Ryan found out.
Not because I told him.
Because Ryan always knew.
He found me outside the library.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
“So.”
I stopped.
“So?”
“You chose him.”
I didn’t pretend.
“Yes.”
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t understand.”
“I know.”
“That’s the problem.”
I frowned.
“What?”
He stepped closer.
“I know you better than anyone.”
“You are my friend.”
His eyes darkened slightly.
“Is that all?”
The question made me uncomfortable.
“Ryan…”
He shook his head.
“No.”
A sad smile.
“I’ve always been there.”
“I know.”
“But he gets to walk in and change everything?”
I stepped back.
“That’s not what happened.”
“Isn’t it?”
His voice lowered.
“He doesn’t deserve you.”
I stared.
“And you do?”
Silence.
For a second…
He looked like he wanted to say yes.
That scared me.
Then he smiled.
“I’m just trying to protect you.”
The words felt familiar.
But coming from Ryan…
They felt different. Really, Really different.
