The Web of Shadows

The first thing Selene felt was fear. Not her own. Someone else's. It was strange. Like standing in a room filled with whispers she couldn't quite understand. Fragments of emotions drifted through her consciousness. Fear. Hatred. Jealousy. Desperation. Then suddenly— Her eyes opened. The royal chambers came into focus. Morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows. The storm had passed. But the heaviness in the room remained. For several seconds, she simply lay there. Staring at the ceiling. Trying to separate reality from memory. The golden eyes. The voice. The symbol. The silver-haired woman. None of it felt like a dream. Every image still lingered vividly in her mind. As though she had remembered something she was never meant to know. A movement near the fireplace drew her attention. Kael. He sat in a chair beside the bed. Still wearing the same clothes from the previous night. His dark hair was slightly disheveled. His silver eyes shadowed with exhaustion. The realization startled her. He hadn't slept. Not once. He had remained there all night. Watching over her. Something warm stirred painfully inside her chest. For years, she had faced every illness, every nightmare, every moment of fear alone. Yet somehow... This man refused to leave. The moment Kael noticed her awake, he stood. Relief flashed across his face so quickly she almost missed it. Then his expression returned to its usual calm. "How do you feel?" Selene hesitated. "Tired." It wasn't a lie. Her body felt heavy. Her mind even heavier. Kael nodded. "The physician said you need rest." Selene almost laughed. Rest. As if rest could solve whatever was happening to her. Before she could respond, another voice interrupted. "She's awake." Commander Rowan entered the room carrying several documents. His expression was grim. The atmosphere changed instantly. Something was wrong. Again. Selene had a feeling she was becoming the center of far too many problems. Rowan approached slowly. "Good morning." She managed a small smile. The commander returned it. But it didn't reach his eyes. That worried her. Rowan was rarely serious. If he looked troubled... The situation was bad. Very bad. Kael noticed it too. "What happened?" Rowan placed the documents on the desk. "The council is demanding an emergency assembly." Kael sighed. Of course they were. The nobles wouldn't stay quiet for long. "They've already started." Selene frowned. "Started what?" Rowan exchanged a glance with Kael. Neither looked pleased. Finally, Rowan answered. "Rumors." A knot formed in Selene's stomach. Rumors had destroyed her life before. She knew exactly how dangerous they could be. "What kind of rumors?" Silence. Then Rowan slid a newspaper toward her. Selene's eyes widened. The front page contained a sketch. Her sketch. Beneath it was a headline. THE CURSED MATE OF THE ALPHA KING Her hands trembled slightly. Another headline followed. ANCIENT PROPHECY RETURNS TO THREATEN THE KINGDOM Below that: IS THE FUTURE LUNA A DANGER TO SILVERFANG? The words felt like knives. Familiar knives. The same accusations. The same fear. The same hatred. Different faces. Same cruelty. Selene lowered the paper. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Kael's voice broke the silence. "Those responsible will be dealt with." Selene looked at him. His jaw was clenched. His eyes cold. Dangerously cold. But strangely... She wasn't thinking about the rumors anymore. She was thinking about him. Because every time someone attacked her... He became angry. Not because it embarrassed him. Not because it threatened his reputation. But because it hurt her. The realization was unsettling. And comforting. At the same time. Elsewhere in Blackthorn Palace... Lady Vanessa Laurent smiled. A slow. Satisfied smile. The newspaper rested neatly upon her lap. Exactly as planned. The first seed had been planted. Fear. Fear was easy to cultivate. Especially among nobles. People feared what they didn't understand. And Selene represented everything they feared. A servant. A prophecy. An unknown power. Perfect. The door to her private chamber opened. A hooded figure entered quietly. Vanessa's smile disappeared immediately. Unlike everyone else, she felt uneasy around this man. Very uneasy. "You've done well," the stranger said. His voice was smooth. Too smooth. Like silk wrapped around a blade. Vanessa folded her arms. "The kingdom already fears her." "They feared her before." The hooded figure moved toward the window. "Now they must hate her." A chill ran through Vanessa. Something about him felt wrong. Not dangerous. Beyond dangerous. Ancient. As though darkness itself had learned how to wear human skin. She cleared her throat. "What happens next?" The stranger looked out toward the distant palace towers. Toward the royal wing. Toward Selene. "Chaos." His smile deepened. "And chaos is always the beginning." Meanwhile... Someone else was watching. Not Vanessa. Not the mysterious stranger. Someone hidden much closer. Inside the palace itself. A servant girl hurried through the corridors carrying linens. Ordinary. Forgettable. Invisible. Exactly how she preferred it. Nobody paid attention to servants. That made spying remarkably easy. The girl entered a storage room. Locked the door. Then immediately removed a small crystal from her pocket. The crystal glowed faintly. A communication stone. Rare. Expensive. Illegal. The moment it activated, a voice echoed inside the room. "Report." The servant lowered her head. "The girl awakened." Silence followed. Then— "And the king?" The servant hesitated. "He is becoming attached." A pause. A dangerous pause. Then the voice laughed softly. The sound sent chills down her spine. "Excellent." The crystal dimmed. The connection ended. The servant swallowed hard. She suddenly felt guilty. For the first time. Because after observing Selene these past few days... She wasn't sure the girl deserved what was coming. Unfortunately. It was already too late. That afternoon, the Royal Council assembled. Every major noble family attended. Every Alpha Lord. Every influential figure in the kingdom. The atmosphere was hostile. The moment Kael entered the chamber with Selene beside him, conversations died instantly. Eyes followed them. Judging. Measuring. Calculating. Selene felt it immediately. She had spent years being ignored. Now she couldn't escape attention. The council hall felt like a battlefield. Except nobody carried weapons. Their smiles were the weapons. Their words. Their schemes. Their ambitions. At the far end of the room sat Lord Cedric Thornvale. One of the wealthiest nobles in the kingdom. His sharp eyes lingered on Selene longer than necessary. That alone made Kael dislike him. Beside Cedric sat Lady Vanessa. Perfectly composed. Perfectly elegant. Perfectly dangerous. But neither of them concerned Kael most. No. His attention remained fixed on another man. Lord Victor Ashbourne. Head of the Eastern Territories. A powerful noble. Respected. Influential. And recently... Very suspicious. Kael had spent years learning one important lesson. The loudest enemies rarely posed the greatest threat. The quiet ones did. The meeting began. Almost immediately, accusations followed. Questions. Doubts. Concerns. All directed at Selene. Each disguised as concern for the kingdom. But beneath every polite sentence lurked the same question. Can she be trusted? Selene listened quietly. Her hands clenched beneath the table. Part of her wanted to disappear. To run. To escape. The old Selene would have. The servant. The frightened girl. But something had changed. Maybe because Kael sat beside her. Maybe because she was tired of running. Maybe because she finally realized she had done nothing wrong. Whatever the reason... She stayed. Then suddenly— A voice echoed through the hall. "Perhaps we're asking the wrong question." Everyone turned. Lord Victor Ashbourne slowly stood. His expression was unreadable. "What should we be asking?" someone said. Victor's eyes settled on Selene. Then on Kael. Then back to Selene. A strange smile touched his lips. "The question isn't what she is." Silence filled the room. Victor folded his hands behind his back. "The question is..." His gaze darkened. "...who has been protecting her all these years?" The room froze. Selene felt her heart stop. Because somehow... Deep inside... She knew he was right. Someone had been hiding the truth. Someone had erased records. Someone had concealed her existence. Someone powerful. And for the first time... The possibility emerged that the greatest threat wasn't outside the palace. It was already inside. Watching. Waiting. And perhaps... Sitting among them.
