Chloe slid her pile of books across the carpet to the bookshelf and began to put them away. She had the demeanor of someone much older, and her words took on an uncharacteristic poise.
“I went into the closet because my parents were fighting, and I wanted to hide.” She pressed her lips together and looked at the floor as if considering if she should tell Adam something. “And he told me to.”
Adam stopped hanging up clothes and stood with an empty plastic coat hanger in his hand. “Do you go into the closet so you don’t hear your parents a lot?” He took note that Tim and Jules were arguing and wondered if they fought often. He also wondered why Jules hadn’t mentioned it when he came over.
Chloe shrugged. “It’s the only place where I can block out the sound. Sometimes he visits me there.”
