Chapter 29John sat in the dimly lit office waiting for Penny. Pictures of the Pope adorned one dark paneled wall, and various celebrities posed with Pastor Charles in a framed collage. Diplomas and letters from the Vatican were matted and hanging in gold-plated frames. A small bookshelf held bibles, religious books and a collection of binders. The chairs were uncomfortable. Without the incredible pictures, the office could have been anywhere. The battered desk held a large pile of weekly bulletins on one corner. A sliver of desert sunshine slipped under a small curtain-lined window, bathing an exquisite porcelain sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in vibrant rays of light.
