Daniel stopped a few steps away, his chest rising and falling as he struggled to catch his breath.
The rain poured heavily, soaking all three of them.
“Amara…” he called again, his voice breaking. “Please don’t do this.”
Amara looked at him without saying a word.
Only a few hours ago, she would have run into his arms without a second thought.
Now, all she could remember was the humiliation.
The whispers.
The mocking stares.
The pain of being abandoned on what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.
“You’ve said enough, Daniel,” she replied quietly.
“No.” He shook his head. “I know I hurt you, but marrying a stranger isn’t the answer.”
Damian stood beside her, his expression cold and unreadable.
“I’m not a stranger,” he said calmly. “I’m the man willing to give her the respect you couldn’t.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“This is between me and Amara.”
Damian didn’t move an inch.
“The moment you walked away from her at the altar, you lost the right to say that.”
Silence settled between them.
The sound of the rain was the only thing anyone could hear.
Daniel took another step toward Amara.
“I’m begging you. Give me one chance to explain.”
Amara searched his face.
She saw regret.
She saw fear.
But she no longer saw the man she had trusted with her heart.
“You had your chance,” she whispered.
“You chose someone else.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with panic.
“It was a mistake.”
“It was a choice.”
Her words hit him harder than a slap.
For the first time, Daniel realized he had truly lost her.
Damian slowly extended his hand toward Amara.
“I’m leaving,” he said. “You can stay here with the man who broke your heart… or you can walk away with me and never look back.”
Amara stared at his outstretched hand.
Her heart pounded violently.
One path led back to the past.
The other led into an uncertain future.
Taking a deep breath, she made her decision.
Slowly…
She placed her hand in Damian’s.
Daniel froze.
“No…” he whispered.
Amara didn’t look back.
She walked away with Damian, leaving Daniel standing alone in the rain.
As Damian opened the passenger door of his luxury car, he looked at her with those unreadable eyes.
“You’ve just changed both our lives, Amara.”
She didn’t know what lay ahead.
But deep inside, she knew one thing…
There was no turning back.
Daniel stopped a few steps away, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. Rain streamed down his face, mixing with the tears he refused to admit were there.
“Amara…” he called again, his voice cracking. “Please don’t do this.”
She looked at him silently.
Only hours ago, hearing him call her name like that would have made her heart race.
Now, it only reminded her of the pain he had caused.
“You left me,” she said softly.
Daniel swallowed hard.
“I know.”
“You abandoned me at the altar.”
“I can explain.”
Amara let out a bitter laugh.
“Explain? In front of everyone? After humiliating me in the worst possible way?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I made the biggest mistake of my life.”
Damian, who had been watching quietly, finally spoke.
“Mistake?”
His deep voice cut through the rain like a knife.
“No.”
He stepped closer to Amara.
“It wasn’t a mistake.”
“It was a choice.”
Daniel looked at him angrily.
“This doesn’t concern you.”
Damian’s expression remained calm.
“The moment you left her standing alone at the altar, you made it my concern.”
Daniel clenched his fists.
“You don’t even know her.”
Damian looked at Amara before answering.
“I know enough.”
“I know she deserved better than what you gave her today.”
Those words struck Amara harder than she expected.
For the first time that day…
Someone had chosen to stand beside her instead of walking away.
Daniel turned back to her desperately.
“Amara… please. I still love you.”
She stared into his eyes for several seconds.
She searched for the man she had fallen in love with.
But all she could see was the man who had broken her heart.
“If you loved me,” she whispered, “you would never have left me.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I was scared.”
“You weren’t scared.”
“You were selfish.”
Silence filled the air.
The rain continued to fall.
Damian slowly extended his hand toward her.
“Come with me.”
Amara looked at his hand.
Then at Daniel.
One man represented her painful past.
The other…
An unknown future.
She closed her eyes.
Her mother’s words echoed in her heart.
“Never stay where you are not valued.”
Slowly…
She placed her trembling hand into Damian’s.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“No…”
Amara didn’t look back.
She couldn’t.
If she did…
She might lose the courage to leave forever.
Damian gently led her toward the black luxury car waiting by the roadside.
The driver quickly opened the rear door.
As Amara got inside, she took one final glance through the rain-covered window.
Daniel was still standing there.
Alone.
Broken.
Watching her disappear.
The car pulled away.
Neither of them spoke for several minutes.
The silence inside the expensive car felt almost as heavy as the storm outside.
Finally, Damian broke it.
“You’ve been crying.”
Amara quickly wiped her cheeks.
“I’m fine.”
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“You’re pretending to be.”
For the first time that day…
Someone had seen through her mask.
Absolutely!
“For the first time that day… Someone had seen through her mask.”
Amara turned her face toward the rain-streaked window.
“I don’t want your pity.”
Damian’s lips curved into the faintest smile.
“Good.”
She frowned.
“I don’t pity weak people, Miss Amara.”
His answer caught her off guard.
“I admire people who survive.”
For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.
The silence returned until the car slowly pulled into the driveway of a magnificent mansion.
Amara stared in disbelief.
The estate looked more like a palace than a home. Tall iron gates opened automatically, revealing beautiful gardens, sparkling fountains, and a grand marble staircase leading to an enormous mansion.
“Where are we?” she whispered.
“My home,” Damian replied simply.
The car came to a stop.
A butler hurried over and opened the door.
“Welcome home, Mr. Damian.”
Damian stepped out first before offering his hand to Amara.
She hesitated.
Then she accepted it.
The servants standing at the entrance exchanged curious glances but bowed respectfully.
Damian noticed.
“This is Miss Amara,” he announced. “From today onward, she is to be treated with the same respect you give me.”
Every servant bowed at once.
“Welcome, Miss Amara.”
She had never experienced anything like it.
Only hours earlier, she had been the woman everyone pitied.
Now…
Everyone was treating her like royalty.
Inside, the mansion was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, while elegant paintings decorated the walls.
Amara felt completely out of place.
“I don’t belong here,” she murmured.
Damian looked at her.
“Neither did I.”
She blinked.
“What do you mean?”
A shadow crossed his face.
“I wasn’t born into this life.”
Before she could ask another question, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
“I have to take this.”
He walked toward his office, leaving Amara standing alone.
A young housekeeper approached her with a warm smile.
“Miss Amara, may I show you to your room?”
“My… room?”
“Yes.”
She followed the housekeeper upstairs.
When the bedroom door opened, Amara froze.
The room was larger than the apartment she had shared with Daniel.
A king-sized bed sat in the center, surrounded by elegant furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
“This can’t be real,” she whispered.
The housekeeper smiled.
“Everything here is yours to use.”
After she left, Amara slowly walked to the mirror.
The woman staring back at her looked exhausted.
Her makeup had washed away.
Her wedding dress was stained with rain.
Her heart still ached.
She gently touched the engagement ring Daniel had once given her.
Tears filled her eyes.
Without another thought…
She slipped the ring from her finger.
She placed it on the bedside table.
“Goodbye,” she whispered.
At that exact moment, there was a knock on the door.
Damian stood outside.
“I’ve arranged dinner,” he said.
She shook her head.
“I’m not hungry.”
“You need to eat.”
“I’m tired.”
He studied her face for a long moment before speaking again.
“Tomorrow, we’ll announce our engagement.”
Amara’s heart skipped.
“So soon?”
“The media already knows you left with me.”
He paused.
“If we don’t control the story… someone else will.”
She realized he was right.
Taking a deep breath, she nodded.
“Okay.”
As Damian turned to leave, he stopped at the doorway.
“One more thing.”
She looked up.
“Our marriage may begin as an agreement…”
His dark eyes met hers.
“…but I never break my promises.”
The door closed quietly behind him.
Amara sat on the edge of the bed, her mind racing.
She had walked away from the man she loved…
And into the life of a man she barely knew.
Little did she know…
The biggest secret Damian was hiding would change everything.
