CHAPTER 2
~TYLER POINT OF VIEW~
“How long until we get there?” She ask, checking the time. “An hour or two?”
“Tyler Holt better not beat us .Finn drive faster.”
I don’t answer. I just stare at her, blinking, refusing to believe it’s Lucy Knowles.
Owen Brooks shadow—actually his best friend. But I call her his shadow because she’s always behind him and she's also his personal manager who's now graduated to being his new girlfriend.
It's all over the gossip school blogs, I saw it last night. Owen kissed her at the charity fair last night in front of his ex and the whole school. But then I wonder how that's going right now… .
Around eight in the morning I saw Owen come pick up his ex. I knew that was a rebound. My eyes narrow down to Lucy, the nerdy sports journalist that I’ve had a crush on since freshman year and for a moment I contemplate telling her but I choose to mind my business. She won't believe it anyways.
“Are there any shortcuts?” she presses.“Or something like a shorter route we could take and get there before Tyler?"
I stare at the oversized hoodie swallowing her whole body. At the big glasses that hide her perfect eyebrows.
I watch her furious expression as she continues. “I pray Tyler is somewhere with his w****s. Lord, please…he should be somewhere doing some stupid shit.”
“Right, Finn?”
She narrows her gaze at me, and I quickly adjust my ski mask.
“Tyler Holt is probably in bed with some girls, right?”
I give a firm nod so she’ll stop looking at me.
Once she turns her gaze outside the window, I breathe.
I steal another quick glance at her. I still can’t believe Lucy Knowles is in my car.
It feels like a dream. Like a dream come true.
I’ve always hoped one day she’d stop chasing that coward Owen and look my way.
She deserves better than that asshole who can’t make a simple decision for himself.
It’s clear she doesn’t know it’s me— Tyler Holt. Her best friend’s biggest rival.
She thinks I’m Finn.
I look at her again, wondering if she’ll jump out the window once I take off this ski mask and reveal myself.
Since freshman year, I’ve been stalking her socials. I’ve also been liking her pictures on my main account, even though she trash-talks me in every article she releases.
I also stop disappearing after the games.
I started staying back once she became an intern at Ice Media and started interviewing after the game but she always avoids me. She never wants to interview me.
Well, that’s not far-fetched. She’s loyal to Owen.
After the games, I join the group photo in hopes I end up in her personal page on i********: but she always blurs me out.
I even tried texting her a couple of times. On i********:, she never accepted my message request. On t****k, she never replied. And on Twitter, she blocked me after I texted.
“Finn,” her sweet voice slices through the air, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Do you have water here?”
I pause, staring like an i***t. My brain does Olympic-level gymnastics trying to figure out what to say.
I shake my head. “No. No water here.”
I can’t give her my bottle, everything I own is customized with my name on it. If I handed it to her, she’d know it’s me.
She hisses and turns her face back toward the window.
My body suddenly feels hot. My heart is racing like it’s doing back-and-forth flips.
I’ve never felt this way before. Not with any girl. I’ve been with a lot of them.
Nerds. Bookworms. Princess type. Jocks. Artsy. Tomboys. Even indie girls. I’ve never felt like my heart is about to explode, like I’m about to melt in her presence.
A few minutes later, she whines up the window and brings her laptop out of her bag.
She scrolls to an empty document and starts to type. All I need is a glance to know she’s already writing a biased write-up about my game tomorrow.
A game I haven’t played and she hasn't watched yet.
My lips curl into a smile.I know her schedule. She’ll write a crappy recap about me and praise Owen.
Afterwards, she’ll rally her friends to drop comments as witnesses who attended the game. Then she’ll stay in the comments just to delete anything that tries to defend me.
I’ve been stalking her for too long. I know all these things and more of her private life than I should.
Well, all of that is about to change. I’ll make sure of it.
My phone suddenly starts to ring, cutting out the cool R&B playing in the background.
I glance at the Bluetooth screen. “Mrs Holt.” It’s my mum.
I freeze instantly, Every muscle in my body locks up.
Shit… s**t… s**t.
Out of all the people who could call right now, why her?
The ringtone continues echoing through the car.
Beside me, Lucy immediately perks up. Her head snaps toward me so fast I’m surprised she doesn’t get whiplash.
“Is it Owen?” she asks hopefully.
My heart nearly explodes. “W-what?” I manage.
“Is it Owen?” She sits up straighter leaning in. “Is it him calling?”
Panic slams into me. Before she can even adjust her glasses, I lean over and stab the decline button so hard I nearly c***k the screen.
“No, it’s not him.”
She frowns, then nods.” Oh okay.”
I grip the steering wheel tighter. My breathing comes out rushed. I keep staring at the road, letting the silence between us stretch.
Minutes later, the cloud cover suddenly thickens. I look at the time,it’s past seven.
Hopefully it doesn’t rain until we get there.
Next minute, I take a quick curve swerving down but my car jerks.
Then it lurches a few times before coming to a halt.
I turn the ignition back on, but it just jerks and dies again.
Lucy turns toward me, raising an eyebrow.
I look away at once, not because I’m scared of her scrutiny. It’s just something about how she stares. She might stare too much and realize I'm not Finn.
I glance down at the gas gauge and my heart drops straight into my chest.
It’s sitting at an E.- Empty.
Dammit!
I was too busy being excited about seeing Lucy, that I stopped at the gas station but I never bought gas.
