“Under a full moon, the soul recognizes what the mind denies.”
Lucas POV
“Alpha… we arrived too late to stop this mess,” my Beta, Jason, said beside me.
A low growl slipped out of my chest.
“Hmmm. Our timing keeps getting worse. Someone in this realm is summoning ghouls, and whoever it is—I’m going to rip their spine out.”
Humans disgust me.
Their realm is filthy, loud, fragile.
The only reason my pack ever crosses into the Mundane World is to clean up the disasters that leak out of our Lunaris Realm.
Two hundred years ago, humans exterminated almost every witch and creature they didn’t understand.
We were forced to build our own dimension… because this pathetic world couldn’t handle us.
Greedy. Fear-fed. Ego-driven.
I detest them.
And yet—
The Gods forbid us from destroying them.
If we did, they’d erase us next.
“Search for any residue or tracks before the Hunters pick up a scent,” I ordered Jason.
“Yes, Alpha.”
He rushed off.
I stared at the Howl Moon Bar below, stained with blood, violence, and stupidity.
Humans. Always the same.
As I descended the steps, a breeze shifted—
and then I stopped dead in my tracks.
Cinnamon.
Coconut.
Sweet apple.
A scent so warm it tightened my lungs.
A scent that didn’t belong to any creature I’d ever encountered.
“Mate.”
Ares, my wolf, roared inside me—feral, desperate.
My vision sharpened instantly.
I scanned the chaos until I saw her:
Long, dark curls bouncing down her back.
Perfect hips swaying as she pushed through the crowd.
A little thing—five feet of wildfire and soft flesh.
My body reacted violently.
Lust—raw, primal—hit me like a blade to the gut.
“She’s with a man,” Ares snarled.
“I don’t like my mate near another male.”
I stalked behind her.
She looked worried, searching for someone.
Then I saw the pale woman—mini skirt, heels, plastic scent—grab my mate’s hair.
My vision turned black.
No one touches my mate.
Before I could reach her, my little mate snapped—
turned and slammed her forehead into the woman’s nose.
Blood burst.
The woman screamed.
I smirked.
Of course my mate is fierce.
But then she froze—eyes wide with terror.
I followed her gaze.
A man was approaching her with murder on his face.
Not under my f*****g watch.
I moved in a flash—
fist connecting to his skull, sending him flying into a pile of chairs.
I barely used strength.
He still collapsed like the weak insect he was.
The moment I turned back to her—
everything stopped.
Chaos muted.
The world blurred.
Her eyes—warm honey, summer-brown—locked on me.
Her scent wrapped around me like silk.
Everything in me tightened painfully.
Mine.
I slid my arms around her waist, pulling her against me.
Her breath hitched.
She felt it.
She felt our bond.
I leaned down until my lips brushed her ear.
“Mate…”
I whispered, voice rough.
Her knees softened.
Her fingers slipped into my hair—gods, she touched me—and every part of me burned.
I dragged my nose down her neck, inhaling her.
Memorizing her.
Branding her scent into my soul.
She pulled my face toward hers—
lips parted, ready for me.
“Mate wants us,” Ares purred.
I almost took her mouth.
Right there.
Right in the middle of a battlefield.
Then—
something hit me.
Something wrong.
I stared into her eyes…
and felt confusion slice through me.
She felt human.
Her heartbeat.
Her warmth.
Her aura.
But her scent? Her energy? Her pull?
No human could be my mate.
Impossible.
“She’s human?” I murmured.
Ares growled violently.
“What are you doing, Lucas? Don’t you dare reject her!”
My instincts warred inside me—
wanting her
needing her
claiming her—
But fear shoved itself down my throat.
If she was human…
I could destroy her.
I could kill her with a single mistake.
So I pushed her away.
Her face—
the heartbreak in her eyes—
stabbed through my chest.
Ares screamed in rage.
“You hurt our mate!”
“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean—” I tried, but she stepped back, breathing fast.
She didn’t understand.
She couldn’t.
I fought Ares down—barely.
If I lost control, the whole bar would know what I was.
“What are you?” I demanded, desperate.
“Tell me you’re not human…”
But she looked hurt. Confused. Heartbroken.
And she walked away.
NO.
I grabbed her wrist.
“Tell me what you are,” I growled.
“You’re not human.”
Please… don’t be.
A sudden punch cracked across my jaw.
I turned—
The same man she’d been with earlier.
He grabbed her away from me.
Ares snapped.
I almost shifted in front of everyone.
But Jason’s voice slammed into my mind:
“Alpha! Hunters are nearby!”
I froze.
If Hunters saw me like this—
my pack would die.
I watched my mate run.
Run away with another male.
My chest tightened painfully.
She is mine.
And she doesn’t even know it.
I followed Jason to the escalade as the pack gathered.
“Jason, inside. Now.”
He climbed in quickly.
“I need information,” I said, voice cold.
“I believe my mate is not human. Find out why she lives here… hidden.”
Jason’s eyes widened.
“That’s impossible. We track all supernatural blood—”
“Then track her,” I cut in.
“She’s mine.”
He swallowed.
“I’ll investigate immediately, Alpha.”
“Good.”
I leaned back, closing my eyes, letting her scent linger in my mind.
Her eyes…
Her lips…
Her hips…
Ares growled in satisfaction.
Soon.
She will be ours.
