Ricci," I said, the words bitter in my mouth, but I knew they were true. I couldn’t—wouldn’t—let him control me. Even if I was stuck here, trapped in his mansion, surrounded by his dark world. I wouldn’t let him win. "Then you’ll be a much more interesting challenge," he said with a sharp smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "I look forward to seeing how long you last, Valeria." The tension in the room shifted, thickening. I didn’t know what was coming next, but I could feel it in my bones. This wasn’t just about survival anymore. It was about something deeper. Something far more dangerous. But I wasn’t going down without a fight.
