Chapter 5: The Power

1069 Words
The battlefield was quiet again. Too quiet. Burn marks covered the ground. Broken concrete. Smoke rising slowly into the night sky. The creatures were gone. Destroyed. But something didn’t feel like a victory. Alex stood still, breathing heavily. His hands were shaking. “…Did we get all of them?” he asked. “Yeah,” Leo replied, cracking his neck. “That was the last wave.” Eron stretched. “Too easy.” “No,” Nyx said softly. Everyone looked at her. “…It wasn’t.” Alex followed her gaze. The shadows around them— Were moving. Not his. Not hers. Something else. Something Is Wrong “Back up,” Kai said immediately. The team shifted formation. Mira’s flames ignited again. “What now?” she asked. Nyx’s voice dropped. “…It’s reacting.” “To what?” Alex asked. She looked at him. “To you.” Silence. “…That’s not funny,” Alex said. “I’m not joking.” The ground beneath Alex darkened. The shadows gathered unnaturally around his feet. Thicker. Heavier. Alive. “Alex,” Kai said slowly, “what are you doing?” “I’m not doing anything!” But it was happening. The shadows started climbing his legs. Cold. Heavy. Like something was pulling him down— Or trying to take control. “Get them off!” Alex shouted. Nyx stepped forward— Then stopped. Her eyes widened slightly. “…No.” “What do you mean no?!” Mira snapped. Nyx shook her head. “If I interfere… it might get worse.” “Worse than this?!” Eron said. Alex dropped to one knee. The darkness spread across his body. Up his chest. Around his arms. “…I can’t—control it—!” His voice distorted slightly. Like something else was speaking with him. “Alex, listen to me!” Kai shouted. “Focus! You control it—not the other way around!” “I’m trying!” The shadows surged violently. And then— Everything snapped. The First Transformation Darkness exploded outward. A shockwave knocked everyone back. “MOVE!” Leo shouted, grabbing Mira and pulling her away. When the smoke cleared— Alex was no longer standing there. Something else was. Taller. Twisted. His body covered in living shadow. His eyes— Completely black. No white. No human left in them. “…Alex?” Kai said carefully. The thing tilted its head. Slow. Unnatural. Then— It moved. Too fast. It slammed into Kai, sending him crashing across the ruins. “KAi!” Eron shouted, rushing forward— But the creature turned— And caught him mid-motion. Impossible. Even for Eron. “…What the hell is that?!” Mira yelled. “It’s him,” Nyx said quietly. “…But not.” No Control Alex was still inside. Somewhere. Screaming. But he couldn’t move. Couldn’t stop it. Couldn’t control it. “I don’t want this—!” his voice echoed faintly inside the darkness. But the power didn’t listen. It never had. Nyx Steps In Nyx walked forward slowly. “Don’t,” Kai said weakly, trying to get up. “It’ll kill you.” Nyx didn’t stop. “…No,” she said. “It won’t.” She stepped directly in front of the shadow creature. “Alex.” No response. “Listen to me.” The creature raised its arm. Sharp tendrils formed. Ready to strike. Nyx didn’t move. “You’re not alone.” The attack stopped. For just a second. “Remember that,” she said softly. “Whatever this is… it’s not all you are.” Silence. Then— A flicker. Inside the darkness— A spark of resistance. Breaking Through “…Nyx…” The voice was weak. Distorted. But it was there. “Good,” she said quietly. “Stay with me.” The shadows trembled. Fighting themselves. “You’re stronger than this.” The creature staggered slightly. Then— It screamed. A sound that didn’t belong to anything human. The darkness shattered outward— And collapsed. Alex fell to the ground. Unconscious. Aftermath No one spoke for a few seconds. Eron finally exhaled. “…Yeah. That’s new.” Mira stared at Alex. “That wasn’t just loss of control.” “No,” Nyx said. “It was something else.” Kai walked over slowly, bruised but standing. “…He almost killed us.” Silence. “…We can’t ignore that,” Mira added. Nyx knelt beside Alex. “No,” she said. “We can’t.” The Truth Begins Back at the Academy— Alex woke up in a medical room. White ceiling. Quiet. Safe. For now. “…I lost control,” he said. “You did,” Kai replied from the chair nearby. Alex turned his head. “…Did I hurt anyone?” Kai hesitated. “…No.” A pause. “But you came close.” Alex closed his eyes. “…I felt it.” “What?” “Something inside me.” A long silence. “…It wasn’t me.” Kai leaned back slightly. “Then what was it?” Alex opened his eyes again. This time— Serious. “…I think it’s something that’s been there… the whole time.” The Girl Who Sees the End Later that night— The white-haired girl appeared again. Like she always did. Without warning. “You saw it,” she said. Alex didn’t react. “…Yeah.” “It gets worse.” “Good to know.” She stepped closer. “This isn’t just a power.” Alex looked at her. “Then what is it?” A pause. Then— “It’s a fragment.” “…Of what?” She held his gaze. “Something that shouldn’t exist anymore.” Alex felt a chill run through him. “…You’re not helping.” She ignored that. “Your brother knows.” Alex froze. “…What?” She nodded slightly. “He’s alive.” Silence. “…Where?” Her expression darkened slightly. “In a future that’s already breaking.” Meanwhile… Somewhere Else Darkness. A ruined world. Cracked sky. Broken ground. A portal flickered open. Darius stepped out. Different. Stronger. Colder. Behind him— Four figures. Equally powerful. Equally dangerous. “Did it work?” one of them asked. Darius looked forward. “…Yes.” A pause. “He’s alive.” “And the timeline?” Darius’s eyes darkened. “…Already changing.”
