Why must this girl try me so? I think looking at Lauren. I almost smile as she is the spitting image of my mate, Tabitha. That does bring a smile, my mate, my beautiful, caring mate. She asked me to pick up Lauren because she was in trouble again. No doubt her attitude is the cause. I can only imagine what tonight will hold once she hears the news we must share. After many years, we finally have our hatchling, a dragon baby. Tabitha wanted to give Lauren time to adjust, but so far, all she does is reign chaos; that thought brings me back to the scene before me.
“Mind your words, Lauren.” “Or what?” she challenged. I hit the wall. “Care to find out?” I look over, and though I hear her heart racing, I see the sparks of magic playing at her fingertips. That instantly extinguishes the fire I have burning inside. I hate that I am the reason her magic burst free. Tabitha has forgiven me, but I may never forgive myself.
“The hatchling of Warrior Paiz had a fainting spell, Sir Kane.” The nurse mind links. “Your hatching’s magic has been floating along her skin since her friend passed out, and she’s refused to pull it back in.” My hatchling, I thought, yes, Lauren is my hatchling, though I am sure it would pain her to hear me refer to her as such. “I see. Thank you, nurse. I will handle it from here.” She bows and exits quickly. I look at the Paiz hatchling; she is quivering and looks sickly.
“Ruby?” “Yes, sir?” “Ruby, I’ve told you, you may call me Kane. Can you tell me what happened?” Ruby hesitates and looks at Lauren. Lauren nods, and Ruby does the same, so Lauren hands me a phone. I assume it is Ruby’s
because this isn’t the phone we purchased for her. “Just go to the messages and you’ll see.” Ruby’s voice quivers, and I am instantly on alert. I see the message is from her father, and as I read, I began to see red. “Kane! Kane!” I hear Lauren screaming my name. I see Ruby on the floor crying. “Pull back your aura.” I instantly pull back and help Ruby. “I apologize, little one; I didn’t realize what I was doing.” “Do you ever?” Lauren quips. “Zip it.” I snap, and thankfully, she closes her mouth. “How long has this been happening, Ruby?” “Since Mom.” She replied. Yes, her mother walked out on them around the time I found Tabitha. We never heard another word from her. She just vanished. “Come on, girls, Ruby, you’re coming home with us.” “But my father.” “I will handle your father, don’t worry come on.” Lauren smiled. “I am so happy you’re coming home with me.” I hope her happiness lasts after talking with her mother and me.
