hin swam up onto East Beach and started running through the jungle toward his compound. Even over the shouting and wild firing he could hear a boat engine in the distance. It was moving in the direction of the island—and probably carrying a load of soldiers or police. It was down to a fight on Koh Tang, no doubt in his mind about that at this point. He had to get the drunks armed and organized for that. He needed to fend off attackers at least until he could locate a reliable crewman or two to help him launch the whaleboat from old Yieh. Failing that…well, Khin adhered to the ancient pirate code: It’s better to die fighting as a free man than be executed or die a slow, disgraceful death in some stinking prison.
