As we argued, a rustling sound came from the forest. Walter immediately positioned himself to shield me, and I stood behind him, peering through a gap to see the intruders. They wore red cloaks, and their elongated fangs and gaunt, muscular frames were visible. Their faces were marked with blue veins and bloodshot eyes. One of them held a blue orb, floating in his palm like a magical sphere.
The enemy holding the orb said with a sneer, “Finally found you. So you’ve been hiding in this remote town all along.”
Walter’s face turned grim, a mix of fear and determination flashing across his features. I sensed his tension and felt a surge of heat emanating from his back. The atmosphere was so charged with tension that it was almost suffocating, leaving me rooted to the spot. For now, all I could do was stay behind him and watch what would happen next.
Walter’s voice was strained as he said, “Ezekiel, do you really have to wipe us out? We pose no threat to you; we’re just living here peacefully.”
Ezekiel sneered, "No threat? Your existence is a threat! You’re a rare Alpha, a once-in-500-years phenomenon. Your presence will inevitably cause chaos in the world. Your very existence will always be a threat to us. Tomorrow, our vampire army will not rest until we have exterminated you. We will prevent that prophecy from coming true!"
Walter’s eyes narrowed, his voice tinged with defiance, "Prophecy? Alpha? It’s irrelevant to us! Since you refuse to retreat and persist in your attack, I have no choice but to use all my strength to counter you."
Ezekiel’s laugh was cold and mocking, "Only you go against a hundred of us? Your all-out effort is laughable. Whether you use all your strength or not, I’m not afraid of you."
A pack member stepped forward, voice steady and commanding, "It’s not just one, it’s over a dozen."
Dozens of pack members emerged behind Walter, some armed, some unarmed. They were a mix of men and women, exuding a powerful and imposing presence.
Seeing the dozen or so pack members, Ezekiel’s grin turned malicious. The vampire army launched their attack. Though outnumbered, the pack members fought back unwavering bravery. The battle raged on, fiercely contested, with no clear winner in sight.
As I watched the battle unfold, I couldn’t help but think, How are a dozen people holding their ground against a hundred? What kind of pack are these?
Each pack member was formidable. While the vampire army struggled to harm the pack members, the pack members couldn’t effectively push back the vampires, resulting in a tense stalemate.
At that moment, Walter closed his eyes and slowly raised both hands, as if channeling a powerful force. With incredible speed, he began lifting and hurling the vampire soldiers outward. His immense strength and unnatural speed shattered the vampire army’s assault. Ezekiel, witnessing his troops being tossed aside, gapes in disbelief.
Ezekiel’s eyes widened in astonishment. “I didn’t expect the Alpha to be so powerful, seemingly capable of using multiple abilities at once.”
Ezekiel raised a hand, signaling his troops to halt. The pack members also stopped fighting, their expressions a mix of surprise and relief.
Ezekiel, with a calm and commanding tone, said, “Retreat!”
One of the soldiers stepped forward, frustration etched on his face. “But our orders are to pursue and kill all werewolves. We shouldn’t let a single one escape!”
Ezekiel’s gaze turned icy as he replied, “Retreat is an order from the army. Do you wish to disobey?”
The soldiers retreated and resumed their positions, signaling the withdrawal. The vampire army, having been pushed back, left the area. The entire battle lasted only about five minutes. Although I wasn’t particularly brave nor someone who avoided danger, the fear I felt during these moments was distinct from the fear I had when it started to rain. This time, it wasn’t just about finding shelter from the rain; it was witnessing enemies with extraordinary powers clashing in a way far beyond anything a mere human could interfere with.
As the vampire army departed, the pack members began to turn their attention to me, murmuring among themselves.
Anna stepped forward from the crowd, her expression stern and concerned. “Walter, there’s no choice now. This girl has been seen by Ezekiel. They’ll recognize her and try to wipe her out, believing she’s part of the werewolves.”
Anna approached me with a mix of curiosity and caution. “What’s your name?”
I replied, my voice trembling slightly, “I’m Ayla. Are you all werewolves? Was the enemy we just fought the vampire army? Are they the threat you were talking about in the cabin?”
Walter, looking both resolute and weary, said, “Yes... you don’t need to know so much. Mother, let’s go back to the cabin and discuss this.”
With that, Walter wrapped his arm around my waist and jumped from the lakeside grass into the cabin. The rest of the pack followed, retreating to the cabin as well.
