Frank Brown did not raise his voice often, but when he did, it meant something had already broken beyond repair. Jeffery had pushed too far, and this time there would be no soft landing. Frank stood alone in the sitting room long after Canna left. The house felt heavier and quieter in a way that pressed on his chest. He picked up his phone and stared at the screen for a long moment then pressed a call. Jeffery answered on the third ring, his voice casual and careless like he had nothing to hide. “Dad.” “Come home,” Frank said without any greeting or warmth. “Now!!!.” The tone cut through the line. “Is something wrong?,” Jeffery asked, forcing a laugh. “You sound tense.” “Do not test me,” Frank replied. “Come home immediately.” The call ended before Jeffery could say another word.
