CHAPTER 2
RYAN’S POV
I had the bulge to get out of here. The annoyance has the memories that sprung up, seeing her interlocked her hands to his possessively. “What the heck am I even doing here, why would she invite me for her birthday party, to spite me, huh?”. I gruffed at my thoughts and sipped the red wine in my hand and my hand relaxed on the back couch.
Maybe coming here is to prove a point to her- To prove that I have moved on.
Sarah has always been that pretty right from high school. Boys filtered themselves around her.
I had a real crush on her and I felt a deep connection with her in high school and when we were friends. “Where we truly are friends, I doubt, Pheww”.
“I want to surprise Sarah on her birthday”. Dan had told me at my office as he flagged to the small box with the flashy rings.
“Hmm”. I chuckled and slightly glanced up and averted back to the document on my table. Obviously pretending like I don't care.
“I will be busy, I'm a busy man you should know”. My voice is barely audible as it is soft and determined not to reveal the bitterness and envy churning inside me.
“C’mon man”. He pulled the seat beside him and settled down.
“Are you still on this?”. He nods his head.
I lift my shoulders in a weak shrug.
“like years ago and by the way she was the one that is inviting you to her birthday party but the engagement is a surprise and you are my that needs to be there, for my engagement “. He explained.
“So you are saying it is compulsory to be there and besides I am not still holding against what she did, it was normal for her to do what she did to me”. I replied.
“Then prove it by coming”. His eyes dared to mine and I got what that meant.
I sighed defeated.
“Okay fine, I will be there, because you asked me to”.
He smiled at me like he won the bet on me.
“That great then, I will be expecting you”. I nodded at him and then he stood up and left the office.
I scoffed at my defeat and knew it was a trap to witness my loss that will again crush my eagle.
“Hey Ryan”. Sarah walked elegantly at my seat spot.
“You finally came”. She swung her hair and tossed over her shoulder revealing the oval and blushed face. A lopsided grin on her face.
I cleared my throat and took another glass of red wine.
“Yes, because Dan asked me to be here”. I hesitate and raise my shoulders.
“I'm happy you are here, Ryan”. She fluttered her lashes and had her hands on my laps and a surge of adrenaline in my veins.
I straighten up, sweeping my eyes at the dancing crowd who are distracted by the loud music. Conscious enough not to see a sight of Dan to get caught up and think otherwise. A subtle rasp escaped my throat.
“Thank you”. I allowed a thin and a quiet smile curved my lips.
I stared at her, my eyes devouring at her half- cleavage that had her red dress covering only just a tiny bit of her chest and then stared back to her full lips covered with thick lipstick.
“Happy Birthday Sarah”. I say, my eyes held to her charming bright eyes.
“Thank you”. She replied, her lips curled up slightly. It felt like she cast a spell on me for elegant beauty.
I couldn't let my eyes just let go. She is still seated beside me, swirling the crimson red wine. Her gaze drifted over the crowd as if searching for something. And there he was.
“Hey pretty Angel”. She stood up, her flowing red gown sweeping the ground and spread her arms around him and perked him to his cheeks.
“Gosh, she's damn pretty, a sunlight in human form.
I can see you and my buddy are going a long”.
She turned back and looked at me.
“Yeah”. She shrugged and smiled.
“Hey man”. He stretches his hands to me for a handshake.
“I'm glad you came”. His cat brows shoot up,almost touching the line of his foreheads and a mischievous grin displayed in his face. He came closer to me with his hands still on mine as he bent lower and whispered to my ear.
“I want to surprise her at the stage, please come forward and witness this moment with me”. His voice hushly pleading.
This is such a sensitive request and a trap to my soul. To witness someone I had had feelings for. Damn it, this is a big trap, to set my heart into fury.
I forced down the irritating tight knot on my throat and nodded.
“Sure”.
He nods back and slightly smiles and then turns back to reach her as he folds hers and their finger locked in a tender knot, when their eyes meet, I get a deep crack in me like I'd lost. It felt like a battle against him.
I felt that familiar furry curling around my heart and it burning under my skin as their figures slowly left from the crowded space.
“I fucky need to get out of here before it gets worse”. I grunt under my breath. I really need to excuse myself from here, before getting another round of heartbreak and repeating the same mistake I made years ago. Dan has no idea about that silly mistake I made- it damn hurt.
I just hope I don't get to see her shadow around me.
I stood up and am about to leave the hell here. But I could hear a cheering clap from the crowd as I was about to leave the club. Cameras flashed to the stage.
“Say yes, say yes”. The crowd echoes in unison.
A cold of emptiness settled in my chest as I watched him drop to one knee and slip the ring to her trembling finger. Each promise he confessed to her echoes a heartbeat.
“I'm done here, I can't stand this moment”.
It is clarring that I can't have her, not now, not anytime soon. I'm feeling suffocated standing here. My mum isn't right when she said Love comes naturally, just choose the kind of love that feels like home to yourself. To me, I felt like loving Sarah is like a peaceful home to my heart, not knowing that loving Sarah was a destruction to my inner soul.
I try to keep my demeanor neutral and left. If he asks me if I left, I will simply say something urgent came up. I entered inside my Volkswagen and then I inhaled deeply and the air left my breath.
It over Ryan, I can never have her, she was never yours”. My deep thoughts muttered.
