Alexander stared at his phone long after the call ended.
Goodbye, Alexander.
Two words.
Yet they felt heavier than any accusation Emma had thrown at him.
He slowly lowered the phone.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
His eyes drifted toward the bedroom.
Their bedroom.
He walked inside.
Everything was exactly as Emma had left it.
Her perfume still lingered in the air.
Her books were stacked neatly beside the bed.
A photograph of their wedding sat on the nightstand.
Alexander picked it up.
Emma was smiling in the picture.
Not the polite smile she had worn around his family.
A genuine smile.
The kind she used to give him.
He stared at it.
Then his gaze fell on the small table beside the bed.
Her wedding ring was still there.
He picked it up.
The gold band felt strangely heavy in his palm.
He remembered slipping it onto her finger five years ago.
"I'll never hurt you."
He had promised her that.
He almost laughed at the irony.
His phone rang.
It was his mother.
"Alexander, where are you?"
"At home."
"Is Emma there?"
His jaw tightened.
"No."
"She'll come back."
He didn't answer.
Victoria continued.
"You know how emotional women can be. Give her a few days."
Alexander stared at the ring.
"What if she doesn't?"
There was silence.
His mother sounded surprised.
"She will."
But Alexander wasn't so sure anymore.

EMMA
I spent the morning going through my father's documents.
The more I read, the angrier I became.
My father had spent years fighting to protect something that should have belonged to me.
There were letters between him and Richard Hale.
Most were polite.
Some were threatening.
But one letter stood out.
It was dated three months before my father's death.
Richard,
You know the agreement.
My daughter will inherit everything.
I will not allow you to take what belongs to her.
My hands trembled.
Why had my father been so afraid of the Hales?
I continued reading.
The next page was missing.
I searched through the box.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something written on the inside of the lid.
A series of numbers.
I copied them into my phone.
I didn't know what they meant.
But I knew someone had deliberately hidden them.
My phone rang.
It was my lawyer.
"Mrs. Hale?"
"Just Emma."
"Of course. I have reviewed the documents you sent."
"And?"
"There is a serious problem."
My stomach tightened.
"What kind of problem?"
"The shares are real."
I closed my eyes.
"I knew they were."
"No, Emma. You don't understand."
He paused.
"Your father didn't leave you thirty-five percent of the Hale empire."
My heart stopped.
"Then what did he leave me?"
"Thirty-five percent was only the beginning."
I couldn't speak.
"The agreement gives you voting rights over the entire Carter-Hale partnership."
"What does that mean?"
"It means whoever controls your shares can influence the entire company."
I stared at the documents.
Alexander had used my inheritance.
But perhaps he'd been hiding something even bigger.

ALEXANDER
By noon, Alexander had called Emma twenty-three times.
She hadn't answered once.
He sent messages.
Please talk to me.
I'm sorry.
Just give me one chance to explain.
Nothing.
He threw his phone onto the desk.
His assistant entered.
"Sir?"
"What?"
"There's someone here to see you."
"Who?"
"Mrs. Hale's lawyer."
Alexander's expression changed.
"Send him in."
The lawyer walked into the office carrying a folder.
"I'll make this brief."
Alexander leaned back.
"What does Emma want?"
The lawyer placed the folder on the desk.
"Your wife wants a divorce."
Alexander stared at the papers.
He knew that.
But seeing the word written across the documents made his chest tighten.
"I won't sign."
The lawyer looked at him calmly.
"That is your choice."
"She'll change her mind."
"She seems very certain."
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"She loves me."
The lawyer's expression didn't change.
"She did."
Alexander flinched.
The lawyer stood.
"That distinction may become important."
He walked out.
Alexander remained motionless.
Then his phone rang.
Lily.
He stared at her name.
He didn't answer.
It rang again.
He rejected the call.
A message appeared.
We need to talk.
Alexander deleted it.
For the first time, Lily meant nothing to him.
All he could think about was Emma.
Her empty side of the bed.
Her untouched clothes.
The ring in his hand.
He opened his fist.
The ring was still there.
And suddenly, Alexander realized something terrifying.
He had spent three months risking his marriage for Lily.
Now he would spend the rest of his life trying to get Emma back.

THE FIRST STEP
That evening, I stood outside a small office building.
It wasn't impressive.
It wasn't luxurious.
But it was mine.
I'd decided to start working again.
No Hale name.
No Alexander.
No family connections.
Just me.
I walked inside.
The receptionist smiled.
"Can I help you?"
"Yes."
I took a deep breath.
"I'm here for the position of operations manager."
Before she could answer, a familiar voice came from behind me.
"Emma?"
I turned.
A tall man stood several feet away.
Dark suit.
Cold expression.
Sharp eyes.
I recognized him immediately.
Damian Blackwood.
Alexander's biggest rival.
His gaze moved over me before settling on my face.
"I didn't know you worked here."
"I don't."
His eyebrow lifted.
"Then what are you doing here?"
"I'm starting over."
Something flickered in his eyes.
Respect.
Perhaps curiosity.
"Starting over?"
"Yes."
He looked toward the office.
"Then you're about to start in the wrong place."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because this company is about to be acquired."
"By whom?"
He looked directly at me.
"Me."
My heart skipped.
Of all the people I could have encountered today...
It had to be the one man my husband hated most.
Damian extended his hand.
"Welcome to Blackwood Corporation, Emma."
I stared at his hand.
I didn't know it yet, but accepting it would change my life.
And somewhere across the city, Alexander was staring at the wedding ring in his palm, finally realizing the woman he had taken for granted was no longer waiting for him.
She was moving on.
