I shoved the journal back in my bag, ready to give up and try again tomorrow, when a soft tap-tap-tap caught my attention. A little woodpecker with a red spot on its head drummed against a nearby tree, and I watched it with a smile, then studied the way the sunlight dappled the leaves nearby. I’d always felt more connected to the moon, but the sun had its own kind of beauty. As the bird flew to another tree, I understood then that the sun gave life, that nothing in this forest would exist without its gentle light nurturing and providing for us.
