Chapter 3: Hidden Secrets

1671 Words
It was a Friday evening when Maya reluctantly agreed to meet Rohit Mehra, the man her parents had chosen for her. Her resistance had worn her down over the past week, and though she had no interest in marrying him, she went to the dinner as a gesture of respect to her family. Rohit was charming, if not slightly arrogant. He worked in real estate, overseeing his family’s vast property business. On the surface, he seemed like the perfect match—a successful, ambitious man from a respected family. But something about him felt off. Maya couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but his demeanor was polished in a way that made her uncomfortable, like he was hiding something. As the evening progressed, Maya asked polite questions about his work, but Rohit’s answers were vague, almost evasive. “It’s all standard business. Properties, developments, investments, pharmaceuticals… boring stuff, really,” he said, smiling casually, trying to move on from the topic. But Maya wasn’t convinced. Her instincts told her there was more going on beneath the surface. Later that night, when she returned home, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. Over the next few days, Maya tried to push the dinner out of her mind, focusing instead on her fashion projects and her growing feelings for Aditya. But curiosity gnawed at her, especially when her mother casually mentioned that Rohit’s business had grown “remarkably fast” in the past few years. Maya started doing some research on Rohit’s company, Mehra Properties, and pharmaceuticals business with the help of his father hoping to find out more. At first, everything seemed legitimate—glossy website, high-end real estate developments, well-documented projects. But then she stumbled upon a string of news articles from a few years ago about corruption allegations tied to one of his projects. The case had been closed without much attention, and Rohit’s name hadn’t come up directly, but several of his business associates had been implicated. Some illegal cases on his pharmaceuticals business which are closed without proper investigation and proper evidence are not submitted to court. Maya’s heart pounded as she continued to dig. She found small discrepancies in the property deals and anonymous accusations of money laundering linked to some of the investments his company handled. The more she uncovered, the more uneasy she became. She hesitated to tell anyone, especially Aditya. He had his own problems, and she didn’t want to burden him with her suspicions. Besides, she wasn’t sure what she had found was enough to go to the authorities. But Maya knew one thing for certain: Rohit was hiding something, and it wasn’t good. While Maya wrestled with her discovery, Aditya’s own life was spiraling. His father, Mr. Sharma, had intensified the pressure on him to prepare for the civil services exam. It felt like the walls were closing in around him. Every day brought new lectures from his father about stability, respectability, and the importance of securing a future. Aditya’s passion for his startup ideas, once burning brightly, had started to wane under the crushing weight of his father’s expectations. He spent countless nights staring at his business plan, wondering if it was all just a pipe dream. The energy that had once driven him now felt depleted, replaced by a sense of resignation. One evening, after another long argument with his father, Aditya found himself sitting alone in his room, staring blankly at the wall. The conversation had been the same as always—his father demanding that he focus on preparing for the exam, and Aditya resisting, only to end up feeling guilty for disappointing the man who had sacrificed so much for him. “You’re being selfish, Aditya,” his father had said, his voice heavy with frustration. “You think your dreams are more important than your family? A stable job will allow you to support us, to have a future. These startups? They fail all the time. You’re gambling with your life.” The words echoed in Aditya’s mind as he sat there, his heart heavy. Part of him wanted to give in, to follow the path his father had laid out for him. But the other part—the part that dreamed of creating something of his own—fought desperately to hold on. His relationship with Maya had become his only source of joy, but even that was beginning to feel strained. They still met regularly, but Aditya had noticed that Maya seemed distant, distracted. She was keeping something from him, and he wasn’t sure what. Every time he asked her if something was wrong, she brushed it off, saying she was just busy with her projects. Aditya wasn’t convinced, but he didn’t press her. He had his own battles to fight, and he didn’t want to burden Maya with his struggles. Maya couldn’t let go of her suspicions about Rohit. Her gut told her that there was more to his business than met the eye. Over the next few days, she continued to investigate, carefully gathering as much information as she could without paying attention to herself. Late one night, she found herself scrolling through social media, trying to piece together more of Rohit’s connections. That’s when she stumbled upon a photo from a party Rohit had attended six months ago. In the background of the photo, she recognized a man named Ajay Verma, a known fixer in the real estate world with ties to underground money laundering networks and he has conflicted with Maya’s friend family regarding some land issues. So, she wanted to know more about Ajay Verma. Maya’s heart raced. She had read about Verma before in some of the articles related to Rohit’s business dealings. It couldn’t be a coincidence that Rohit was associated with someone like him. Determined to get more proof, Maya decided to attend one of the upcoming events Rohit was hosting for his business associates. She knew it was risky—if Rohit or anyone else suspected that she was snooping, she could end up in serious trouble. But Maya felt like she had no choice. If she didn’t find out what was really going on, her family could unknowingly push her into an engagement with a man involved in criminal activities. The event was held at a swanky hotel downtown, the kind of place where luxury masked the darker undercurrents of power. Maya arrived, blending in with the crowd of well-dressed guests, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of Rohit. As she mingled, she overheard snippets of conversation that made her uneasy. Words like "offshore accounts”, and "hidden assets" floated through the air, spoken by men who seemed too polished to be discussing anything legal. Maya’s suspicions were confirmed when she saw Rohit in a hushed conversation with Ajay Verma, the fixer she had read about. Maya moved closer, pretending to browse the buffet, trying to catch snippets of their conversation. What she heard chilled her to the bone. “We need to move the money before the regulators catch on,” Rohit said, his voice low but urgent. “I’ve got someone on the inside, but it’s only a matter of time before they start looking deeper.” Verma nodded. “Keep it quiet. We can’t afford to lose this deal.” Maya’s blood ran cold. She had suspected that Rohit was involved in something illegal, but hearing it confirmed was terrifying. She had to get out of there before anyone noticed her. Maya slipped out of the hotel, her heart pounding as she made her way home. She didn’t know what to do next. Should she go to the authorities? Confront Rohit? Tell her parents? Every option seemed fraught with danger, but she knew she couldn’t stay silent. Maya’s discovery weighed heavily on her. The more she thought about it, the more anxious she became. She couldn’t bring herself to tell Aditya—not yet. He had enough on his plate with his family pressuring him, and she didn’t want to add to his stress. But keeping it from him was becoming harder every day. Aditya, meanwhile, was growing more frustrated by the mounting pressure from his father. His passion for his startup was slipping away, and he felt like he was losing himself in the process. One evening, after another argument with his father, Aditya called Maya, hoping to find some solace in her company. “Hey, can we meet?” he asked, his voice strained. Maya hesitated. She had been planning to confront Rohit the next day and wasn’t in the right headspace for a casual meet-up. But hearing the exhaustion in Aditya’s voice made her agree. They met at their usual spot—a quiet park away from the hustle of the city. Aditya looked worn down, and Maya’s heart ached for him. But she couldn’t bring herself to tell him about Rohit just yet. It felt too dangerous. “I’m so tired, Maya,” Aditya said, his voice low. “I’m tired of fighting my father, tired of feeling like I’m letting everyone down.” “You’re not letting anyone down,” Maya replied, placing her hand on his. “You’re trying to follow your dreams, and that’s not something to be ashamed of.” Aditya shook his head. “It feels like I’m failing. Every day, it gets harder to hold on to what I want. And I feel like I’m losing you too.” Maya’s chest tightened. She wanted to tell him everything, to let him in on the secret that had been eating away at her. But the words wouldn’t come. She didn’t want to put him in danger or make him worry more than he already was. “I’m here, Aditya,” she said softly. “I’m not going anywhere.” But even as she said it, Maya knew that their worlds were growing more complicated. She worried about their lives, ambitions and their family pressure on them.
