Simile shifted to her human form, gave Andy the order to check on their people, then walked over to where Mya was hunched over Amber and Sam. Sam held Amber in her arms, cradling Amber to her chest. Tears were running down Sam’s face.
“Is she?” Simile stopped, not sure how to ask.
“She’s fine, just exhausted, for a second I’d thought, but no, she’s fine. Your guys?”
“Andy is checking, I’m going in after Emily.” She turned and felt a hand on her arm.
“I’m with you,” Mya said. “Sam?”
“Go,” Sam said her focus on Amber.
Mya and Simile took three steps and stopped as the door to the big building swung open. Simile felt relief as Emily came walking out. Her smile faded as she realized that Emily carried someone. The agonizing scream that tore from the woman beside her broke her heart.
