Chapter 23 Wednesday arrived quickly. I walked into the Rails alone. Bertie was parked outside in case I needed to leave on my own too. My breath caught in my throat as I surveyed the familiar, welcoming scene, filing away every detail—the velvet curtains I passed through, the high set timber tables, the low leather couches, the bookshelves in the corners, the green-topped pool tables, and the mannequin with a pineapple for a head next to the bar. I walked over to the front table and waved to a few familiar faces.
