CHAPTER TEN: Russian Race Horse

Alex hated that answer. He had known far to many men and women who died. Then there were those assholes who wanted to blame them for it. They were out there defending said asshole's, right to be a f*****g asshole. Oh, but war is the soldier's fault. He wasn't going to wallow though. That was a snake pit he wasn't stepping in. So, he decided to change the subject. "I was wondering if you would like help moving. I could barrow my brother-in-law's truck if you need it." Vic responded with another honest to god smile. "Thank you, that would help out a lot. I'll cover the cost of gas. There are going to be things I need to drop at Helena long term care." He had a confused look on his face and asked "Why do you need to drop stuff there? I'm sorry that's not my business. I know you probably will anyway but you don't have to pay for gas." She could tell he was dying for an answer to his question. He always had this curious child like look in his eyes. Especially, when he couldn't think of a possible answer. What really got her was that he was actually trying to respect her limits. So, she threw him a bone and answered "My Grandma Rosalinda lives there. I visit her on Sunday's so she can b***h about me not being in church." she chuckled continuing"see we are getting to know each other better. I am definitely paying for gas. Now, Thank you for the tour but I need to get home and start packing." Alex smiled at her back as she walked out the door. Zach was right, he actually was learning to like her. It seemed she was learning to like him too. Even if she'd never admit it. He stood up, after she closed the door, walking to his bedroom. There was a small room off his. It was only accessible from his room. Which is why he hadn't added it to the tour. He didn't want her to be uncomfortable walking through his room. He had set the room up as a make shift design room. Planning to surprise Vic by building cribs and rocking chairs. Of course he would have to do research for the cribs. This would be the first time he'd built one. It was an odd feeling for him, wanting to surprise any woman. Let alone one that, until recently, he hated. Okay so apparently Vic had lost her mind. At least that was her thought process at that moment. She was in her car driving back to her apartment. Trying to figure out why she felt like she might actually like Alex. Didn't she hate him a month ago. He had almost done a complete three hundred and sixty degree turn. As far as his attitude toward her went anyway. 'What if it was all just an act?' she thought to herself. Vic parked in front of the gas station and turned off the car. She had to pee like a Russian race horse. She walked in asking for the bathroom. She was only four months pregnant so she wasn't really showing yet. The attendant pointed the way. So she headed straight there. The bathroom was actually clean. She went pee then washed her hands. She hated using those air dryers. They were so loud. On top of that they replaced the water with dust and dirt. They really were useless. When she was finished she stepped out of the bathroom. Walking toward the doors. Suddenly someone yelled stop, then she instantly heard a gun shot. She had no time to react she fell backward. Hitting the floor hard. She lifted her hand to check her head as she tried to get up off the floor. Her hand was already covered in blood. That's when Vic realized she had been shot. She didn't even hear the shooter running out the door. Then someone was talking to her but she couldn't hear them either. She placed her hands on her stomach instinctively. Then suddenly the world went dark. Twenty minutes later Maggie was returning from her break when a male nurse literally ran at her. "We need you in the E.R. NOW" he said almost out of breath. Maggie asked what was wrong then took off running when he said "Vic was shot" She was pacing in front of the nurses station trying to reach Alex. When Zach came running toward her. She was crying so hard that when Alex picked up Zach had to take the phone. Alex asked "Maggie what the hells wrong?" Zach was crying too but managed to say "It's Regan. She was shot." Then the call cut out.
