Alex had just finished another long shift at the hospital. He was sitting at a table in the lounge drinking coffee. When doctor Malechek walked in. "Hey, Suzette." He greeted her. She gave a tired smile then responded "Hello, how are you doing?"
Alex was trying to figure out his emotions. Something every man has hated doing. Since the beginning of time. Suzette noticed Alex was distracted asking "What's on your mind Alex?" He looked around noticing that they were alone. Then he asked "Can it stay between us?" She immediately agreed so he continued "I'm sure you've heard that Vic and I are married now." Suzette nodded waving her hand for him to continue. Alex sighed "Well when we got married it was for the children. Hell everyone knows we couldn't stand each other. Now though..." he trailed off. Not entirely sure what he was feeling.
Suzette could tell Alex was confused by the look on his face. She decided the best thing to do was just tell him a story. "You know my cousin Lisa and I were like peas in a pod growing up. When we both ended up at the same university. We were thrilled. There was this guy that was in a few of Lisa's class. One with me too. Anyway, they hated each other. Always bickering and fighting over nothing really. Well one spring break we planned a trip down to Florida. Not knowing that the guy, Greg, would end up at the same place as us. Anyway, long story short. You never know who you're meant for. Lisa and Greg have been married for go on fifteen years. They still argue but I haven't met a single couple that loved each other more." As she finished speaking she stood up smiling. Then with a nod of her head she left the lounge.
Leaving Alex to consider everything she had said. He realized that he was in love with Vic. She and the boys were the only focus he needed. Now he just needed to let Vic know. Even if she didn't love him. He stood up from his seat following Suzette out the door.
Thirty minutes later Alex arrived home. It was around two thirty in the morning. He knew Vic would be up soon with Frank. So he quietly made his way inside. As he locked the door. Alex heard a bedroom door open.
Vic was having trouble sleeping. She was excited to be going back to work soon. She was also obsessing over her feelings for Alex. As she climbed from the bed, making her way to Frank's bassinet, she heard the front door open. After gently picking Frank up she opened the bedroom door. Walking into the nursery she laid Frank on the changing table then began to change his diaper.
She heard the water running in the kitchen. So after changing Stevie too she took both boys with her. Once she was in the kitchen she saw Alex holding two bottles. He set both of them on the table. Then took Frank while she fed Stevie. Once they were both seated. Each feeding a baby. Alex said "I need to tell you something." Vic looked up before responding "Okay, but first how was work?" Alex wasn't surprised by her question. That was part of why he had fallen in love with her.
"It was a bit crazy but not to bad." he told her before asking "How has your day been?" She was so beautiful. Even with her hair in a messy bun. Wearing her, pink and white striped, Minnie mouse night gown that barely reached her knees.
Vic gave him a tired smile as she said "About the same." then she asked "What did you want to tell me?" Alex pulled the empty bottle from Frank's mouth. Then began burping him. He looked at Vic with so much love in his eyes saying "I need to tell you that I love you. It's alright that you don't love me. Vic I just had to let you know. I am in love with you."
Tears began to form in the corners of her eyes. Was he just saying that or does he actually mean it. She looked at him asking the first question to pop into her head. "Why?".
Alex wasn't prepared for that question. He had to say something though. So, he just started listing things. "You are the smartest woman I know. Stubborn as hell but smart as a tack. You're always asking how I'm doing. Even when I know your day was s**t. You always sit up, listening to me when I need to talk. The boys don't even have to cry before you know they need something. It doesn't hurt that you are absolutely the most gorgeous woman. That I've ever seen and the strongest." Then he asked "How could I not love you?"
Okay, now she was full on crying. In the kitchen of all places. Alex helped her stand so they could take the boys to the nursery. When she laid Stevie in the crib she looked over at Alex. Nibbling at her lip she said "I love you, too."
Alex started to tell her she didn't have to say that. When she put her hand up to stop him. "I have for a while. I just didn't think you loved me. I didn't think you even liked me." she told him. He walked over to the crib laying Frank next to Stevie. Then he wrapped his arms around her waist. Pulling her to him he said "Gorgeous, I am so in love with you it scares me." "Me too." she said.
Alex took her hand leading her out of the nursery. They stood outside his bedroom door as he asked "Will you sleep next to me tonight?" "Okay, but we're just sleeping." she told him with a grin.
