CHAPTER 5 ELENA'S POV “Why haven't you gone to see your father?” My mum stared at me squarely as the bread was already mid-air close to my mouth. “Mum, what do you mean?” I swallowed awkwardly as I took a slight bite of bread. “Elena.” Mum dropped the small teacup onto the plate and brushed off her hand as she kept the bread. I glanced over at Celina, who was engrossed with the television, clapping along to the Ben 10 song displayed on the screen. “What I mean is that you haven't visited your father since he has been in the hospital. Even while you returned to the house, you've been so hostile towards your father, and now he needs us the most. You totally act like he doesn't exist. Why is that?” She shrugged, her brows etched with concern. I deeply exhaled, carefully staring at Celina, who was more focused on the TV, and then glanced back at my mum. “Mum, I have nothing against Dad. I haven't had time for myself; I'm just trying to focus on getting a job first.” “Or are you running away from seeing your father?” Her hand was cupped under her chin, and I was silent, my eyes drifting from hers. “I know what your father did was very foolish, and he is the reason we are in this mess, but you can't abandon him like that knowing fully well how things would have been normal if not for his mistake.” My mum's voice tended to trail off octavely high. “Mum, please talk softly. Celina is here.” I rolled my eyes at Celina and tipped my head back to her. Her head was already buried on the table, and her hands were folded on her forehead. She looked like someone who had a lot to vent out, but she was still silent for a second and looked back at me. “Look, forget whatever your father has done, just try…” “I'm glad you already admit what my father did years ago.” My voice broke as it began to tremble. “The costly mistake that is making our lives hard and miserable. And after that, what happened?” I spoke softly, but my voice was filled with pain. “Dad kept running away from his responsibility. It happened, and then what?” I shrugged my shoulders and watched her sit silently. “He is the same reason I left the house years ago. Or should I remind you what exactly happened that year?” My voice was wobbling, and I was about to cry. “Look, that was a mistake that he regretted doing. Your father has been so devastated after that.” If only she knew what that one deadly mistake had ruined me, maybe we wouldn't even have this conversation. “Whatever your father did shouldn’t it be forgivable?” She placed her hand on mine, and I was concerned by her downcast eyes. “I will think about it, but I have to go upstairs.” I let go of her hand and began to ascend the stairs. She couldn't stop me. I slammed my door and threw myself onto the bed, my head puffing into the pillow as I groaned loudly. “Hey.” I felt a tap on my leg that woke me out of my sleep. “Are you okay?” Pamela asked as she settled beside me on the sofa and adjusted to allow me to stretch out. “Yes, dear, just tired,” I replied and cleared my throat. She dropped her bag on the bed, and I noticed her sexy, revealing, and skimping leaf-green gown paired with block heels, and her hair beautifully curled. “Going out?” “Yeah, for a birthday bash, and I thought I could invite you.” “Nah, the last time I went, it put me in a mess, so I'm not taking another chance.” I replied. “Okay, I have good news for you.” She raised her brows excitedly, and a sardonic smile conveyed on her lips. “What is it?” I smiled back at her with bright eyes. “Well, I told my boss about you needing a job.” “Tell me, what did you tell him?” I looked at her with curious eyes. She tilted her chin and stared back at me as a tiny smile settled on her face. “Well, everything that he needs to know about you, so just get your C.V. ready, because tomorrow you will go to the office for an interview.” I smiled at her and was about to swell up with tears. I threw an arm around her and hugged her. “You don't know what you've done for me; this is huge.” I said, still wrapped around her. “This is nothing. You are my friend, and I should be looking out for you. Besides, I will soon be leaving for California to further my education, and the only person that can replace me is just you.” I nodded in appreciation and wiped my tears away. All my financial worries had been settled, and now Celina wouldn't be taken away from me. “I need to tell you something.” She bit her lips like she was anxious. I raised a concerned brow at her, and my smile froze. “What is it?” My hand was placed on her shoulder. “It's about your boyfriend.” She slid her head to the side. “What happened to my boyfriend?” My eyes peered at her, perplexed and scared. “You know what.” She hurriedly stood up and grabbed her black handbag from the other side of the bed. “Just get ready for your interview tomorrow; I will call you after the party.” She rushed out and slammed the door behind her. “What just happened?” I muttered as I stood still and felt completely lost with every thought clouded in confusion.
