Vareks pov.
I dashed into the flames, ripping the binds that held Maya in place, wrapping my hands around her and taking her out before the scorching fire could consume the entire pyre.
Sounds of confusion echoed around me but I couldn't care about them, what I did care about was what Maya had said.
Or rather the name she had called.
“Auren,”
Auren, my shining light.
Maya was throwing a fit, desperate to get the smoke out of her lungs, her eyes hadn't healed but in its place appeared black orbs as dark as the night time. I shook her gently, trying to get her to wake up because I had only one question for her.
She stared at me or rather, it appeared as though she was staring at me, her dark long hair framed her features, her brows knitted in confusion, probably wondering why I had stopped the execution.
My breathing was heavy, I didn't know how to bring myself to question her but I wanted to, “How?”
Maya's brows knitted further.
How? Why? Where?
All the questions.
Or perhaps it had been a mistake and I might have just misheard.
I shook my head, it wasn't likely that I would have misheard considering I had a heightened sense of hearing, “why did you call out that name and how did you know of it,”
A strange look appeared on her features as though she didn't know what I was talking about which only irked me.
The name she called, it was the same name my mother always called me when I was little and no one knew about it except for her, so there was no way she would have known, unless….
“You know where my mother is, don't you?” My anger began to rise.
Sarah appeared behind me with questions but I didn't have time to respond to her as I needed answers myself.
Thought spiralled in my head, what if the crimson blood pack had captured some of the ashgroove members and among them was his mother.
My mother would have talked to her and that is the only way she would have heard of that name, it must have been.
“We can't kill her,”
“At least not yet,”
Norman's old frizzled voice, filled with amusement, came out, “Why the change of heart?”
I glanced up to look at her, not wanting to get into anything with her at the moment, “She might have some information considering she's from the crimson blood, we are already doomed for saving her, the least we can do is learn about our enemies before they attack us,”
It wasn't a lie, it wasn't the whole truth either and for some reason, I felt like Norman knew this as well.
Maya stored in my hands, her eyes had drooped probably from the amount of energy she had used, her body was warm from the fire.
I held her close before picking her up, bridal style, Sarah stared at me with a raised eyebrow which I ignored and walked past her, “Everyone get back to work.,”
“And someone should put out that fire,”
While I was leaving, with Sarah behind me, I didn't expect to bump into the other members of the ashgroove pack who had just arrived from their journey, and they had arrived with the supplies.
According to John, they shouldn't have arrived until a few days later.
“Alpha Varek,” Crane, our newly appointed Gamma, greeted the rest of the members and besides him is his trusted aide Jackson.
Sarah took the question right out of my mouth, “How are you guys so early? Even with the supplies,”
Apparently, according to Crane, they had taken a detour and had gotten here faster, “We did encounter some rogues but they were already dead by the time we arrived, I'm assuming you had something to do with it,”
My frown deepened, “How many of them did you see?” Maya stirred in my arms which halted the conversation. I didn't think it was the best time to speak about this considering she could still be a spy.
Crane's brows raised questioningly, as he gazed down at Maya before his eyes returned back to me, “Meet me later and we would discuss the details.
“Did we add a new member to the pack? It feels like we've missed a lot considering it had only been days since we were separated,” Jackson however didn't seem to take the hint as he questioned out of the blue.
His eyes however lingered suspiciously on the girl in my arms, which didn't sit quite well with me, “She's not a part of the pack,” and that's all I was going to say.
Something did seem to change in his eyes but right after it was gone, like it was never there. I wondered if he had taken a liking to her, she was quite a beauty, although her features were a bit distorted, but that didn't make a difference.
Jackson hummed, “Well I better get going, I would see to it that the supplies are used effectively,” he announced, smiling gently before walking away.
Crane bowed before following behind him.
I didn't linger and carried Maya into the pack house, found a room and placed her on the neatly dressed bed.
One thing I knew about my mother was, she would never go around telling people she didn't know about us, if my theory was correct then there's a possible chance that she was still alive and she had trusted Maya enough to tell her her secrets.
I didn't want to get my hopes up considering that it would also mean that she was held captive in the hands of one of the most ruthless alphas in the world.
We had little to no knowledge of them other than their strict rules and ruthless nature and how much they would kill to get whatever they wanted.
Sitting on the chair beside the bed, I couldn't help but stare at Maya's features, my brows furrowed in confusion.
Why would my mother trust you?
