THE NEXT AFTERNOON, I plugged the address into Bertie’s GPS. Darwin wasn’t big, but it was still unfamiliar. When I first learnt to drive, I used to study the route in the Melways before leaving the house. Even if I had someone in the car giving directions, I had to look it up myself before we left. I’d relied on Adam a couple of times to navigate, but I’d felt anxious not knowing where I was going. I loved this GPS. It was still technically someone giving me directions, but I could see the route mapped out when I entered the address, so I at least had a general idea of which direction to go.
