When Maia opened her eyes, she wasn’t outside anymore. She was laying on the soft beige carpet. Directly in front of her was a bed. She sat up and looked around. Her grandmother lay on the bed with her eyes closed, her head propped up on two pillows. Her hands rested on her stomach. They moved up and down as she breathed heavily, sleeping. Maia was so happy to see her grandmother again. She didn’t recognize this room, but at least her grandmother was there with her. Her mother had told her never to wake her grandmother when she was sleeping. She stood and tiptoed over to the bedside, her bare feet sinking into the soft carpet. When she reached the bedside, she put her hands on the mattress and leaned over, listening to her grandmother sleep. Secretly, part of her hoped that being so close
