Previously, I named the killer in Dark Matters “Groot.”
I wrote the first draft of the novel back in 2004. At the time, I was unfamiliar with the character popularized by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy a decade later, even though Groot originally appeared in comics in 1960. I remember trying out different names before coming up with “Groot” as the character’s name because I liked the sound.
