Emily and Simile ate in silence. Both caught up in their own thoughts. They sat on opposite sides of the seat, as far from each other as they could get. Emily hated the distance. Knew she was responsible, but also that Simile was being stubborn about the situation. She wished she could say she’d take it back, do things differently, but Emily knew that would be a lie. She’d do the same thing, and partly because of the reason she gave Simile, but also because she knew, if she’d let Simile follow her, Simile would not have let her deal on her own, the way Jane had. Her throat closed at the thought of the woman who’d lost her life. All the lives that were lost because a man thought he was better, stronger. Because he was greedy and cared only for himself. She put the sandwich in her hand back
