CHAPTER THREE: THE FIRST MISSING SHIPMENT

1916 Words
The Moretti warehouse stood at the edge of the city, surrounded by high walls and heavy security gates. By eight in the morning, the place was already unusually quiet. Workers moved around the loading area, speaking in low voices as they waited for instructions. Several trucks remained parked in their assigned spaces, but one empty space near the main loading bay immediately caught everyone's attention. That was where the missing truck should have been. Instead, there was nothing. Isabella Moretti stepped out of the black SUV and looked around. She had spent most of the morning trying to convince herself that everything would eventually make sense. It hadn't. The messages. The photograph. Her father's warning. And now the missing shipment. She hadn't planned to come to the warehouse. In fact, she had promised her father she wouldn't get involved. But Isabella had never been good at ignoring unanswered questions. She closed the car door and walked toward the entrance. A security guard immediately approached. “Miss Moretti.” “Where is the warehouse manager?” “He's inside.” “Take me to him.” The guard hesitated. “Your father didn't say you were coming.” “I didn't ask whether he knew.” The guard quickly stepped aside. “Yes, ma'am.” Isabella entered the warehouse. The smell of cardboard, metal, and machinery filled the air. Rows of large storage containers stretched across the building, each marked with codes and numbers. At the far end, a group of employees stood around a desk. One man separated himself from the group when he saw Isabella. “Miss Moretti.” “Mr. Daniel.” The warehouse manager nodded nervously. “I wasn't expecting you.” “Neither was I.” She looked around. “Show me where the shipment was loaded.” Daniel immediately led her toward the loading area. “Everything was normal yesterday,” he explained. “The shipment arrived from the supplier in the afternoon. We checked the contents, verified the documents, and prepared the truck.” “Who supervised the loading?” “I did.” “Who else was here?” “Three warehouse workers, the security team, and the driver.” “What's the driver's name?” “Victor.” “Where is he?” Daniel looked down. “We haven't been able to reach him.” Isabella stopped walking. “Since when?” “Since last night.” “Did he ever arrive at the destination?” “We don't know.” She looked toward the empty loading space. “What exactly was in the shipment?” Daniel hesitated. “Business materials.” Isabella gave him a sharp look. “That's not an answer.” He swallowed. “It contained several high-value electronic components and equipment.” “How valuable?” “Very.” “How valuable, Daniel?” He looked uncomfortable. “Enough to cause a serious loss.” Isabella folded her arms. “Who knew what was inside?” “Only the people authorized to handle the shipment.” “Names.” Daniel gave her a list. Isabella studied it. “That's all?” “Yes.” She looked toward the security cameras positioned above the loading bay. “I want the footage.” Daniel nodded. “Of course.” They walked into the security room. A security officer pulled up the recording from the previous afternoon. The screen showed workers moving around the warehouse. At first, everything appeared normal. The truck arrived. Workers loaded the containers. The driver signed the documents. Then the truck left. Isabella leaned closer to the screen. “Stop.” The officer paused the recording. “What?” “Go back.” The footage rewound. Isabella watched carefully. The truck had entered the warehouse at 3:17 p.m. It left at 4:06 p.m. Nothing seemed unusual. “Fast-forward to when the truck leaves.” The officer did as she asked. Isabella watched the vehicle pass through the main gate. Then she noticed something. “Stop.” The footage froze. A dark SUV was parked across the road. Isabella's heart dropped. “Zoom in.” The officer tried. The image became blurry, but the vehicle was unmistakable. It was the same type of SUV shown in the photograph she had received. “Was that vehicle there before the truck left?” The officer checked the earlier footage. “No.” “Then when did it arrive?” He rewound the recording. “About ten minutes before the shipment left.” Isabella stared at the screen. Someone had been waiting. The question was why. “Did anyone approach the vehicle?” “No.” “Did it follow the truck?” “We don't know.” “Check the cameras outside.” The officer switched to another camera. The footage showed the truck leaving the warehouse. The SUV remained behind for several seconds. Then it moved. Isabella watched as it followed the truck onto the main road. Her stomach tightened. “Get me the route.” Daniel immediately called someone. A few minutes later, a printed map was placed on the desk. “The truck was supposed to take the eastern route,” Daniel said. Isabella traced the road with her finger. “Where did it disappear?” “We're not sure.” “You must have tracking.” “We did.” “Did?” Daniel looked uncomfortable. “The tracking signal stopped.” “Where?” He pointed to a location on the map. “Here.” Isabella stared at the spot. It was several kilometers away from the route the driver was supposed to take. She slowly looked up. “So the truck changed direction.” “Yes.” “Who authorized that?” “No one.” “Then why did it change direction?” Daniel had no answer. Isabella stepped away from the desk. “Take me there.” Daniel's eyes widened. “Miss Moretti, I don't think that's a good idea.” “Why?” “It's outside the normal delivery route.” “Exactly.” He hesitated. “Your father specifically said—” “My father isn't here.” Isabella turned toward him. “Take me there.” Twenty minutes later, Isabella's SUV left the warehouse. Two security vehicles followed behind. The location where the tracking signal had disappeared was an old industrial road with very little traffic. Abandoned buildings stood on both sides. Isabella looked out the window. “This doesn't look like a delivery route.” “It isn't,” Daniel said. The security driver slowed down. “There.” Everyone looked ahead. A large truck stood abandoned near the side of the road. Isabella immediately recognized it. “That's ours.” The vehicles stopped. Security officers stepped out first. They approached the truck carefully. Isabella remained inside until they signaled that it was safe. She stepped out. The driver's door was open. The engine was off. The truck was empty. Every container that had been loaded the previous afternoon was gone. Isabella stared at the empty cargo area. “Where's Victor?” One of the guards shook his head. “He isn't here.” “Search the area.” The men spread out. Isabella walked toward the driver's seat. The keys were still inside. That made no sense. If the driver had abandoned the truck, why leave the keys? She looked around. Something had happened here. Something deliberate. Daniel approached her. “Miss Moretti.” She turned. “We found something.” He held up a small black object. “What is that?” “A tracking device.” Isabella frowned. “Isn't that ours?” “No.” Daniel shook his head. “This one isn't from our company.” She took a closer look. The device had been attached beneath the truck. Someone had placed a second tracker on the vehicle. Someone had been monitoring it. “Take it back to the warehouse,” she said. “Yes.” A security officer approached. “Miss Moretti.” “What?” “We found tire marks.” “Where?” “Behind the truck.” They walked around to the back. Several sets of tire marks were visible on the dirt. One set belonged to the Moretti truck. Another belonged to a different vehicle. The second set led away from the road. Isabella followed the marks with her eyes. “The SUV.” Daniel nodded. “It could be.” She looked toward the road. Whoever had taken the shipment had planned everything. They knew the route. They knew what was inside the truck. They knew when it would leave. And they had followed it. Her phone suddenly rang. She pulled it from her pocket. Her father's name appeared. Isabella answered. “Dad.” “Where are you?” She hesitated. “At the warehouse.” “That isn't what I asked.” Isabella looked at the abandoned truck. “I found the shipment.” Silence. Her father's voice became serious. “What do you mean?” “The truck was abandoned several kilometers from the original route.” “Isabella, leave.” “Dad—” “Leave now.” She frowned. “Why?” “I said leave.” “Someone stole the shipment.” “I know.” “Then we need to find out who.” “We will.” “No. You will tell me what's really happening.” Another silence. Then her father said quietly, “You're not supposed to be involved in this.” “Too late.” He sighed. “Isabella, please.” She had never heard that tone from him before. Not anger. Not authority. Fear. She looked around. “Dad, what aren't you telling me?” Before he could answer, the call suddenly ended. Isabella stared at her phone. “Dad?” No response. She tried calling again. The call wouldn't connect. Her expression changed. “Something's wrong.” One of the security officers suddenly shouted. “Miss Moretti!” Isabella turned. The man was pointing toward the road. A black SUV was speeding away in the distance. Her heart raced. “That's it.” The security vehicles immediately started their engines. Isabella watched the SUV disappear around a corner. But before they could follow, her phone vibrated. A new message. You were warned to stay away. She stared at the screen. Another message appeared. Now you've seen too much. Isabella's fingers tightened around the phone. She looked at the empty road. For the first time, she understood something terrifying. The missing shipment wasn't simply a business problem. Someone had planned it. Someone had followed the truck. Someone had planted a tracker. And someone had known that Isabella would come looking. She slowly put the phone away. “Let's go back,” she said. Daniel looked surprised. “Aren't we following them?” “No.” “Why?” “Because that's what they want.” The security officers exchanged glances. Isabella looked once more at the abandoned truck. Whoever was behind this wanted the Moretti family to react. They wanted panic. They wanted mistakes. And Isabella wasn't going to give them one. But as the convoy turned back toward the warehouse, she couldn't shake the feeling that the real danger hadn't even begun. The first shipment was missing. The driver was gone. The enemy had remained hidden. And somewhere in the city, someone was watching the Moretti family make their next move.
